Chapter 1 of My Alpha Gave His Mistress My Ceremonial Leathers

I wasn't supposed to be home yet.

The regional Healer summit in Sacramento had two full days left on the schedule — panel discussions on rogue-wound treatment protocols, a workshop on suppressing forced-shift trauma in adolescent wolves — but Seraphine had been restless since the second morning. Not anxious. Not afraid. Just… wrong. Like something fundamental had shifted out of alignment back home, and my wolf could feel the tilt even from two hundred miles away.

So I'd made my excuses to the summit coordinator, packed my travel kit, and driven straight through. The sun was barely touching the ridgeline when I pulled into Ironpeak territory. The pack house sat quiet in the early light, most wolves still asleep or out on dawn patrol. I parked in my usual spot near the east entrance and carried my bag inside.

No one saw me come in. That was fine. I wasn't looking for a welcome committee.

I climbed the stairs to the third floor, where my private armory sat tucked behind the Healer's office. It was a small room, just large enough for the custom weapon rack Preston had commissioned for me years ago and the locked cabinet where I kept my ceremonial leathers. I'd always loved that space. It was mine in a way very few places in the pack house were — organized exactly how I needed it, every blade and throwing star catalogued by weight and balance.

I unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The first thing I noticed was the scent.

Not mine. Not Preston's familiar winter sage, either, though that had been fading for months now, so pale I sometimes wondered if I was imagining it entirely. This was something else. Floral. Cheap. The kind of synthetic vanilla-and-rose blend you could buy at any human drugstore. It clung to the leather grips on my throwing knives, faint but unmistakable.

I set my bag down slowly.

The second thing I noticed was the rack itself.

Every weapon had been moved.

Not dramatically. Not in a way anyone else would see. But I was a Healer. I noticed everything. The twin short swords I kept on the top rung had been lowered six inches. The daggers were pushed inward, closer together. The entire configuration had been adjusted — recalibrated for a wolf with a narrower reach, a shorter stance, smaller hands.

Seraphine's growl rolled through my mind, low and cold. *Someone has been here. Someone who is not us.*

I stood very still.

My first instinct was to rationalize it. Maybe one of the younger she-wolves had borrowed something for training. Maybe Preston had moved things while looking for — what? What would he need from my armory that he couldn't get from his own?

But the scent. That cheap, cloying vanilla.

I knew that scent.

I pulled out my phone and sent a single message to Mikael Carter: *I'm home early. I need you. Healer's office. Now. Tell no one.*

Then I locked the armory door behind me, walked into my office, and sat down at my desk to wait.

Mikael arrived within twenty minutes. He was a Beta-ranked wolf, technically Preston's second-in-command, but he'd been my friend since we were kids running through the forest behind the pack school. He had the kind of face that didn't give much away — sharp-featured, dark-eyed, perpetually calm — but I saw the concern flicker when he looked at me.

"What happened?" he asked quietly.

I told him about the armory. The repositioned weapons. The scent.

He didn't ask if I was sure. He just nodded once and said, "I'll check the security footage."

"Preston deletes it every seventy-two hours," I said. "Pack protocol."

"I know." Mikael's mouth twitched in something that wasn't quite a smile. "That's why I keep a backup archive. He doesn't know about it."

I stared at him. "How long have you been doing that?"

"Long enough."

He pulled a slim tablet from his jacket, tapped the screen a few times, and handed it to me. "This is from three nights ago. Alpha quarters. I recovered it this morning after you texted."

I took the tablet.

The footage was grainy but clear enough. My bedroom. My bed. Preston's bare back as he leaned over someone — a smaller she-wolf with dark hair and a narrow frame. She was laughing, her head tipped back, and wrapped around her shoulders were my ceremonial furs. The ones blessed by the Moon Goddess herself when I became Head Healer. The ones I'd earned.

Sky Guzman.

I watched Preston fasten the clasps at her throat. Watched him kiss her neck where my mark should have been. Watched her run her hands through his hair like she owned him.

I didn't blink. Didn't look away. I watched every second until the footage ended.

Then I set the tablet down on my desk, very carefully, and said, "Don't delete anything. Archive all of it."

Mikael's voice was quiet. "Autumn—"

"All of it," I repeated. "Everything you have. I want timestamps. I want dates. I want a full record."

He hesitated, then nodded. "What are you going to do?"

I looked at him. "I'm going to think."

After he left, I locked my office door. I sat down at my desk, pulled out one of the charmed memory-stones I used for recording complex healing procedures, and set it in front of me. Seraphine was silent now, watchful, waiting.

I allowed myself exactly one hour.

One hour to feel the decade I'd given him dissolve like smoke. One hour to sit with the truth that the mate bond I'd believed was unshakable — the black orchid and winter sage that every wolf in Ironpeak had howled for — had been rotting from the inside for years while I made excuses for the smell.

I didn't howl. I didn't cry.

I just… sat.

And when the hour was over, I activated the memory-stone and began to speak.

"Evidence log. Day one. Subject: Preston Lane, Alpha of Ironpeak Pack. Suspected infidelity, asset misappropriation, potential grounds for formal mate-bond rejection under Section Twelve of the Luna Contract…"

My voice was steady. Clinical. Exactly the way I'd been trained.

By the time I finished, I had a framework. I knew what I needed. I knew what I could prove.

I stood, smoothed my Healer's uniform, and walked back out into the pack house.

No one saw the difference.

Preston didn't even know I was home yet.
