Chapter 1 of After My Husband Exposed Me, They Revealed I Was Crimson Veil

The gray coat still smelled like the cedar closet where I kept it, folded at the bottom, underneath sweaters I never wore. I put it on at six in the morning while the apartment was dark and quiet, the kind of quiet that meant Ian had already gone. His side of the bed was cold. A text sat lit up on my phone screen: *Early media prep at the venue. Don't wait up last night, sorry babe.* I hadn't waited up. I never did anymore.

In the bathroom, his wedding ring sat on the counter next to the soap dish, a small gold circle catching the light. He took it off sometimes, he said, when his hands swelled from the cold. I looked at it for three full seconds. Then I picked up my bag, tucked a single white chrysanthemum deeper inside it, wrapped in a paper towel so the petals wouldn't bruise, and left without touching the ring at all.

The cab ride to Arlington took twenty-five minutes. I spent it with my hands folded in my lap, watching the Potomac slide by gray and flat under a sky that couldn't decide if it wanted to rain. Ten years. Ten years since Crimson Veil supposedly died in a collapsed operation nobody was allowed to talk about, and every year they threw her a bigger funeral than the one before. This one had a stage. Screens. A twenty-one gun salute scheduled for eleven a.m. I'd read about it in the paper like anyone else would.

I took a seat near the back of the civilian section, in a row full of strangers in dark coats, and folded my hands the way I always did—still, controlled, unremarkable. Nobody looked at me twice. Nobody ever did. That was the entire design of the last decade of my life.

What I didn't know, what I couldn't have known sitting there with my flower hidden in my bag, was that four hundred feet away, behind a black curtain backstage, my husband was straightening his tie in a mirror while another woman's hands smoothed the fabric at his collar.

"You look good," Dalia said, close to his ear. Close enough that her lipstick nearly grazed his jaw. "Grief looks good on you, Ian. Rehearse the pause again. Right after 'painful truth.' Let it sit."

He practiced it in the mirror—chin down, eyes glassy, a slow exhale. "For the sake of the heroes we honor today," he murmured, then looked at his reflection like he was auditioning for something. He was. He'd been auditioning our entire marriage.

On the folding table beside him, a laptop sat open, its screen glowing with an image already queued into the venue's AV system. A woman in a gray coat. A man beside her, face turned, blurred at the edges by distance and bad light. The kind of photo that looked damning if you didn't know it had been staged, cropped, doctored by someone paid to make a lie look like truth.

"Phone charged?" Ian asked, checking his watch.

"Fully." Dalia smiled and pressed a kiss to his jaw, right where her hand had just smoothed his collar. "I'll be ready the second it goes up." She turned and slipped through the curtain, disappearing into the crowd to take her seat like any other mourner.

I didn't see any of that. I only knew what I felt sitting in my folding chair as the ceremony opened with full military honors—the flag snapping in the wind, the rifles cracking their salute, a bugler somewhere playing notes that still made something in my chest go tight after all these years. When the video montage began, faces blurred and voices distorted beyond recognition, I watched myself flicker across the screen in fragments I alone could identify. A silhouette running through smoke. A hand signal only three living people would understand. My fingers tightened around the strap of my bag, just slightly, just enough that no one beside me would notice.

I breathed through it. I always did.

Then Ian walked to the podium.

I recognized the shift before he even opened his mouth—that practiced tilt of the head, the softening around his eyes that he used on camera when he wanted an audience to feel something specific. He'd used it on me once, years ago, on a park bench in the rain, and I'd fallen for it completely.

"I need to address a painful truth," he said, voice trembling in a way I now understood was rehearsed, "for the sake of the heroes we honor today."

He lifted a hand. Somewhere off to the side, a technician's fingers moved across a keyboard.

The screens changed.

A photograph, blown up ten feet tall, bloomed across every surface in the venue. Me. My gray coat. A man beside me, face angled away, caught in the gray light before dawn at a cemetery I visited once a year, alone, for a woman the world had already forgotten.

"My wife," Ian said, and his voice cracked exactly where he'd practiced it cracking, "has been meeting another man. In secret. At the graves of fallen soldiers. While the nation mourns Crimson Veil, my wife has been desecrating that memory with her infidelity."

The gasp that swept the crowd hit me like a physical thing, a wave of breath and sound rolling backward through the rows until every camera, every head, every eye in that place turned and found me sitting perfectly still in my folding chair, a chrysanthemum wilting quietly in the bag on my lap.
