I spent four years believing my boyfriend was ashamed of his family, not ashamed of me.
Then, on the night he promised to finally introduce me as his future wife, I watched from the staff corridor as Nico Bellini slipped my ring onto another woman's finger.
I ran.
One gunshot, one locked penthouse, and one terrifying stranger later, my entire life changed.
I didn't know the man protecting me from the attack was Damian Bellini, the Mafia boss everyone feared.
I definitely didn't know he was Nico's uncle.
So when I disappeared the next morning, I thought I had escaped the worst mistake of my life.
Six weeks later, I stared at two pink lines.
Then Nico found me first.
He called me cheap.
Damian walked in behind him, looked at the test in my hand, and said only one thing.
“Careful, nephew. You're talking about the mother of my child.”

[MARA'S POV]
The Grand Bellini dining hall was dead silent.
I sat in the high-backed velvet chair at the head of the banquet table—a seat historically reserved for the matriarch of the family. The dark silk of my evening gown fell smoothly over my waist.
Damian was down on one knee in front of me on the cold marble floor. He did not spare a single glance at the dozens of capos and relatives staring in stunned shock. With steady hands, he fastened the delicate crystal strap around my ankle, his palm resting against my calf for a quiet second before he rose.
The heavy double doors crashed open against the wall.
Nico stormed into the hall, his face flushed and his chest heaving. His furious glare swept the room, then froze on the heavy black diamond ring on my left hand.
The platinum setting gleamed under the chandeliers.
Nico looked from my hand to Damian, his jaw trembling in utter disbelief. "What the hell is this?" he shouted, his voice cracking against the silence. "Mara, you’re really choosing my uncle?!"
I met his gaze without a word. I didn't flinch.
Because six weeks ago, Nico was the one who broke me first.
***
Six weeks earlier, I stood in the cramped storage room of the Grand Bellini Hotel, wearing the gray uniform of the banquet staff.
My fingers worked quickly with a needle and thread, adjusting the hem of an ivory cocktail dress. For four long years, Nico Bellini had kept our relationship hidden in the shadows. He had always sworn that the moment his father named him the official heir to the family syndicate, he would announce me to the world as his future bride.
My phone buzzed on the stainless steel prep counter.
*Nico: Tonight, no more hiding.*
A flutter of excitement rushed through my chest. I touched the silver pendant around my neck—the one matching his, given to me on our first anniversary—and hurried down the narrow service hallway toward the grand ballroom.
I stepped behind the heavy backstage curtains, watching through the backstage monitor.
The ballroom was packed with the city's most influential elites. Nico stood center stage beneath the blinding spotlights, looking sharp and commanding in his tailored black tuxedo.
"Tonight marks a new chapter for our family," Nico's voice echoed through the massive speakers. "And as I step into my father's shoes, I need a partner who shares our strength and our vision."
I leaned forward, my heart racing, waiting for him to call me out from the wings.
"Please join me in welcoming my future wife," Nico announced, turning toward the private VIP staircase. "The next matriarch of the Bellini family—Celeste Rossi."
The room erupted into deafening applause.
The air vanished from my lungs. Celeste stepped into the spotlight wearing a couture lace gown, her diamond earrings catching the light. Nico took her left hand with a proud smile and slid a ring onto her fourth finger.
It was the emerald-cut diamond ring.
The exact ring Nico had asked me to pick up from the private jeweler two days ago, claiming he needed the sizing adjusted for the woman he loved.
*Tonight, no more hiding.*
He had never intended to introduce me. He had used me to prepare his grand proposal for someone else.
I didn't storm the stage. I didn't scream or make a scene.
My fingers felt entirely numb as I reached behind my neck, unclasped the silver pendant, and slipped it into the pocket of my uniform vest.
Before I could reach the service exit, a deafening crack echoed through the ballroom.
Gunfire.
Screams tore through the music. Panic exploded instantly. The automated security alarms wailed at top volume, red emergency lights flashing across the ceiling as heavy steel security gates slammed down over the main corridors.
A wave of terrified guests shoved past me, knocking me off balance. I stumbled backward through an open doorway, and the heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind me, the electronic lock snapping into a secure lockdown mode.
Suite 3107, on the private penthouse floor reserved for high-ranking syndicate leaders.
A shadow moved near the blackout curtains.
Before I could turn the brass handle to leave, a cold steel barrel pressed firmly against the center of my forehead.
"Don't move," a deep voice rasped in the dim light.
I stopped breathing.
The man holding the gun was tall and broad-shouldered, wearing a white dress shirt soaked in dark blood down his left side. Broken shards of glass covered the rug near his feet. In his other hand, he held a bloodstained combat blade he had been using to dig a thick glass fragment out of his own ribs.
His gray eyes were sharp and dangerous.
"I'm staff," I whispered, lifting both hands. "The hall locked down. The crowd pushed me in."
My eyes dropped to his flank. Blood was pooling heavily against his waistband. Without waiting for his permission, I reached for my tailoring kit on the side table, grabbed clean cotton towels from the bar, and pulled out my heavy shears.
"You're going to bleed out if you don't keep pressure on that," I said, stepping past the line of his weapon.
He didn't fire. He lowered the handgun slightly, his gaze fixed on my face as I pressed the thick cloth against the deep laceration on his side. He let out a sharp hiss through his teeth, his large hand coming down over mine to clamp the bandage in place. His skin felt intensely hot against my cold fingers.
Heavy footsteps pounded in the corridor outside. Muffled voices spoke in rapid, harsh tones, checking the keycard readers along the hallway.
The man grabbed my forearm, pulled me away from the door, and shoved us both into the narrow cedar wardrobe beside the king-sized bed.
The space was suffocatingly tight. He pressed me flat against the back panel, his wide frame completely shielding my body from the slatted doors. My hands remained pinned between our chests, still pressing the bloodied towel against his ribs.
"Stay quiet," he whispered against my ear, his deep voice vibrating through my chest.
We stayed frozen in the dark. Footsteps dragged past the suite, lingered for a tense moment, and then faded down the carpeted hall.
Silence settled over the room once more.
In the quiet, my phone screen illuminated inside my pocket. A breaking news notification popped up on the display: *Heir Nico Bellini and Celeste Rossi Confirm Engagement With Public Kiss After Venue Attack.*
The attached video showed Nico on the private lower terrace, pulling Celeste into a fierce embrace and kissing her while bodyguards formed a perimeter around them.
A sharp, ragged sound escaped my throat before I could stop it. A hot tear spilled over my lashes, tracking down my cheek.
The man looked down at the glowing screen in my shaking hands, then back to my face. A flash of understanding crossed his features, but he didn't offer empty pity.
"Are you hurt?" he asked quietly.
"No," I managed to say, wiping the tear away with the back of my wrist.
"Do you want me to leave?"
He stepped back an inch, giving me room to push past him and walk out into the suite.
I looked at the narrow exit, thinking about four years of quiet devotion reduced to a humiliating headline. If I walked away now, I was just the discarded staff girl who meant nothing to anyone.
I reached out and grabbed the lapels of his ruined shirt, pulling him firmly toward me.
His gray eyes darkened. He caught my chin between his thumb and forefinger, tilting my head upward.
"Are you sure about this?" he asked, his voice low and gravelly. "Because once I touch you, there's no going back."
"I'm sure," I said.
He pulled me into him, his mouth claiming mine in a fierce, overwhelming kiss that wiped away every lingering memory of Nico Bellini.
Behind us, the bedroom door swung shut, locking us into the dark.
