Chapter 1 of My Daughter Saved a Bleeding Stranger, Why Is My Ex Kneeling to Him

I left my powerful ex-husband with one suitcase, a five-year-old daughter, and a promise that he would never make her afraid again.

Six months later, Maisie and I found a bleeding stranger behind our apartment building in the rain.

I wanted to call an ambulance.

Maisie wanted to save him.

She pressed a pink unicorn bandage onto his cut cheek and whispered, “Don’t die, Uncle. Mommy says people who get hurt need someone to stay.”

The stranger actually smiled.

Three days later, my ex found us.

Sebastian grabbed my daughter and told me I had twenty-four hours to come home or lose her forever.

The next morning, he blocked our street with his men.

Then fifty black cars appeared.

The injured stranger stepped from the center car in a black suit.

Every man around Sebastian went pale.

Maisie squealed, ran straight toward the most dangerous Mafia boss in the city, and shouted:

“Uncle! Your boo-boo is gone!”

***

The rain poured in relentless sheets over the cracked pavement of West End Avenue, turning the gutters into rushing brown streams.

I pulled my umbrella lower against the sharp November wind, keeping a tight hold on Maisie’s small hand. At five years old, my daughter had two modes of walking: sprinting headlong toward danger or stopping every four inches to examine a pebble. Tonight, she had chosen to turn every puddle into a splash zone.

"Mommy, look!" Maisie squealed, stomping both of her bright yellow rubber boots into a puddle deep enough to swallow her ankles. Water sprayed across my jeans.

"Maisie, sweetie, please stop," I said, trying not to shiver as the damp cold seeped through my thin coat. "You’re going to soak your socks."

"Too late," she announced cheerfully, looking up at me with wide, hazel eyes framed by wet eyelashes. "My toes are swimming. We have to drink two whole cups of hot cocoa tonight. With the tiny marshmallows. To restore my stamina."

"Stamina, huh? Where did you even learn that word?"

"From Mrs. Gable’s cartoon." Maisie tugged on my hand, pulling me forward. "She said heroes need stamina after big missions."

"Getting home from daycare isn’t a mission, bug."

"It is when the sky is falling."

I cracked a small smile, but the warmth faded the second we turned the corner toward our apartment building.

Parked beside the curb was a sleek, pitch-black luxury sedan with windows so heavily tinted they looked like solid obsidian. In this neighborhood of rusted sedans and dented minivans, a vehicle like that stuck out like an open blade.

My stomach seized. Instinct took over before logic could catch up. I yanked Maisie behind my legs, shielding her small frame with my own body, my heart hammering against my ribs.

For three agonizing seconds, I stood frozen in the rain, staring at the dark glass, waiting for the door to open. Waiting for the past I had spent three years running from to finally step out into the rain and take everything away.

Nothing moved. The engine wasn't running. The tailpipes were cold.

I exhaled a shaky breath, forcing my white-knuckled fingers to loosen their grip on Maisie’s shoulder.

"Mommy? You’re squishing my coat."

"Sorry, baby," I whispered, blinking the rain from my lashes. "Let's go around the back."

Safety in this city was a fragile glass wall, and I lived every second waiting for it to shatter.

We hurried down the narrow alley behind our brownstone, heading for the rear entrance where the heavy metal security door offered a quicker escape from the storm. But just as we reached the halfway point, a sharp, metallic clatter echoed through the brick corridor.

A metal trash can rocked on its side, rolling across the wet asphalt.

I froze again, pulling Maisie back against the brick wall.

Sitting in the shadowy alcove beside the dumpster, half-hidden beneath the rusted fire escape, was a man.

He was soaked to the bone, slumped against the damp brickwork with his head tilted back. His expensive white dress shirt was torn at the shoulder and plastered to his chest, ruined by broad, dark stains that the falling rain was washing into pale pink rivulets on the concrete.

"Stay behind me," I whispered, reaching blindly into my purse for my pepper spray. My first thought was to turn and run back to the street.

Maisie didn't run. Before I could catch her hood, she slipped out from under my arm and took three tiny steps toward the shadow.

"Maisie, no! Get back here right now!"

She ignored me, stopping two feet from the motionless figure. She tilted her head, crouched down with her hands on her yellow knees, and peered intently into his pale, blood-streaked face.

"Are you dead?" Maisie asked in a serious, quiet voice.

The man’s head jerked slightly. His eyelids fluttered, then opened, revealing a pair of dark, piercing eyes that seemed to cut straight through the shadows. Even battered and bleeding, there was something intensely dangerous about the hard line of his jaw.

Maisie let out a tiny sigh of relief and nodded to herself. "Okay. Good."

She was frightened for exactly three seconds before deciding the stranger was now her patient.

"Maisie!" I lunged forward, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her back into my chest.

The man watched us, his breathing shallow and ragged. His jaw clenched as he shifted, pressing one large, ringed hand against his left side. Blood welled between his long fingers.

"Don't touch him, Maisie," I warned, my voice tight with panic. I looked at the man, scanning the deep gash along his cheekbone and the tear in his shirt. "Sir, can you hear me? You're bleeding heavily."

"I know," he rasped. His voice was deep, rough, and completely devoid of panic, despite the puddle of red gathering beneath him.

I pulled out my phone with a trembling hand, thumb hovering over the keypad. "I’m calling an ambulance."

Before I could press the screen, his hand shot out with terrifying speed.

His fingers closed around my wrist. His grip was ice-cold and immovable as iron.

"No," he said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the breath catch in my throat. "No hospitals. No police."

"You're losing blood," I argued, trying to yank my arm back, but his fingers didn't budge. "You might have internal injuries. I can't just leave you here, but I can't have you bleeding out behind my building either."

"No doctors," he repeated, his tone dropping into a hard, commanding register that brooked no argument. "Just walk away, sweetheart. Take the kid and go inside."

The air between us grew razor-sharp. He wasn't a drunk, and he wasn't a mugger. The authority in his voice belonged to someone used to giving orders that people died obeying.

"Hey!" a small voice piped up. "Let go of my mommy!"

Maisie marched right up to his side, her tiny pink backpack swinging from one shoulder. She unzipped the front pocket with aggressive determination and dug her small hands around inside until she found what she was looking for.

She pulled out a single, crumpled adhesive bandage covered in glitter and bright pink cartoon unicorns.

Peeling the backing off with her teeth and fingers, she stepped right into the man’s space. She stood on her tiptoes, leaned over his slumped form, and slapped the pink unicorn bandage directly over the cut on his cheekbone.

She pressed it down firmly with her palm.

"You can't take it off until you're better," Maisie scolded, pointing a stern finger at his nose. "And you have to say thank you."

The man went completely rigid. For a second, I thought he might snap at her, and my heart jumped into my throat.

Then, his chest heaved, and a low, raspy sound rumbled from his throat.

He laughed.

It was a dark, dry sound, full of disbelief, but the murderous tension in his posture broke. He looked down at the tiny girl in yellow boots, then slowly raised a finger to touch the edge of the unicorn sticker on his face.

"Thank you," he murmured, his gaze softening by a fraction.

"You're welcome," Maisie said, satisfied. "Now you won't leak anymore."

I didn't wait for him to change his mind. I dropped to my knees, keeping Maisie firmly tucked behind my shoulder.

"Let me see," I said, setting my jaw.

"I told you—"

"I’m not calling the cops, but I’m not letting you die on my daughter's watch either," I snapped, cutting him off.

I reached into my bag, pulled out a clean cotton scarf, and pressed it hard against the wound at his side. He hissed through his teeth, his muscles bunching, but he didn't stop me. The cut was deep, likely from a knife, but it didn't look like it had punctured an artery.

"Hold this," I ordered, placing his heavy hand over the makeshift compress. "Press down until the bleeding stops. You need stitches, but this will keep you alive for the next hour."

He stared at me, his dark eyes studying my face with an unnerving, calculating focus. "What's your name?"

"We didn't see anything tonight," I said coldly, standing up and sweeping Maisie into my arms. "And neither did you. We were never here."

He watched us in silence as I hurried toward the back door, punched in the security code with shaking fingers, and slipped inside.

I took the stairs two at a time, carrying Maisie all the way up to our third-floor apartment. Once inside, I locked all three deadbolts, latched the security chain, and leaned my forehead against the cool wood of the door, waiting for my racing pulse to settle.

"Mommy, did we save him?" Maisie asked, already kicking off her wet boots by the shoe rack.

"We helped him, baby," I whispered. "Now come on. Hot cocoa, like I promised."

Two hours later, long after Maisie had fallen asleep in her small bed, the faint rumble of multiple heavy engines vibrated through the floorboards.

I walked quietly to the living room window, pulling back the edge of the curtain.

Down in the alley, the darkness had been replaced by the glaring headlights of four identical black SUVs. A dozen men in dark, tailored suits stood in a perimeter, their coats parted just enough to reveal the leather holsters beneath.

Two of them were supporting the injured man, bowing their heads with absolute deference as they helped him into the rear seat of the lead vehicle.

Beside me, a tiny hand tugged at the hem of my shirt. Maisie had crawled out of bed and was peering through the glass, her face lit by the headlights below.

Before I could pull her back, she raised her hand and cheerfully waved at the alley.

"Bye, Bandage Uncle!" she chirped softly into the glass.

The man paused on the threshold of the car, looking up toward our third-floor window through the rain before the door shut behind him.

A cold dread settled heavy in my gut.

The man we had patched up in the dirt was no ordinary stranger. And whatever world he belonged to, he had just brought it right to our doorstep.
