Married To The Stranger In The Dark

Kate POV:

The car dipped as Josh pulled open the passenger door and slid inside. The small space was instantly contaminated with his scent, mixed with the cheap, cloying perfume Judy wore. It made my stomach turn.

He reached for my hand. "Kate, baby, please let me explain."

I flinched away from his touch like he was fire.

He looked pathetic. A small bandage was stuck clumsily to his temple where the glass had cut him. His voice was a desperate, hollow thing.

I stared straight ahead through the windshield. "Explain?" My voice was as cold as the Chicago wind whipping off the lake. "Explain how you were fucking my stepsister tonight? On the very night I planned to celebrate our three-year anniversary?"

"She seduced me! I was drunk, I—"

A bitter laugh escaped my lips, sharp and humorless. "Don't you dare put this on her, Josh. You're a grown man, not a child."

I finally turned to look at him, really look at him. The face I had loved for a thousand nights now seemed weak, selfish. "I have one question. How long?"

His eyes darted away, unable to meet mine. "It was... just this once..."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. I didn't say a word. I just tapped the screen, and a video started to play.

It was from his own dashcam, a file I'd stumbled upon weeks ago while looking for a charging cable and had tried to forget. The timestamp was clear: two months ago. The image was clearer: him and Judy, devouring each other in the front seat of this very car.

The color drained from his face. He stared at the screen, a choked, strangled sound catching in his throat. Every lie, every excuse, evaporated in the blue light of the phone.

I switched off the video and tossed the phone onto the back seat. "Now. What were you saying?"

The fake remorse vanished. He turned completely furious. "So what if it was?" he snarled, his face twisting. "You think I actually love you? Kate, you're so naive."

His words were knives.

"Love you? What is there to love?" he sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. "You get up at 4:30 every morning to bake bread, covered in flour and butter. You call that a 'dream'? That's cheap labor. I took you to team parties, and you didn't even know what caviar was. When people asked what my girlfriend did, I couldn't even say it. You made me the laughingstock of the locker room for a whole year. If it wasn't for your stepfather's influence, I wouldn't have looked at you twice!"

Hah, this was the man I had sacrificed three years of my life for.

I smiled.

Slowly, I pulled the engagement ring from my finger. There was a pale indent on my ring finger, the mark of three years of wear. The cheap little cluster of diamonds he'd presented with such flourish. My treasure. I threw it at him. The ring bounced off Josh's team logo and rolled into the gap between the car seats.

"Josh Tucker," I said, my voice steady. "We're done."

I leaned across the console, my arm brushing his, and shoved his door open. "Get out of my car."

He stared at me, stunned by my finality. Then his face contorted with rage. "You'll regret this, Kate! You're nothing without me!"

He slammed the door, and I didn't hesitate. I stomped on the accelerator, leaving him and his rotten betrayal behind in a cloud of exhaust.

I drove. I had no destination. The Carlisle mansion wasn't home. It was a place that would only make me feel more sick.

I ended up in a deserted parking lot overlooking Lake Michigan, the water a vast, black emptiness that mirrored my own. I killed the engine. Silence. Only the sound of waves crashing against the shore.

I collapsed over the steering wheel, and the sobs I had been holding back finally broke free. A raw, ugly storm of grief for a love that was a lie, for a dignity that had been stolen.

When the tears finally stopped, I pushed myself up, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand. My eyes were clear. Determined.

I pulled out my phone again, my fingers flying across the screen as I searched for short-term apartment rentals.

I had to get out of that house. Away from Judy and her snake of a mother. Now.

I found a small studio, affordable, available immediately. I sent a message to the landlord, arranging to see it in the morning.

A wave of exhaustion washed over me. I decided to spend the night here, in my car. It felt safer than any home I had.

I reclined the seat, pulled a spare blanket from the back, and closed my eyes.

Just as I was drifting into a restless sleep, a sharp rap on the driver's side window jolted me awake.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

My heart leaped into my throat. Standing outside my car, illuminated by the pale moonlight, was Judy. A smug, venomous smile spread across her face.

I rolled the window down a crack, the cold air a slap in the face. "What do you want?"

She leaned against the car, her voice a purr of mock sympathy. "Oh, my dear sister. You didn't really think you could just run away, did you?"
