Kiara's POV
The fog thickened, curling around my legs like icy fingers, every step a battle against the weight of the forest itself. The shadow from before was still there-watching, patient, intelligent. I could feel it pressing against the edges of my mind, testing me, probing the limits of the mark. My chest burned with every heartbeat, the pulse beneath my skin flaring so hot I thought it might set me on fire.
"Kiara," Rylan's voice cut through the mist. He stepped close, storm-gray eyes scanning the shadows, his hand steady on my wrist. "Stay calm. Control the mark. If you panic, it'll overwhelm you."
I wanted to scream, to run, to vanish from this cursed forest that seemed alive with a hunger I could barely comprehend. But I couldn't. I couldn't ignore the pull in my chest, the tether binding me to something I didn't understand, to a boy I should have run from, to a danger I couldn't escape.
"I don't know if I can," I whispered, voice trembling. "It's too much."
"You can," Rylan said, voice firm, almost commanding. "Focus on the mark. Don't fight it-use it. You're stronger than you think."
The shadow moved, gliding through the fog like a predator, red eyes gleaming with malice. My stomach twisted into knots. It wasn't just a creature-it was intelligent. Too intelligent. It knew the pull of the mark. It knew me.
I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling the heat of the mark surge violently. The pulse throbbed in time with my heartbeat, and I let it flare outward. The fog shivered, the trees seemed to lean closer, and the shadow hesitated, tilting its head, studying me.
Rylan's hand tightened on my shoulder. "Good. Keep it steady. Don't let it see fear. Not even for a second."
I drew a deep, ragged breath. I could feel the mark connecting me to the forest, to the wolves, to Rylan, to the shadow. And then, for a fraction of a second, I understood. I could sense it. Feel its intent.
It wanted the mark. It wanted me. And if I faltered, it wouldn't hesitate.
A growl ripped through the clearing, low and feral, echoing between the trees. The wolves appeared from the fog, surrounding us now, eyes glinting amber, teeth bared. They weren't here to attack-they were watching. Waiting. Judging.
"Kiara," Rylan said, storm-gray eyes locked on mine, "you have to control it. You can control it. The forest is listening, the wolves are watching, and the shadow... It's testing you."
I swallowed hard. "Testing me? For what?"
Rylan didn't answer. He never did when the tension was this thick, when the danger was this close. He only pressed closer, protective, magnetic, storm-gray eyes unwavering.
The shadow glided closer, red eyes locking on mine. I could feel the pull of the mark flare violently, scorching my chest, sending heat down my arms. I had no choice-I had to act.
I let the energy surge outward, letting the mark flare like wildfire. The fog quivered, twisting violently, and the wolves staggered back, growling in confusion. The shadow hissed, a sound that vibrated through my bones, and lunged.
I flinched, instinctively raising my hands. Heat flared from my palms, scorching the fog, and the shadow faltered mid-leap. I felt it recoil, almost as if the mark burned it too.
Rylan moved like a blur. One moment, he was beside me, the next he was intercepting the shadow mid-air, his storm-gray eyes flashing. The force with which he moved was terrifying, precise, almost inhuman. He threw the shadow into the fog, but it didn't disappear-it circled back, faster, hungrier, more intelligent.
I stumbled, chest heaving, mark flaring hotter than ever. "Rylan... I can't hold it much longer," I gasped.
"Then don't hold it," he said, voice low, fierce. "Let it flow! Trust the mark! Trust yourself! You're stronger than it is, Kiara! You have to believe that!"
The shadow lunged again, faster than my mind could process. But this time, I didn't flinch. I let the mark surge, sending a pulse of energy so powerful it rippled through the fog, scattering the wolves back and slamming the shadow against a tree.
For a moment, silence.
And then the forest screamed.
Trees groaned as if alive, roots writhing underfoot. The fog churned violently. Amber eyes glimmered all around us. And from the shadows, more forms appeared-wolves, larger and more feral than before, eyes glowing brighter, teeth sharper, radiating hunger.
The shadow hissed, circling me, eyes glowing red, intelligent and deliberate. It wasn't alone. Something in the air shifted. My chest burned with the mark, pulsing violently. I realized then-the forest had made its decision.
It was claiming me.
Rylan gripped my wrist, his storm-gray eyes fierce. "Kiara! Hold on to me! Whatever happens, don't let go!"
I nodded, chest heaving, mark flaring hotter than ever. The energy of the forest, the wolves, the shadow-it all pressed against me, heavy, suffocating, testing me. I could feel my strength being pulled, the mark burning brighter and brighter, threatening to overwhelm me entirely.
And then the ground beneath us shifted. A deep rumble echoed through the forest, shaking the trees. Fog swirled violently, blinding me. Wolves and shadow alike froze, sensing it, wary.
Rylan's grip tightened. "Kiara... whatever comes next... You have to trust the mark. Trust yourself. And trust me."
I nodded, bracing myself. Heart pounding, breath ragged, mark screaming beneath my skin. I had never felt anything like this before-fear, power, and... something else. Something magnetic and impossible that drew me to him even as danger pressed in from every side.
The rumble grew louder, shaking the forest violently. Shadows twisted unnaturally in the fog. Wolves growled, backing away. And then-
The shadow lunged at me, but this time it wasn't alone. Behind it, taller, darker, more terrifying than anything I had ever seen in the forest... emerged a figure cloaked in mist. Eyes glowing crimson, teeth glinting in the dim light, and a presence that radiated pure, undeniable power.
I froze.
The mark flared hotter than ever, scorching through my chest like wildfire. I could feel it screaming at me, warning me, tethering me, pulling me toward this figure.
Rylan shouted my name, storm-gray eyes blazing. "Kiara! Don't-"
But it was too late.
The figure stepped forward. The fog swallowed it, red eyes burning brighter, teeth bared, power radiating from it like the forest itself had come alive. And the wolves around us didn't move-they were watching, waiting, anticipating.
The forest had decided.
And I had no idea if I was ready.
