Zariyah's POV
“HE'S NOT THE ALPHA I USED TO LOVE.”
That was my wolf said to me. Yes, he is not the same anymore. My steps were solid but heavy with the weight of my choice as I left the pack house, the freezing night air biting my skin.
I discovered clarity in the breaking of my heart, which was no longer conflicted. I had given Trevor and us everything, but today I saw that nothing I did would ever be sufficient.
“Let's leave as soon as possible,” my wolf said.
I nodded. “Yes.”
The image of him holding Marina, his eyes filled with a tenderness he hadn’t shown me in months, was burned into my mind. It wasn’t just the betrayal—it was the realization that I had been fighting alone, clinging to a bond he had already let go of.
When I reached the mansion, I didn’t hesitate. I went straight to our room, the one that had once been my sanctuary but now felt like a hollow shell.
“This is for the better, Zariyah. We don't deserve this. Let's leave him...” my wolf said.
I sighed deeply. “I really do love him. But you are right.”
I took out a bag and started packing, folding my things with shaking hands. I couldn't stop, even though everything I put in the bag felt like a piece of my heart was shattering.
As I zipped up the bag, my hand instinctively went to my swollen belly. “It’s just you and me now,” I whispered, my voice quivering. “We’re going to be okay.”
I sank onto the edge of the bed, my hand gently tracing circles over my tummy. My baby kicked lightly in response, as if to reassure me.
Almost nine months pregnant. But here we are...
“Everything will be alright.”
A tear slid down my cheek, but I quickly wiped it away. This wasn’t the life I had envisioned for us, but I would do everything in my power to make sure my child was loved and cared for.
Elder Tommy’s home was quiet when I arrived, the warm glow of candlelight spilling through the windows. I knocked softly, and within moments, the door creaked open.
“Luna Zariyah,” Elder Tommy greeted, his wise eyes scanning my face. “I had a feeling you’d come tonight.”
“Please,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm raging within me. “I need the papers to break our bond. I can’t stay tied to him any longer.”
He studied me for a moment, then nodded solemnly. “Come in.”
The ritual to sever a mate bond was rare and irreversible. It wasn’t a decision I had made lightly, but as Elder Tommy explained the process, I felt no doubt. The love I had for Trevor would always remain, but it wasn’t enough to endure the pain of his neglect and betrayal.
When the papers were in my hands, I hesitated for only a moment before signing them. Each stroke of the pen felt like a wound, but also like a release.
“It will take effect immediately as soon as the Alpha signs it,” Elder Tommy said gently. “You’ll feel the bond break. It will hurt, but it will also free you.”
I nodded as I walked out of his house, holding the documents carefully. Even though the agony in my chest was excruciating, I told myself it would only last a little while.
The silence was haunting me back at home. The house where I had once dreamed of a happy family seemed chilly and empty.
I smiled bitterly at myself. “I guess, this is a goodbye.”
I sat at our room's desk and gazed at a blank sheet of paper. I knew I had to keep things simple, but there was so much I wanted to say to Trevor and so much I wanted him to understand.
I folded the letter carefully and left it on the desk where I knew he would see it. With a final glance around the room, I picked up my bag and walked out.
Dearest Trevor,
I love you. I have always loved you, and I always will. But love isn’t enough when it’s one-sided. I’ve fought for us, for our bond, for our family. But tonight, I realized that I can’t fight alone anymore. I deserve more, and so does our child.
I’m letting you go. I hope one day you’ll find happiness, even if it’s not with me.
