The dress was ivory. Not white — ivory. Apparently there's a difference when you're being mated off to the Alpha of the most powerful pack on the East Coast.

I didn't pick it. I didn't pick the flowers, the venue, or the three hundred wolves filling the Ironveil Pack's ceremonial hall like it was some kind of political concert. My mother picked the dress. My father picked the date. And somewhere in between, they picked my entire future without asking me once.

But I didn't know that yet. Not at the altar.

At the altar, I was just a girl in an ivory dress, standing under a canopy of white roses, waiting for a man I'd met exactly twice.

Zander Morrison. Alpha of the Ironveil Pack. Tall, dark-haired, jaw like it was carved out of granite. The kind of face that made she-wolves lose their composure at pack events. He walked in fifteen minutes late, flanked by his Beta, Marcus Webb, and didn't look at me.

Not once.

He took his place across from me at the altar and stared somewhere past my left shoulder. His jaw was tight. His eyes were flat. He looked like a man signing paperwork at a government office.

I told myself it was nerves. Some Alphas are like that — all authority, no warmth. I told myself a lot of things in those first few minutes. I was good at that.

The officiant began the bonding rites. Old words. Moon Goddess words. The kind of words that are supposed to make your wolf stir and your chest feel warm. My wolf had only just awakened three months ago — late, embarrassingly late for a she-wolf my age — and she was still more instinct than voice. But I could feel her listening. Paying attention.

Then it happened.

A gasp from the crowd. A soft, theatrical sound — the kind that cuts through silence like a knife because it's designed to. I turned my head and saw her.

Ariel Sanchez.

She was standing at the edge of the front row in a red dress that had no business being at someone else's Mate Ceremony. Her hand was pressed to her chest. Her knees buckled. She swayed like a flower in wind, and then she collapsed — slowly, gracefully, like she'd practiced it in a mirror.

Every head in the hall turned.

And Zander moved.

He didn't excuse himself. He didn't glance at me. He stepped off the altar platform and crossed the hall in four long strides, and he was on his knees beside her before anyone else could reach her. His hands were on her face. His voice was low and urgent. "Ariel. Ariel, look at me."

Three hundred wolves watched.

I watched.

The officiant stopped mid-sentence, his mouth still open. Marcus Webb closed his eyes briefly, like a man who had seen this coming and hoped he was wrong.

The silence in that hall was the loudest thing I'd ever heard.

Something inside me went very still. Not numb — still. Like the moment before a glass hits the floor, when it's already falling and you know it's going to shatter but it hasn't yet.

My wolf stirred. Not with words. She didn't have words yet. Just a single, blunt impression that pressed against the inside of my skull like a hand on my spine.

So I stood. And I didn't flinch.

I kept my hands at my sides. I kept my chin level. I watched my fated mate cradle another woman on the floor of our Mate Ceremony, and I did not move a single muscle in my face.

The whispers started. Low at first, then louder. I could feel the eyes shifting between Zander and me, measuring, calculating. Every ranked wolf from every allied pack on the East Coast was in that room. This wasn't just a humiliation. It was a broadcast.

Ariel opened her eyes. She looked up at Zander with a soft, grateful expression that was so perfectly timed it made my stomach turn. Then she looked at me.

Just for a second. Just long enough.

And she smiled.

My mother. My father. The Alpha and Luna of the Dawnmere Pack — though calling our pack a "pack" was generous. We were forty wolves and a pile of debt held together by stubbornness.

My mother's face was tight. My father wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Lexi," my mother said. "Sit down."

"I'll stand."

She exchanged a look with my father. The kind of look parents share when they've already decided something and are just figuring out how to deliver it.

"There's something we need to tell you about the arrangement with the Ironveil Pack," my father said. His voice was careful. Measured. The voice he used when he was managing a situation.

"The arrangement," I repeated.

"The mate bond. It's... secured by a blood oath."

I stared at him. "What blood oath?"

He pulled a folded document from his jacket. Heavy paper. Old ink. The kind of document that carries legal and spiritual weight in the pack world. He held it out to me like it was a gift.

I took it. I read it.

The words were formal, dense, full of pack-law language. But the meaning was simple. My parents had signed a blood oath on my behalf — without my knowledge, without my consent — binding me to the mate bond with Zander Morrison as settlement for the Dawnmere Pack's debts to the Ironveil Pack. And buried in the clauses, in language so careful it had to have been drafted by a lawyer, was the hook:

If I rejected the bond, I would forfeit my wolf. Permanently.

I read it twice. Then I folded it. Slowly, precisely, along the original creases. And I slid it into the inner pocket of my jacket.

My mother was watching me with something that might have been guilt. Or might have been fear that I'd make a scene.

"Lexi, this was the only way to save the pack —"

"Don't," I said quietly.

She stopped.

I looked at my father. He still wouldn't meet my eyes.

I wasn't sent here to find a mate. I was sold to settle a debt. And the receipt was in my pocket.

The Alpha suite smelled like whiskey and Ariel's perfume.

Zander arrived after midnight, barely upright. His Beta had walked him to the door and left without a word. Marcus gave me one look on his way out — brief, unreadable — and then I was alone with my fated mate on what was supposed to be our marking night.

He collapsed onto the bed fully clothed. He didn't look at me. He hadn't looked at me all day.

I sat in the chair by the window and waited. Not for him. I wasn't sure what I was waiting for. Maybe for the night to be over. Maybe for something to make sense.

The knock came at 11:47.

I opened the door, and there she was. Ariel Sanchez. Changed out of the red dress into something sleek and black. Her hair was perfect. Her makeup was perfect. She looked like she'd been expecting this moment all evening.

"Hi," she said. Like we were meeting for coffee.

She looked past me at Zander, passed out on the bed, and something possessive flickered across her face. Then she reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope. Thick. Cash.

"Five thousand," she said. "For the room. And for your... discretion."

She held it out to me with a smile that was almost kind. The way you'd smile at a stray you were shooing off your porch.

I looked at the envelope. I looked at Zander — unconscious, reeking, mouth open. My fated mate. The Moon Goddess's gift to me.

The calculation took less than three seconds.

I took the cash. I pulled the suite key from my pocket and placed it in Ariel's open palm.

"He snores," I said. "Good luck."

Her smile faltered. Just for a second. She hadn't expected it to be that easy.

I walked out of the Ironveil Pack's territory before dawn. No suitcase. No goodbye. Just my wolf, my pride, the blood oath folded against my ribs, and five thousand dollars of Ariel Sanchez's money in my back pocket.

The Silverfang Pack compound sat on a hillside in the eastern part of the city — a sprawling complex of training facilities, residential blocks, and a main hall that looked more like a tech campus than a wolf den. I'd heard about it for years. Alpha Griffin Tucker ran the most merit-based pack on the West Coast. You didn't inherit rank here. You earned it.

I showed up at the front gate at dawn, still in the clothes I'd left Ironveil in. The guard looked me over and asked my business.

"I need to see Alpha Tucker."

"Name?"

"Lexi Davis."

He made a call. Five minutes later, Griffin walked out.

He looked the same. Taller, maybe. Broader. But the same steady eyes, the same unhurried way of moving, like the world could wait and it would. We'd grown up in neighboring packs. He used to walk me home from the creek that ran between our territories when we were kids. That was a long time ago.

He stopped three feet from me and looked at my face. Really looked. Not past me, not through me. At me.

"Lexi."

"Griffin."

A pause. He didn't ask what happened. He didn't ask if I was okay. He'd been tracking the Ironveil Mate Ceremony fallout through pack networks all night. I could see it in his eyes — he already knew.

"I need a starting rank," I said. "Zero. And a training schedule."

He studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded once.

"Bunk twelve in the unranked barracks. Combat rotation starts at oh-six-hundred tomorrow. No special treatment."

"I didn't ask for any."

Something shifted in his expression. Not quite a smile. Something quieter than that.

"No," he said. "You never do."

He turned and walked back toward the main hall. I followed, five thousand dollars lighter in my chest and heavier in my spine, carrying a folded document that I would not unfold again until the day I read it to the world.
