Killed by the Ones I Loved

Aria POV

I pushed open the door to my bedroom.

It swung inward, revealing a scene that seemed to pull all the air from the room.

Leo—the family's most feared Enforcer—was entangled with Chloe on the damask coverlet of my own bed.

His dark hair was a mess against the pillows, the familiar cartography of muscle across his back flexing as he held her.

Chloe's hands were tangled in the silk sheets—my sheets.

I stood in the doorway, my lungs feeling as if they had been packed with ice.

My vocal cords felt glued together. The air in my lungs vanished, forcing my mouth open as I gulped at the bedroom's atmosphere, thick with a perfume that was not my own.

My movements felt detached, as if I were watching a stranger as I walked over to my nightstand.

I picked up the filigreed silver frame holding a photograph of Leo and me, taken on my graduation day.

It was the day he had staged a proposal before the assembled families, a piece of grand, possessive theater that had publicly bound me to him.

My fingers, numb and clumsy, worked the photo out of the frame and tore it, not with violence, but with a strange, methodical calm.

I let the pieces drift to the hardwood floor, turned, and walked out of the room. As I pivoted, the metal pins in my right knee grated against bone, a dull, internal friction that forced my weight abruptly onto my left side.

"Aria!" Leo shouted, his voice echoing in the vaulted hallway.

I heard the rustle of cloth and the impact of his bare feet rushing after me.

He caught up to me near the grand staircase, his stride easily overcoming the lurching gait my leg forced upon me, his hand closing around my arm.

"Let go," I said, my voice devoid of inflection.

"I won't deny it," Leo said, his jaw tight. "But do not blame Chloe. I pursued her. I wanted her."

He stepped in front of me, shielding the hallway as if I posed a physical threat to the girl who had just dismantled my life.

A moment later, Chloe emerged, clutching one of my silk robes around her body.

She played the part of the fragile victim flawlessly.

Tears, too ready to be real, streamed down her face as she looked past me toward Dante, who had just appeared at the top of the stairs to see about the commotion.

"Please, Dante... Leo," Chloe sobbed, her voice trembling with a finely tuned helplessness. "Don't let her leave. Make Aria stay. I could not live with myself if she became homeless because of me."

Slowly, I let my eyes drift to Dante.

The memory arose unbidden: the reek of cordite and blood in the air after our parents' assassination. I saw him on his knees amidst the carnage, vowing I was the family's one inviolable treasure.

I remembered driving the getaway car, a desperate, wild flight from a rival cartel, the spray of enemy gunfire that had sent splinters of bone through my leg just to keep him alive.

He had held me that night, his words choked with unshed tears, declaring I was his only weakness.

Then I looked at Leo.

I remembered the silent, lethal boy who would slip through the hedgerows from the neighboring Estate.

I remembered taking a machete slash to my right arm, a desperate bid to buy him the two seconds he needed when kidnappers tried to take him.

In the aftermath, he had sworn a Blood Oath to protect me.

I traced the raised, silvered line of the old scar on my right arm with my fingertips.

In that moment, the entire artifice of my protected life crumbled, not with a bang, but with a quiet, internal settling of dust.

My blood brother and my sworn protector had defected.

"I never want to see either of you again," I stated, my voice a strange, clear monotone.

I turned to walk down the stairs, ready to leave the Estate behind.

Suddenly, my path was blocked.

Dante and Leo stepped in front of me, a wall of muscle and unspoken menace.

"You're not going anywhere," Dante growled, his eyes flat and hard as river stones.

"My heart belongs to Chloe now," Leo admitted, his gaze passing straight through me as if I were made of glass. "That proposal at your graduation? It was a tactical necessity."

I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat.

"I proposed to you to keep other syndicates away from Chloe," Leo sneered, his words like methodical, spaced blows. "You have always been a spoiled, arrogant child, Aria. It is time you learned to share."

Hearing those words, something inside me went still and silent.

I didn't argue. I didn't fight back.

I simply sidestepped their bodies, walked away, and left them to their twisted reality.

I walked out of the front doors and stepped into the freezing rain.

The memories of my family, once cherished, now felt like foreign artifacts, washed clean of meaning by the unforgiving storm.

I did not look back. But if I had, I would have seen the first hairline crack in Dante's resolve—the way his hand tightened on the banister, the way his eyes followed me into the rain. It was not enough to stop me. It was never enough. But it was there. And it would grow. What I did not know was that by the time it finally shattered, I would no longer be alive to see it.
