I Dumped My Contract Mate Then My Wolf Chose Him

The regional alliance gathering is held at neutral territory—a sprawling stone hall built generations ago for exactly this purpose. Pack banners hang from the rafters. The air smells like leather and old wood and the layered scents of too many wolves in one space.

I'm here because Silverfang needs three alliance renewals signed before winter, and I'm the one who knows which clauses to push and which to let slide. Lilian is beside me, reviewing territorial maps. Wyatt is somewhere near the refreshment table, looking soft and harmless and entirely out of his depth.

I'm in the middle of mediating a boundary dispute between two minor packs when the room shifts.

Not loudly. Not obviously. Just a subtle change in pressure, like weather moving in. Wolves near the entrance glance up. A few step aside without seeming to decide to.

I know what that means.

An Alpha has arrived.

I don't look. I keep my attention on the Gamma in front of me, nodding as he explains his pack's position on river access rights. But my wolf—awake now, undeniably present—goes very still.

Then I smell him.

Not cedar. Not rain. Something sharper. Colder. The scent I spent four years chasing through academy hallways and another decade trying to forget.

Cassius Vane.

I finish the sentence I'm speaking. Sign off on the river clause. Hand the document back to the Gamma with a smile that costs me nothing because I learned years ago how to make my face do what I need it to.

Then I turn.

He's across the hall, speaking with Ironclaw's Beta. Taller than I remember. Broader. His aura rolls off him in waves—dominant, controlled, the kind of presence that makes unmated wolves drop their eyes without thinking. His hair is darker now, cut shorter. He's dressed in formal pack attire, the Ironclaw crest visible on his jacket.

He looks exactly like what he is: a powerful Alpha in his prime, newly unmated, surveying a room full of wolves who know his name.

Our eyes meet across the hall.

Something flickers in his expression. Recognition. Interest. The beginning of a smile.

I look away first. Return to my files.

Lilian's hand touches my elbow. "You okay?"

"Fine."

"Charli—"

"I'm fine."

She doesn't push. But she stays close.

Cassius finds me within ten minutes.

I'm reviewing trade terms with an Ashenveil liaison when his scent hits me again—closer now, deliberate. I don't look up. I finish reading the paragraph in front of me. Initial the margin note. Only then do I raise my eyes.

He's standing two feet away. Too close. The kind of proximity that assumes permission.

"Charli." My name in his mouth sounds proprietary. Like he's used it a thousand times. Like he has the right. "You look well."

I set down my pen. "Alpha Vane."

His smile widens slightly. "Cassius. We don't need formality."

I don't correct him. I also don't use his first name.

The Ashenveil liaison glances between us, sensing the tension, and excuses himself with a murmured apology. Lilian stays. Her arms are crossed. Her expression is not friendly.

Cassius doesn't acknowledge her. His attention is entirely on me.

"I heard you took a contracted mate," he says. "Duskhollow Pack, wasn't it?"

"That's correct."

"Interesting choice."

The words land with the weight he intends. I keep my face neutral.

"Is there something I can help you with, Alpha Vane?"

"Actually, yes." He gestures toward the strategy rooms off the main hall. "Ironclaw and Silverfang have alliance terms coming up for renewal. I'd like to discuss them privately. Clear up any potential complications before they become problems."

It's a reasonable request. Perfectly legitimate under bilateral protocol.

It's also a trap.

I know it. Lilian knows it. Cassius knows I know it.

"Of course," I say. "I'll have my Beta coordinate scheduling—"

"Now would be convenient."

Not a question. Not quite a command. Something in between that uses his Alpha aura like punctuation.

Before I can respond, a warm presence appears at my shoulder.

Wyatt.

He's holding two coffee cups. His eyes are soft. His posture is relaxed, almost submissive. He looks like he wandered over without any particular purpose.

"Sorry," he says, handing me one of the cups. "Took forever at the station. They were out of your usual blend."

I take the coffee. The cup is warm against my palm.

Cassius looks at Wyatt for the first time. His gaze travels from Wyatt's face down to his shoulders, his stance, the way he's standing slightly behind me rather than beside me. I watch Cassius's assessment happen in real time: young, slight, soft-eyed, minor pack, weak aura.

Dismissed.

The contempt doesn't need words. It's in the single glance, the fractional pause, the way Cassius's attention returns to me as if Wyatt stopped existing the moment the evaluation finished.

"Your contracted mate," Cassius says. Not a question.

"Wyatt Caine," I say. "Duskhollow Pack."

Wyatt extends his hand. Cassius takes it—briefly, the kind of handshake that communicates obligation rather than respect.

"Pleasure," Cassius says.

Wyatt smiles. It doesn't reach his eyes. "Likewise."

Cassius turns back to me. "The strategy session. Now?"

I glance at Wyatt. He's still smiling, still holding his coffee cup, still looking like the least threatening wolf in the hall.

But his scent—cedar and rain—has thickened in the last thirty seconds. It wraps around me like a physical barrier.

"I'll wait," Wyatt says quietly. "Take your time."

I set my coffee down. Follow Cassius toward the private rooms.

Behind me, I hear Lilian's low voice: "You're marking her chair, aren't you."

Wyatt doesn't answer.

The strategy room is small and windowless. A table. Four chairs. Alliance documents already spread across the surface—Cassius came prepared.

He closes the door.

We sit. I pull the Silverfang-Ironclaw terms toward me and begin reading. Cassius watches me in silence for a long moment.

"You've done well for yourself," he says finally. "I heard you're handling most of Silverfang's diplomatic portfolio now."

"I do my part."

"More than your part, from what I understand." He leans back in his chair. "You always were sharper than people gave you credit for."

I don't respond. I keep reading.

"This contracted arrangement," he continues. "With the Duskhollow wolf. That's purely political, I assume."

My eyes don't leave the document. "Is there a clause you'd like to address?"

"Charli." His voice drops. Becomes something quieter. More intimate. "You don't need to maintain that arrangement. Whatever resources Duskhollow needs, Ironclaw can provide. You don't have to tie yourself to a weak wolf from a dying pack out of—what? Obligation? Pity?"

I set down the document. Look at him directly.

"Paragraph seven," I say. "River access during migration season. Your pack's current terms are unsustainable for Silverfang's northern border. I'd like to propose an amendment."

Cassius stares at me. Something flickers across his face—surprise, irritation, something else I can't name.

Then his jaw tightens.

His aura shifts. The air in the small room grows heavier, denser, pressing against my skin like physical weight. My wolf registers it immediately—Alpha command, dominance pressure, the kind of aura that demands submission on a biological level.

"I'm trying," he says, his voice low and edged with Alpha tone, "to have a conversation with you."

My body responds before my mind can override it. A flinch. Small. Involuntary. The kind of reflex that comes from ten years of being wolfless and structurally vulnerable to exactly this kind of pressure.

I see the moment he registers it. The satisfaction in his eyes.

I stand. Collect my documents. My hands are steady.

"I'll have my Beta send over Silverfang's proposed amendments," I say. "We can address them at the next scheduled session."

I walk to the door.

"Charli—"

I don't stop. I open the door and step into the hallway and close it behind me with a soft, final click.

The air out here is cooler. Easier to breathe.

Ten feet down the hall, leaning against the wall with a Silverfang supply manifest open in his hands, is Wyatt.

He looks up when I approach. His expression is mild. Curious.

"Finished early?" he says.

I cross the distance between us. Take the manifest out of his hands without a word.

His scent—cedar and rain—is everywhere. On the wall. On the manifest. On me.

I keep walking.

Behind me, I hear him fall into step.

Neither of us speaks.

But when we reach the main hall, his hand brushes the small of my back—just once, just barely—and my wolf, awake and paying attention, leans into the touch like coming home.
