Chapter 1 of I Paid for His MD, He Married Someone Else

The champagne bottle felt heavier than usual in my hands as I climbed the stairs to our apartment, my other hand gripping the paper bag containing Marcus's favorite ribeye steak. Seven years. Seven long years of double shifts at the diner, of choosing generic cereal over name brands, of wearing the same winter coat until the lining fell apart—all so Marcus could chase his dream of becoming a doctor.

Today, that sacrifice finally meant something. Dr. Marcus Chen. The title rolled around in my mind like a prayer answered.

I fumbled with my keys, practically vibrating with excitement. The champagne was the good stuff—thirty dollars I couldn't really afford, but this was worth it. We were worth it. All those nights when he studied until dawn while I worked late shifts, all those times I assured him we'd make it through another month of ramen noodles and overdue bills.

"Marcus?" I called out as I pushed open the door, expecting to find him collapsed on the couch with his medical journals scattered around him like always.

Instead, I heard the sizzle of something cooking in our kitchen.

The smell hit me first—garlic and herbs, something that definitely wasn't leftover takeout. My steps slowed as I rounded the corner, the champagne bottle suddenly slippery in my sweaty palm.

A woman stood at our stove, her back to me, dark hair pinned up in a neat bun. She was wearing my silk robe—the one Marcus bought me for Christmas two years ago, the only expensive thing I owned.

"Excuse me?" The words came out sharper than I intended.

The woman turned, and I saw a face I'd never seen before. Pretty, with high cheekbones and dark eyes that seemed to assess me with cool calculation. When she smiled, her accent was thick, unfamiliar.

"Oh! You must be Ivy." She gestured with the wooden spoon she was holding, completely at ease in my kitchen. "Marcus, he tell me all about you. You are the sponsor, yes?"

The champagne bottle slipped from my numb fingers, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud. The cork shot across the room, and foam erupted everywhere, soaking into the rug Marcus and I had picked out together at a thrift store.

"The what?" My voice sounded strange, distant.

"The sponsor," she repeated, stirring something that smelled like the comfort food I'd never learned to make. "Marcus, he explain to me how you help him with school, with money. Very generous. I say thank you."

My legs felt unsteady. "Where... where is Marcus?"

"Here."

I spun around to find him emerging from our bedroom, hair still damp from a shower, wearing the shirt I'd ironed for him this morning. But something was wrong with his face—no surprise, no guilt, just a kind of resigned irritation, like I was a problem he'd been putting off dealing with.

"Marcus, who is this woman? Why is she in our apartment? In my robe?"

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture I'd always found endearing now seeming calculated. "Ivy, this is Brenda. My wife."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I actually stumbled backward, my hip catching the edge of the counter.

"Your what?"

"My wife," he repeated, each word deliberate and clear. "We married in my hometown before I came to America. She just got her visa approved."

The kitchen tilted sideways. Seven years. Seven years of believing in us, in our future, in the life we were building together.

"Marcus, what are you talking about? We've been together since—"

"Since I needed someone to co-sign my apartment lease," he interrupted, his voice matter-of-fact. "Since I needed someone with good credit to help me get through medical school. You were... a necessary investment."

Brenda had stopped stirring and was watching us with the detached interest of someone observing a mildly entertaining television show.

My throat felt like it was closing. "Investment?"

"Come on, Ivy." Marcus's laugh was cold, foreign. "Did you really think someone like me would end up with someone like you permanently? Look at yourself. Look at me. I'm a doctor now. I have options."

Each word was a scalpel, precise and devastating. I gripped the counter harder, my knuckles white.

"The trips home to visit your parents... the phone calls in another language..."

"All real," he said with a shrug. "Just not the story I told you. My parents have been asking when I'd bring Brenda to America for years."

"Seven years," I whispered.

"Seven years of playing house with a waitress who thought she could marry a doctor." His eyes were flat, empty of any warmth I'd ever imagined I'd seen there. "I gave you the fantasy. You gave me the foundation. Fair trade."

Brenda made a soft sound of sympathy—not for me, I realized, but for Marcus having to deal with this awkward situation.

Something cold and sharp crystallized in my chest, cutting through the shock and pain. I walked past both of them to the wine cabinet Marcus had insisted we needed for "when we entertained colleagues."

I pulled out a bottle of the expensive champagne he'd been saving, the one he said was for "special occasions." My hands were steady as I opened it, steady as I poured it into one of the crystal glasses his "parents" had supposedly sent for our anniversary.

Marcus watched me with growing unease. "Ivy, what are you—"

"Celebrating," I said, taking a sip. The champagne was perfect—crisp, expensive, everything Marcus thought he deserved. "You have until midnight to pack whatever you can carry."

He laughed, but it sounded forced. "This is my apartment. The lease is in my name."

"The lease, yes." I reached into my purse and pulled out a manila folder I'd been saving for tonight's celebration. "But this is the deed. Funny thing about buying a house for someone who's not legally allowed to own property yet. The bank required an American citizen as the primary owner."

Marcus's face went ashen as I handed him the document. His name was nowhere on it.

"The car title is in my name too," I continued conversationally. "And that private practice you've been dreaming of opening? The one I co-signed the business loan for? I'm not just a co-signer, Marcus. I'm the majority stakeholder."

The crystal glass felt solid and real in my hand as Marcus stared at the papers, his face cycling through disbelief, rage, and something that looked almost like fear.

"Midnight," I repeated. "After that, I change the locks."
