The nursery door was already open when I reached it. That should have been my first warning—Hugo always insisted on keeping it closed to preserve the temperature for Daisy's delicate skin. But my mind was on the bottle I'd just warmed downstairs, the one now clutched in my trembling hand as I stepped into the room. Quinn stood at the balcony doors. The French windows were thrown wide despite the February chill, and she held my daughter—my one-month-old baby—suspended over the railing like a rag doll. "Quinn." My voice came out strangled. The bottle slipped from my fingers, formula splashing across the hardwood. "Quinn, please." She turned. Her eyes were glassy, unfocused, her mouth twisted into something that might have been a smile or a grimace. "She won't stop crying, Aunt Violet.

Chapter 1 of After My Husband’s Niece Murdered Our Daughter, He Protected Her

"Quinn, please."

She turned. Her eyes were glassy, unfocused, her mouth twisted into something that might have been a smile or a grimace. "She won't stop crying, Aunt Violet. I just wanted her to see the stars."

There were no stars. It was three in the afternoon.

"Give her to me." I moved forward, hands outstretched, every muscle in my body screaming. "Please, just—"

Quinn's grip loosened.

I lunged. My knee—the one that never healed right from the skiing accident—buckled beneath me. I hit the floor as Daisy fell, her tiny body disappearing over the edge with a silence more terrible than any scream.

The sound that came from my throat wasn't human.

---

The hospital smelled like antiseptic and lies. Hugo's hand was an iron shackle around my wrist as the doctor approached, his face professionally blank. I already knew. I'd known the moment the paramedics had gone silent in the ambulance, the moment they'd stopped trying to resuscitate and just held her small, broken body with something like reverence.

"I'm sorry," the doctor said. "We did everything we could."

I tried to stand. Hugo's grip tightened, pulling me back into the plastic chair that squeaked obscenely against the linoleum. Across the waiting room, Quinn sat wrapped in a blanket, a nurse hovering over her with water and soft words. She was crying—pretty, delicate tears that made her look like a wounded bird.

I wanted to kill her.

"Let me go." My voice was gravel and broken glass.

"Violet." Hugo's breath was hot against my ear. "Not here."

"She murdered our daughter."

"She's sick. You heard what she said—she didn't know what she was doing."

I twisted in his grip, finally meeting his eyes. They were the same slate gray I'd fallen in love with seven years ago in a Boston coffee shop, but now they were cold, calculating. This was Hugo McDonald, tech tycoon, the man who'd built an empire on ruthless decisions. Not Hugo, my husband. Not Hugo, Daisy's father.

"Call the police," I said.

"I've called my lawyers."

Something inside me shattered then, more completely than when Daisy had hit the ground.

---

A week later, I sat across from District Attorney Morrison in a coffee shop three blocks from the courthouse. I'd chosen a public place deliberately—Hugo couldn't control me here, couldn't silence me with his money and his lawyers and his cold, implacable will.

"Mrs. McDonald," Morrison said carefully, "these are serious allegations. If what you're saying is true—"

"It's true."

"Then we need evidence. Witnesses. A formal statement."

I slid the folder across the table. Inside were photos I'd taken of the nursery, the open balcony doors, the railing. My written account of what I'd seen. "Everything you need."

His phone buzzed. He glanced at it, and something shifted in his expression—a subtle closing off, like a door swinging shut. "I'll need to review this with my team."

He wouldn't. I could see it in the way he was already standing, already backing away. Hugo had gotten to him. Hugo got to everyone.

I made it home before the sun set. The estate loomed against the darkening sky, all glass and steel and sharp edges. Hugo was waiting in the foyer, still in his suit from whatever board meeting he'd dominated that day.

"We need to talk," he said.

He didn't take me to his study. He took me to the kitchen, past the gleaming counters and the wine fridge, to the heavy steel door I'd only seen the catering staff use. The walk-in freezer.

"Hugo, what—"

He pushed me inside. The cold hit like a physical blow, stealing my breath. The door sealed shut with a hydraulic hiss.

"I bought your parents' mortgage this morning." His voice came through the intercom, tinny and distorted. "Did you know they're six months behind? The bank was ready to foreclose."

I pressed my hands against the glass window, already feeling the ice forming on my fingertips. "You bastard."

"Sign the NDA, Violet. Agree to the settlement. Forgive Quinn publicly, or I'll make sure your mother and father spend their retirement in a homeless shelter."

A stack of papers appeared in the small pass-through slot. A pen rolled after them, clattering against the metal.

My teeth were chattering. My knee throbbed where I'd hit the nursery floor, the pain sharp and accusing. Through the frosted glass, Hugo's silhouette was perfectly still, perfectly patient.

He would wait. He would wait until I froze to death if that's what it took.

I picked up the pen. My fingers were already numb, making my signature illegible—a scrawl that looked nothing like my name. But it was enough.

The door opened. Hugo caught me as I stumbled out, his hands warm against my frozen skin. For a moment, I almost believed he cared.

Then he handed the papers to his lawyer, who'd been waiting in the hallway the entire time, and walked away without looking back.

Betrayed Mate: Choosing True Love Path
Betrayed Mate: Choosing True Love Path
My hands trembled as I stood at the edge of the ceremonial circle, watching the other seniors of our pack take their turns. The Coming of Age Ceremony was everything in werewolf society—the moment when our abilities would be fully tested, our ranks determined, our futures set. The scent of pine needles and burning sage filled the night air, and the full moon hung heavy above us, its silver light bathing the clearing in an ethereal glow. Ryan stood across the circle, his dark hair gleaming under the moonlight, those green eyes finding mine with the same reassurance they'd offered since we were pups. My heart fluttered as it always did when he looked at me. We'd been raised with the understanding that we were destined mates—our families had planned it, the pack expected it, and I had built my entire future around it. "Sophia Williams," Elder Marcus called, his Alpha voice resonating through the clearing. I stepped forward, my white ceremonial dress billowing around my ankles. Inside me, my wolf—Sarah—stirred anxiously. *We should show our full strength*, she whispered in my mind.

He Married Me Just for Money
“Don’t stop,” she whispered. “She won’t come up.” I did. I stopped breathing. Thinking. Existing. The voice came from inside my bedroom—our bedroom. My sanctuary. I stood frozen in the hallway, dinner still warm downstairs, candles flickering in a room that no longer mattered. The scent of truffle butter still clung to my sleeves. Through the door—left carelessly ajar—I saw enough. A woman with auburn hair and wine-colored nails was curled into my husband's side, her lipstick smeared across his throat like a bruise. Her fingers skimmed down his back, possessive, practiced. Oliver moaned softly. A sound I hadn’t heard in months. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I turned. Through the adjoining bathroom, I slipped into the walk-in closet, hiding behind the luxury he insisted I needed. Dresses lined in neat rows. Shoes in pyramids. A fortress of silk and leather and betrayal. I sat down, gripping the hem of my dress, listening. “I don’t know why you’re still stalling,” Lily said, her voice languid and confident. “She’s not stupid, Oliver. She’s suspicious. You said she keeps asking questions.” He sighed. “Let her ask. She won’t do anything. Not until it’s too late.” A beat. “She’s planning something tonight,” he added, almost amused. “Made some kind of fancy dinner. Probably filet again. It’s sweet, in a tragic way.” Lily giggled. “You think she’s figured out we’ve been using her?” “Scarlett sees what she wants to see. She’s desperate. That’s what makes it easy.” There was movement on the bed. Sheets shifting. “She still has no idea about the inheritance?” Lily murmured. “None,” he said. “Her father’s trust releases next month. Once the money hits the accounts, I’ll serve the papers. I’ve already started moving things offshore.” My throat closed. I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted blood. So this was what I got from our five-year marriage.
