My Alpha Forced Me to Kneel for His Mistress

I could not speak. I could not move. But I could look.

I dragged my eyes up from the floor. Slow. Slower than any muscle in my body wanted to be. The Alpha tone pressed down on my spine like a hand on the back of my neck, but my eyes were mine. They had always been mine. I lifted them and I found his.

Maddox.

The man whose mark had died on my throat. The man who had marked me while another woman's scent waited at the edge of his dreams. I held his gaze. I did not blink. I did not flinch. I let him see, all the way through to the back of my skull, that he could pin my body to this floor a hundred times and he was never going to get the word he wanted.

His jaw tightened. Something flickered behind his eyes—surprise, maybe, or the first dim recognition that the woman kneeling at his feet was not the woman he thought he had broken.

He released the tone with a snarl.

Air rushed back into my lungs. My arms shook. I did not let myself fall.

"Omega quarters," he said, his voice rough. "Confined. Pending further investigation." He turned to Jase. "Make sure she doesn't go near the archives again."

Jase's voice was flat. Quiet. "The secondary archive already shows she couldn't have—"

"Not now."

Jase went silent. His hands hung very still at his sides. I had worked beside Jase for two years. I knew what it cost him to stand there with his mouth closed.

I did not look at him. I did not look at Leanna. I pushed myself up off the floor one slow inch at a time, made my legs hold me, and walked out under my own weight.

Genesis was waiting in the corridor. Her face was white. She fell into step beside me without speaking, close enough that her shoulder brushed mine, and she did not let go of that closeness until the Omega quarters door clicked shut behind us.

The room had a cot, a chair, and a window the size of a serving tray.

I sat on the edge of the cot and pulled the small sealed drive from the inside pocket of my jacket. I plugged it into the secondhand laptop Genesis had smuggled to me weeks ago. I copied every photograph. Every timestamp. Every version log. I encrypted the file three different ways, then I copied it onto a second drive I kept on a chain under my shirt.

My hands were steady. They had been steady all day. I think I was past the place where shaking was an option.

Genesis came in just after dark with a folded change of clothes and a paper bag of food I did not want and made myself eat anyway. She sat on the chair across from me and watched me chew.

"Two of your contacts called the front gate today," she said quietly. "Asking why their Ironveil liaison had been reassigned. They were told you're under investigation for deliberate sabotage."

I stopped chewing.

"Reach," she added. "It's spreading past us."

"How far?"

"Far enough that by next week the Council briefings will have it."

I set the food down. I stared at the wall.

The story was already being written about me, in rooms I would never see, by mouths I would never face. By the time I cleared my name in any formal sense, the version that had traveled would already be the version that mattered.

Unless I made the truth louder than the lie.

I looked at Genesis. "How long can you stay?"

"As long as you need."

"I need you to make a list. Every contact I had outside this pack. Every name. Every number. Every person who would still take a call from you because they wouldn't take one from me right now."

She nodded.

Inside my chest, where my wolf had been a silence for days, something was no longer silent. It was not noise yet. It was the held breath before noise. It was a presence, sitting up.

I didn't tell Genesis. I didn't tell anyone.

I just sat there on the cot, in a room the size of a closet, and felt it watching with me.

While I sat there with my list and my drive and my held breath, Leanna was walking into the pack vault.

I did not see it. I would learn it later, when Jase's face told me without his mouth having to.

She used Maddox's override code. He had given it to her three days after she was installed in the Luna quarters, the way an Alpha hands his Luna-in-waiting the keys to everything that matters. She unlocked the inner cabinet. She pulled the scent-sealed original Thornridge documents—the ones with my handwriting, my signatures, my scent baked into the wax. The only physical proof that the corrupted versions were not the originals.

She took them to the incinerator behind the kitchens. She fed them in one at a time. She watched the wax bubble and the paper curl.

Twenty minutes later she slid back into Maddox's bed in a thin robe and pressed a glass of water to his sleeping mouth. "I got thirsty," she whispered when he stirred. She set the glass down. She rested her head on his shoulder, where my head used to rest, and she sighed into his throat.

"I just worry," she murmured, "about what Vienna's presence is still doing to this pack. To you."

He did not answer. He pulled her closer in his sleep.

And somewhere in a small room on the far side of the pack house, I closed my laptop, lay down on a cot that was not mine, and listened to the thing inside my chest learn how to breathe.
