Chapter 1 of Married To The Forgotten Heir

"Miss Hayes?" The wedding coordinator knocked twice before opening the bridal suite door. "The guests have started arriving."

Aurora looked up from the mirror, her fingers tightening around the edge of her wedding dress. "So soon?"

The coordinator smiled. "Your groom's family is already here."

Aurora let out a shaky laugh. "Then I guess there's no turning back."

"No turning back," the coordinator agreed, and stepped out to check on the flowers, leaving Aurora alone with her own reflection and the soft sound of the venue slowly coming to life beyond the door.

She reached for her phone, still sitting face up on the vanity, and typed a quick message to Felix. Something silly. Something that would make him smile if he read it before he walked into the ceremony. She hit send, then set the phone down, then picked it up again just to look at the little checkmark under her name.

Delivered. Not read yet.

That was fine. He was probably in the middle of getting his tie straightened by his best man, probably laughing about something, probably too distracted to check his phone. She could picture it clearly. Felix always laughed with his whole body, head tipped back, like joy was too big to keep quiet.

She thought of the night he'd shown up outside her apartment with a bag of takeout soup and crackers, the winter she'd caught the flu and thought she'd spend the whole week alone like she always had. He hadn't asked if she needed him. He'd just come, sat on the edge of her bed, and made her laugh so hard she'd nearly choked on the soup. She had loved him a little more fiercely after that, in the quiet, grateful way of someone who wasn't used to being taken care of.

"Almost ready," the makeup artist said, adjusting the veil with careful hands. "Just a little more."

Aurora watched her own face take shape in the mirror. Soft curls. A veil pinned just right. For a moment, she hardly recognized herself.

Then she smiled. This was the woman she'd dreamed of becoming.

She had imagined this exact moment since she was eight years old, sitting by the window at St. Jude's, watching other kids get picked up by families on the weekends, waving through the glass at cars that pulled away without her. She used to wonder what was wrong with her, why nobody circled back for a second look. She had promised herself, in that stubborn way children make promises, that one day she would have people of her own. Not the kind you were given. The kind you chose, and who chose you back.

Today, she was doing exactly that.

Her phone buzzed, and her heart jumped before she even looked down.

Not Felix. A calendar reminder. The ceremony begins in one hour.

She set the phone down a little too fast.

"You okay?" the makeup artist asked, catching the flicker in her expression.

"Fine," Aurora said, and meant it, mostly. "Just excited."

She was excited. That part was true. She thought about the night Felix had proposed, down on one knee in the rain outside her apartment, both of them laughing because neither had thought to bring an umbrella, his tie soaked through and his hair dripping and none of it mattering at all. She thought about his mother hugging her tight the first time they met, saying, "Well, you're one of us now," and how Aurora had cried a little in the car afterward without telling him why.

Today, she would finally have a family sitting in the front row. Just not the one she was born into.

She glanced at the small clock beside the mirror. Fifty minutes.

She texted Felix again. Just checking in. Is everything ok?

The message sat there, unread, the little check marks refusing to turn blue.

Outside, she could hear the room filling ....chairs creaking under new weight, the low rise and fall of conversation, a string quartet tuning somewhere down the hall. She loved that sound. It meant people had shown up. For her.

A knock came again, softer this time. Felix's mother stepped halfway into the room, and for a moment her smile looked exactly like it always did ....warm, a little teary already .....but something about her eyes didn't quite match it.

"You look stunning," she said.

"Thank you." Aurora smiled back. "Is Felix nervous?"

There was the smallest pause. Barely anything. "You know Felix. Cool as ever."

She left before Aurora could ask anything else.

Aurora turned back to the mirror, telling herself it was nothing. The groom got nervous. Phones died. There were a hundred small, boring reasons a person went quiet for an hour on the biggest day of his life.

Through the wall, she caught fragments of two guests chatting as they found their seats.

"....heard the Kingsleys have the ballroom right next door tonight. Very private. Very hush-hush."

"The hotel Kingsleys? I heard that families barely speak to each other."

"Rich people problems," one of them laughed, and their voices faded down the corridor.

Aurora barely registered it. Someone else's wedding, someone else's family drama. She had her own nerves to manage.

She checked the time again. Thirty minutes.

Still nothing from Felix.

She caught sight of two of his groomsmen through the cracked door, standing close together in the hallway, heads bent low, voices too quiet to carry. One of them glanced toward her door and then quickly looked away.

Her stomach tightened, just slightly.

She stood, smoothing her hands down the front of her dress, forcing her shoulders back. Everything is fine, she told herself. Today was the day she stopped being the girl waiting at the window. Today, finally, someone had come for her, and stayed.

She looked down at her phone one last time.

No new messages.

The door to the bridal suite burst open.

The coordinator stood there, face pale, a phone clutched tightly in her hand.

"Aurora," she said, breathless. "You need to see this."
