My Alpha Captain Chose Her While I Bled

"The HCG level is conclusive," Naomi said. "You're six weeks pregnant."

I stared at the lab result between us.

Six weeks.

I did not need a calendar. I remembered the night exactly. Carter's shoulder had locked after an overtime game. I stayed late to treat him, the arena emptied, and he engaged the recovery-room deadbolt himself.

After the playoffs, everyone will know you're my wife, he had whispered against my mate mark.

By morning, I left through the loading dock alone while he entered a Vaughn family charity event with Sienna on his arm.

Naomi pulled up a second screen. "The pregnancy is early, so I can't promise viability from imaging yet. But your hormone progression is normal. The Moon Blood extraction should never have happened."

"Could it hurt the baby?"

"Any substantial draw can destabilize an early pregnancy, especially with your anemia. Most patients recover. Some don't."

I forced myself to breathe.

"Who removed the lock?"

"I traced the audit history as far as I could without triggering a league alert." Naomi turned the tablet toward me. "The warning generated at ten oh three. It was manually cleared forty-two seconds later with an internal override."

"Whose override?"

"Masked. Someone with clinical or executive access."

I folded the report and found Carter outside the locker room.

He had just finished morning skate. Sweat darkened the collar of his practice jersey.

I pushed the paper against his chest.

He read it once. Then again.

"Six weeks?"

"Yes."

His eyes lifted to my face. "Why are you telling me this now?"

The question was so wrong I almost laughed.

"Because I found out this morning."

"Right after Sienna's accident."

"What does that mean?"

He looked back at the report. "That night six weeks ago. You knew your heat cycle was close."

I took the paper from him before he could crease it.

"You locked the door, Carter. You kissed me first. You told me we would stop hiding."

"I am not denying that."

"No. You're suggesting I got pregnant on purpose."

His silence answered for him.

I stepped back.

"If the pregnancy is viable, I will take responsibility," he said. "But don't use it to force a Luna announcement while you're under investigation."

I felt something inside me go very quiet.

"You think I sabotaged Sienna, manipulated you into getting me pregnant, and timed the news to save my title."

"I think the timing is complicated."

"The timing is six weeks pregnant and twenty-four hours after you ordered my blood into another woman."

He rubbed the back of his neck. "I have a team meeting. We'll talk after the road game."

The league allowed me to travel with Northstar only as medical-record support. I could access charts but not touch a player.

The night before the game, Carter came to my hotel room.

The moment I opened the door, his Alpha senses caught the change in my scent. His expression shifted.

"Any more dizziness?"

"No."

"Bleeding?"

"Not yet."

He exhaled and stepped closer. His hand cupped my neck. For one desperate second, I wanted the man from two years ago to return.

He kissed me.

The bond surged.

Then I smelled vanilla and orchids on his jacket.

Sienna's perfume.

I shoved him away.

"You came from her room."

Carter dragged a hand through his hair. "She had a panic episode. She dreamed about falling again."

"So you held her until she calmed down and came here to kiss me with her perfume on you."

"She's injured and scared."

"And I'm pregnant with your child."

"You are my mate," he snapped. "I came here, didn't I? Stop turning every moment between us into a loyalty test."

"Being your mate is not a backstage pass you use when it's convenient. Get out."

His eyes flashed, but he obeyed.

Nine minutes later, Sienna posted a photo from the captain's suite. She was curled on the leather sofa wearing Carter's away-game jacket.

A text from him arrived almost immediately.

She needs comfort. Don't make a scene.

I read the sentence twice.

Then I opened my private cloud folder.

I uploaded the pregnancy report, Naomi's blood-draw audit, my maintenance keycard log, and the recovery-room biometric timestamp proving Carter had been with me when Sienna fell.

After that, I opened the league medical-ethics portal and requested an independent review.

The portal generated a case number and warned me that opening a formal inquiry could expose conflicts involving team ownership, pack authority, and the hidden marriage. I checked the box confirming I understood. For two years, fear of exposure had belonged mostly to Carter. Tonight, I stopped carrying it for him.

I downloaded the confirmation PDF, forwarded a copy to Naomi, and scheduled the first available confidential interview for the morning after the road game.

I did not threaten Carter. I did not warn Sienna. I simply created a record neither of them could erase.

A cramp twisted low in my abdomen.

I froze.

The pain eased after several seconds.

I told myself it was stress.

A second cramp came harder.

I made it to the bathroom before my knees weakened. I lowered my clothes and stared at the tissue in my hand.

Bright red blood stained the white paper.

My phone sat on the sink beside me. The game countdown glowed across the lock screen.

Forty minutes until puck drop.

Carter had spent two years asking me to wait until the season ended, until the succession audit cleared, until Sienna recovered, until the media lost interest.

I pressed one hand against my abdomen and used the other to call him.

He did not answer.

I called again.

Voicemail.

On the third attempt, the team assistant picked up.

"Captain Vaughn is dressing," he said. "Can I take a message?"

I looked at the blood spreading across the tissue.

"Tell him his wife is bleeding right now," I said. "And tell him he has forty minutes to decide whether he comes with me to the hospital or takes the ice."
