Everyone knew for whom these legs were broken.
But now she was saying that my broken legs were not worthy of wearing wedding shoes?
"Why should I apologize?"
"Today is Jansen's birthday. The birthday boy is the most important. Don't you understand this?"
Celeste stared at me angrily and spoke loudly.
Back then, I only heard that her first love was very powerful, but I really did not expect that Celeste, who was usually decisive and smart, would be fooled by such a clumsy method.
I was too lazy to pay attention to her, so I turned around and pushed the wheelchair back to my room.
Then, behind me I heard Jansen crying and Celeste coaxing him.
"Don't worry, I will definitely teach him a lesson."
I locked the door in my small room and started trying to move around.
I had been doing a lot of rehabilitation training secretly these days and my current condition had gradually improved.
Melinda was afraid that I would be too sad, so she kept asking me to go out and play with her.
I could not bear to see the old lady worrying, so I opened the door and let her push me out.
The scenery in the courtyard was so exquisite and splendid, even more than the scenery when I proposed and got engaged to Celeste.
Celeste and Jansen were alumni of the same high school and she invited almost all of their friends to join in.
They stood on stage telling stories from the past, holding hands and playing around, very intimate.
I seemed to be the only outsider in the lively scene.
Everyone knew that I was Celeste's fiancé, but they all tacitly ignore me.
"They were really a perfect match back then, but they broke up for no apparent reason. I felt sorry for them for a long time."
"Yeah, it looks like bringing back the old memories?"
"How can that be possible? Celeste's fiancé is still here!"
Amidst the discussions, a few unfriendly glances fell on me.
That kind of inquiry and disdain made me feel a little scared.
I patted Melinda's hand and asked her to push me away.
But the moment we turned around, the projection screen in the yard lit up.
The noisy, chaotic sounds and images unfolded on the screen. I turned my head in horror to look at those images, my body trembling unconsciously.
The whole room was boiling with excitement and everyone looked over.
Even Melinda foolishly froze in place.
Jansen stood there, laughing wildly, as if his eyes were telling me that I had lost.
Celeste anxiously and hurriedly turned off the projection and strode towards me.
"Is this the lesson you're teaching me?" I asked in flat tone.
She stopped her steps and a hint of fatigue appeared on her beautiful face, but she did not deny it.
I pushed my wheelchair and turned away in disappointment. After Melinda came to her senses, she followed me, calling my name.
"It's so dirty!"
"Celeste is actually willing to marry him?"
I left those words behind my ears as if I had not heard them.
As soon as I got back to my room, I locked myself in. The unprecedented humiliation made me numb.
Late at night, I closed my eyes to rest, but I smelled Celeste's scent.
She hugged me from behind and patiently coaxed me.
"I'm sorry, Pieter. I know you blame me, but I really can't do anything about it."
"I feel guilty about Jansen and you. I don't know what to do."
"Tomorrow is the day we get our marriage certificate. Can we go together tomorrow morning?"
I replied only with the word "Alright".
Perhaps it was time to leave.
The next morning, Celeste took me to the City Hall.
But she got tripped up by a phone call near the door. The person on the other end was making a hysterical noise and Celeste was trying to comfort him patiently.
I stood up from my wheelchair, turned around and took a taxi to leave.
The taxi sped past and I looked at Celeste's furrowed brows and whispered goodbye.
Celeste was a little tired from coaxing, thinking of me who did not need to be coaxed on weekdays.
When she turned around, she saw that the wheelchair was empty.
She grabbed passers-by and asked in a panic.
"Have you seen the man in the wheelchair?"
She asked several passersby one after another, but they all shook their heads in fear and walked away.
She was in a completely panic.
She thought I was kidnapped again and called Jansen ....
