Chapter 1 of I Exposed My Alpha’s Secret Heir

The delivery notification shouldn't have come to me at all.

I was reviewing routine pack correspondence in my office — vendor invoices, alliance meeting confirmations, the usual administrative flow that kept Ironveil running beneath the surface of Alpha commands and warrior drills. Fifteen years of building this pack meant I knew every supply chain, every contracted service, every line item that passed through our treasury. It was tedious work. Most Lunas delegated it entirely.

I never did.

The email was buried in a forwarded thread, auto-sorted by our logistics coordinator who'd flagged it for my review because the shipping name didn't match our vendor database. I almost deleted it. My finger hovered over the key.

Then I saw the amount.

One thousand dollars. For a toy. A custom-built scale model, according to the attached invoice, shipped to a residential address in Cedarfall territory. The recipient name read: M. Holden.

I stared at the screen.

Cedarfall was neutral ground, a buffer zone between three pack territories where wealthy wolves built second homes for privacy. We had no operations there. No storage facilities, no safe houses, no reason for pack funds to route to a residential address under any variation of my mate's name.

I opened the attachment. The toy was elaborate — a hand-painted vintage car with working doors and leather interior, the kind of thing collectors spent months commissioning. The shipping confirmation showed it had been delivered two days ago.

Deep in my chest, something stirred.

Sable. My wolf. She'd been so quiet for so long that I sometimes forgot she had a voice at all. Seven years of near silence, ever since the miscarriage had nearly snuffed her out entirely. Holden used to joke, gently, that my wolf was just resting. Conserving strength for when we finally had our heir.

Now she spoke. One word, cold and certain.

*Wrong.*

I printed the invoice. Folded it carefully. Slipped it into my jacket pocket and locked my office door behind me.

The drive to Cedarfall took forty minutes. I didn't tell anyone I was leaving.

The address led me to a quiet street lined with new construction — luxury homes with privacy fencing and manicured lawns, the kind of neighborhood where people paid extra to not have neighbors who asked questions. I parked across the street from number 428, three houses down, and killed the engine.

The house was beautiful. Two stories, soft gray siding, black shutters. A porch swing. Flower boxes beneath the windows, bright with late-season blooms. The lawn was perfect. There was a basketball hoop in the driveway and a small bike lying on its side near the garage.

I sat very still.

The front door opened. A boy came outside — maybe seven years old, wearing a bright blue shirt and holding something in his hands. He walked to the middle of the yard and knelt down, setting the object carefully on the grass. It was the car. The custom model. He was making engine noises, pushing it in careful loops.

I watched him play.

He had dark hair. Holden's hair. He turned his head to call something toward the house, and I saw his profile. The line of his jaw. The set of his eyes. The exact way Holden tilted his head when he was concentrating on something small.

The door opened again.

Mia stepped onto the porch.

She was wearing jeans and a sweater, her hair pulled back in a casual ponytail. She looked comfortable. At home. She called the boy's name — I couldn't hear it from this distance — and gestured for him to come inside. He grabbed the car and ran toward her, and she caught him in a brief hug before ushering him through the door.

Before she followed him inside, she paused. Looked up at the sky like she was checking the weather. Smiled faintly to herself.

Then she went in. The door closed.

I sat in my car as the light faded. Afternoon became dusk became full dark. The streetlights came on. A neighbor walked a dog past my window. I didn't move.

Seven years old. Born the same year I bled alone in our pack house bedroom while Holden held my hand and told me the Moon Goddess was showing us mercy.

I should have cried. I wanted to. But nothing came. Just cold. Just Sable's single word, repeating.

*Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.*

Eventually I started the car and drove home.

Holden was in the kitchen when I walked in, finishing dinner preparations. He looked up and smiled — that warm, easy smile that had always made me feel safe.

"There you are," he said. "I was starting to worry. Everything okay?"

"Fine," I said. My voice sounded normal. I was surprised by that. "Just had some administrative things to wrap up."

"Well, you're just in time." He gestured to the table, already set with two plates. "I made your favorite."

I looked at the food. Roasted chicken. Garlic potatoes. The exact meal he'd made the night he proposed, fifteen years ago on a terrace under string lights.

"It looks wonderful," I said.

We sat down. He poured wine. Asked about my day in the easy, familiar way he always did. I answered. Asked about his. He told me about a border patrol report, a conversation with Marcus about next quarter's training schedule. Ordinary things. Pack business.

"Oh," he said, as though just remembering. "The Alliance Banquet is three weeks out. I was thinking we should finalize the seating arrangements this weekend. Make sure the visiting Alphas feel properly welcomed."

"Of course," I said. I took a sip of wine. "Do you have a preliminary list?"

"I'll send it to you tomorrow." He reached across the table and took my hand. His thumb brushed across my knuckles. "I know these big events stress you out. But this one's important. Really important. I want everything perfect."

"It will be," I said.

He smiled. Squeezed my hand. Let go.

We finished dinner. He cleared the plates. I went upstairs.

In our bedroom, I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself. Same face. Same hair. Same mate-mark scar on the inside of my wrist where Holden had bitten down fifteen years ago, sealing the bond the Moon Goddess had supposedly blessed.

I ran my thumb across it. Slowly. Feeling the raised tissue, the permanent mark of a permanent lie.

Then I stopped.

I would never do that again.

I sat down at my desk and opened my laptop. Pulled up Ironveil's financial archive — every transaction, every contract, every approved expenditure for the past decade. My personal access as Luna gave me clearance to everything.

I started reading.

By dawn, I had found three irregularities in payments to something called Cedarfall Security Consulting. The contract was filed under Sergio's name — Mia's brother, a wolf I'd met twice at territorial functions and never thought about again. The amounts were significant but not alarming on their own. Fifty thousand here. Seventy-five thousand there. Spread across eighteen months.

I cross-referenced them against my own ledgers — the meticulous, handwritten records I'd kept since Ironveil's earliest days, when we had six wolves and a dream.

None of the payments corresponded to any actual security work I could identify.

I printed the discrepancies. Added them to the folded invoice in my jacket pocket.

Then I made a phone call to someone who didn't owe Holden anything.

A rogue investigator named Dex, who worked for cash and asked no questions about why a Luna might need financial forensics done off the books.

"I need everything," I said quietly into the phone. "Bank records. Property deeds. Timeline. I need to know exactly how long this has been going on and exactly how much was taken."

"How fast do you need it?" Dex asked.

"Three weeks," I said.

There was a pause. Then: "You're paying for speed."

"I'm paying for accuracy," I corrected. "Speed is non-negotiable."

"Understood."

I hung up.

Outside, the sun was rising. Holden would be awake soon, ready for his morning run. He'd ask if I wanted to join him, like he always did. I'd say no, like I always did, and he'd kiss my forehead and tell me he loved me.

And I would smile.

Because I had three weeks to build a case that would end him.

And I was very, very good at building things.
