Chapter 1 of My Alpha Husband Faked Sterility and Blamed Me

The scent hit me at 11:47 on a Tuesday night, three steps into the guest wing—honeysuckle, cheap and sweet, smeared wrong over the cedar-and-woodsmoke smell I'd tracked through this house for twenty years. Lucas's scent, but not Lucas's alone. I stood outside the door with my hand already on the knob before I let myself think about what that meant.

I opened it.

He was mid-shift, half wolf, half man, Valerie Bishop under him with her hands fisted in the sheets. My mark—the scar on my neck he'd put there at twenty-two—flared hot with every movement of his hips, then guttered, then flared again, like a lightbulb about to die. I gave myself exactly three seconds. I counted them. I memorized the placement of her clothes on the floor, the angle of his shoulder, the way his eyes were closed like he didn't need to see who he was inside.

Valerie saw me first. She smiled—slow, satisfied—and rolled her bare neck toward the door, tilting it like an offering. "He's promising me the next full moon," she said, breathless, not even lowering her voice. "Right here, actually."

I didn't scream. I didn't say his name. I closed the door the way you close a door on a room you're done with, quiet enough that the latch barely clicked, and I walked back to my office with my spine straight and my hands steady, because falling apart was a decision, and I hadn't made it yet.

By 4 AM I'd called Declan Hurst, our record-keeper, a man who'd trusted my signature on pack documents for eleven years without once asking why I wanted what I wanted. "Lucas's private healer files," I told him. "Five years. Under my authority as Luna."

A pause on the line, not suspicion—just the sound of a man recalibrating. "I'll have them within the hour, Luna."

He did. A plain leather folder, no note, left outside my door before the house woke. I read every page at my desk with the lamp burning low: wolfsbane-laced suppressants, prescribed monthly, dated back sixty months exactly. Deliberate. Documented. Sterility he'd chosen and hidden from me while he let his parents ask, year after year, why I hadn't given him a son. By sunrise I had five years of proof in my hands and a mark on my neck that hadn't stopped aching since midnight.

Three days later, he stood on the banquet dais with Valerie's hand looped through his arm in front of three hundred wolves, and I stood below him in the dress I'd chosen for this exact possibility, black, unremarkable, easy to walk out of a room in.

"I, Lucas, Alpha of Ironvale Pack," he said, and his voice carried with the Alpha tone underneath it, pressing down on the crowd like a hand on the back of the neck, "reject you, Jolene Montgomery, as my mate and Luna."

The mark went white-hot first—a brand, a scream under my skin—and then it went cold. Not cool. Cold, and then nothing, like a door closing on an empty room. My wolf, the one I'd been told for twenty years was too small, too weak to be worth naming, folded in on herself and went silent inside me. My knees hit the dais floor before I decided to kneel.

I looked for Winter in the crowd. She was there, close enough to see, and she didn't move. She didn't step forward. She watched her mother go down and she stayed exactly where she stood.

And then something under my ribs that had never had a name tore itself loose.

Silver light broke out of my skin like the dais itself had cracked open. I felt my body change into something the guest-wing mirror had never shown me—fur blazing white-silver, twice the height of any she-wolf in that hall, a scent pouring off me that I would later learn to call white nightshade and frozen starlight. Three hundred wolves dropped to their knees at once, a wave of bodies folding down like grass under wind. Lucas staggered backward off his own dais, both hands flying to his chest as if something inside him had physically cracked.

I shifted back on my own feet, in my own dress, and I did not look at Winter again. I did not look at Valerie's face, though I could smell her fear from across the hall, sharper now than any honeysuckle.

I walked toward the doors. Behind me I heard Lucas find his voice, raw and furious, aimed at my back.

"Jolene—"

The doors closed on the rest of it.
