My Husband Wanted Me to Lose My Memory. So I Pretended I Did.

Two days after the hospital discharged me, Ryan sat on the edge of our bed, holding a porcelain bowl of soup.

"Your father didn't even call, Charlotte," Ryan said. He kept his eyes locked on mine, searching for a reaction. "The Sinclair family cut you off entirely."

I stared at the blank wall opposite the bed, forcing my hands to tremble. Under the thick down comforter, my thumb rested on the side button of my phone. The voice memo app was already running, capturing every lie spilling from his mouth.

"Why?" I asked, keeping my tone fragile and hollow. "Why would my own father abandon me?"

"Because you chose me." Ryan set the bowl on the nightstand. He reached out, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. "They hated that you married outside their elite circle. When you had the accident, I begged them to help with the medical bills. They hung up on me."

A perfect, calculated lie.

"I have no one," I whispered, dropping my gaze to my lap.

"You have me." Ryan grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him. His fingers dug slightly into my skin. "I'm the only one who truly loves you. I'm the only one who stayed."

I nodded slowly. "Thank you, Ryan. I don't know what I would do without you."

"Eat your soup," he instructed, picking up the bowl again. "You need your strength."

I opened my mouth, letting him feed me the lukewarm broth. Every swallow felt like chewing glass.

"Did I have friends?" I asked, pushing the narrative further. "Someone must have visited me in the hospital besides you."

"You isolated yourself," Ryan answered without missing a beat. "You pushed everyone away because of your paranoia. That's why your memory loss is a fresh start for us. We can rebuild."

"Rebuild," I repeated.

"Yes," he smiled. "Just you and me."

Thursday evening, the heavy oak door of Ryan's home office stood open a fraction of an inch.

I pressed my back against the corridor wall, clutching a stack of folded laundry to my chest.

"Ryan, are you actually falling for her again?" Vanessa's voice echoed from inside, sharp and whiny. "You spend hours in there playing nurse."

"Keep your voice down," Ryan snapped.

A chair squeaked as someone stood.

"I won't," Vanessa shot back. "You look at her like you actually care. Are you forgetting our deal? You promised me we would be together."

I raised my phone to the crack in the door, tapping the red circle on the screen.

"Impossible," Ryan scoffed. "She's a tool, Vanessa. Nothing more. I just need her to sign the final asset transfer papers."

"Then make her sign them now."

"She needs to trust me completely first," Ryan argued, his tone lowering into a dark growl. "Dr. Aris warned me that pushing a traumatized brain too fast causes resistance. I play the devoted husband, she signs the documents willingly, and then the company is mine."

"And then what?" Vanessa pressed, her shoes tapping against the hardwood. "You keep her around as a pet?"

"Once the company is mine, she'll never leave this house," Ryan stated coldly. "I'll lock her in the guest wing. She'll be entirely dependent on me until she rots."

"You better mean that," Vanessa muttered.

"I always mean what I say," Ryan answered. "Now come here."

The sound of a heavy kiss followed.

"You need to hurry," Vanessa whispered between breaths. "The board meeting is next week. If she doesn't sign by then, the acquisition stalls."

"She'll sign," Ryan promised. "I have her eating out of the palm of my hand."

I ended the recording, slipped the device into my pocket, and walked silently back to the master bedroom.

The next morning, Ryan sat at the dining table, rubbing his temples while staring at a stack of folders.

"You look exhausted," I said, setting a mug of black coffee next to his laptop.

He sighed, leaning back in his chair. "The merger is creating a mountain of paperwork. My assistant quit yesterday, and I'm drowning in filing."

I pulled out the chair next to him and sat down. "Let me help."

Ryan frowned. "Charlotte, you're still recovering."

"I might not remember my past," I replied, keeping my expression entirely earnest. "But I know how to read a spreadsheet. Let me organize the files for you. It will make me feel useful."

He studied my face for a long moment. A smug smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. He thought his conditioning was working perfectly.

"Alright," Ryan agreed, standing up. "I have to meet the board downtown. Sort the Q3 invoices into the main drive. Don't touch the encrypted folders."

"I won't," I promised.

The second the front door clicked shut, I dropped the innocent act.

I slid into his leather chair and woke up the laptop. I pulled a silver flash drive from my shoe and shoved it into the USB port.

Ryan thought I was a blank slate. He forgot I designed the Whitmore Group's internal network three years ago.

My fingers flew across the keyboard. I bypassed his basic firewall in thirty seconds. The encrypted folders opened one by one.

Offshore accounts. Shell company registrations. Embezzlement logs dating back twenty-four months.

I dragged every single file onto my drive. The progress bar inched across the screen.

Seventy percent.

My phone buzzed on the table. A text from Ryan: Forgot my briefcase. Turning around.

Eighty-five percent.

A car engine rumbled in the driveway.

Ninety percent.

Footsteps sounded on the front porch. The lock turned.

One hundred percent.

I yanked the flash drive out, closed the encrypted windows, and opened the Q3 invoice folder just as Ryan walked into the room.

"Forgot my briefcase," he muttered, grabbing the leather bag from the sofa.

"I already finished the first stack," I said, pointing to the screen.

He didn't even look. "Good girl," he praised, walking out again.

At midnight, the air in the underground parking garage bit at my skin. The concrete pillars cast long shadows across the empty space.

Alexander leaned against the hood of his car. He wore a dark wool coat, his eyes tracking my approach.

"Did you get it?" he asked, stepping forward.

I pulled the silver flash drive from my pocket and pressed it into his palm. "Everything. The overseas accounts, the cooperative funds he siphoned, and the fake vendor invoices."

Alexander closed his fist around the metal. He looked down at me, his gaze tracing the dark circles under my eyes and the pale hollows of my cheeks.

"You look exhausted," he noted, his voice losing its usual sharp edge.

"Playing the brain-damaged, submissive wife takes a lot of energy," I answered dryly.

Alexander reached out. His large, warm hand wrapped around my cold fingers. The sudden contact sent a jolt up my arm.

"Charlotte," he said, stepping closer. "Just say the word, and I'll take you away right now. We have enough to destroy him. You don't have to go back to that house."

I stared at our joined hands. A part of me wanted to get in his car and never look back.

I pulled my hand away.

"No," I replied firmly. "If I leave now, he claims I went crazy and ran off. He spins the narrative. I want Ryan to watch himself lose everything, just like he destroyed my life. I want him to feel the trap closing on him."

Alexander studied my face, a silent understanding passing between us.

"Alright," he agreed, opening the passenger door. "Get in. Let's verify these files before you go back."

I slid into the leather seat. Alexander got in behind the wheel and opened his laptop, plugging in the drive.

The blue light of the screen illuminated his sharp jawline. He clicked through the folders rapidly, his eyes scanning the stolen data.

Suddenly, his fingers stopped moving.

"What is it?" I asked, leaning closer to the dashboard.

Alexander turned the laptop screen toward me, pointing to a scanned legal document buried in the offshore folder.

"Ryan isn't just stealing from your family," Alexander said, his tone turning dangerously low. "Look at the signature on this life insurance policy."
