After His Mistress Murdered Our Daughter, My Husband Begged Me Back

Grayson found Renata in the hospital cafeteria.

She sat by the window with a cup of coffee she hadn't touched. Her hands were folded on the table. When she looked up and saw him, her face shifted into something soft and concerned.

"Grayson," she said quietly. "How is she?"

He pulled out the chair across from her and sat. He didn't answer right away. Just looked at her face. The face he'd looked at across a hundred dinner tables. The face that had always seemed so easy to read.

"I went through the records," he said.

Renata's expression didn't change. "What records?"

"Everything. The hospital bills. The wages. The calls." His voice was flat. Empty. "I saw what I did. What I didn't do."

She reached across the table. Her fingers brushed his wrist. "Grayson, you couldn't have known. You were overseas. Elena—she never told you how bad it was."

"She called me seventeen times."

"I know." Renata's voice dropped lower. Gentle. "But you know how she is. She's proud. She doesn't ask for help even when she needs it. That's not your fault."

Grayson stared at the table. At the coffee cup. At nothing.

"Laylah died because I wasn't there," he said.

Renata shook her head. "Laylah died because she was sick. You can't blame yourself for—"

"Two hundred thousand dollars," Grayson interrupted. "That's what the treatment cost. I spent more than that on your training facility."

Renata went still. Just for a second. Then she squeezed his wrist.

"You were investing in my career. That's different. Elena could have asked. She could have—"

"She did ask."

Silence.

Renata pulled her hand back slowly. She picked up her coffee cup. Set it down again without drinking.

"She was stubborn," Renata said finally. "You know that. After what happened at the gala, after the parking garage incident—she shut everyone out. Even you."

Grayson's head came up.

"What did you say?"

Renata blinked. "The gala. When she had that episode and—"

"No. After that."

She hesitated. Just a fraction of a second. "The parking garage?"

"I never told you about that."

Renata's face stayed calm. Too calm. "Yes, you did. You must have. Or maybe Elena mentioned it when—"

"Elena hasn't spoken to you in four years." Grayson's voice was very quiet now. "And I never told you. I didn't know about it until yesterday when I read the police report."

Renata set the coffee cup down carefully. "Grayson, I think you're confused. You're exhausted. You've been sitting in that waiting room for days and—"

"How did you know?"

She looked at him. Her eyes were steady. But something behind them had shifted.

"I don't know what you want me to say."

Grayson stood. The chair scraped against the linoleum.

"I want you to tell me the truth."

Renata stood too. She smoothed her jacket. When she spoke, her voice had lost its softness.

"The truth is your wife was a bitter, jealous woman who couldn't handle the fact that you had a life outside of her. She made herself a victim. She's still doing it. And you're falling for it."

Grayson stared at her.

Then he turned and walked out.

---

He made the first call from his car.

The voice on the other end was clipped and professional. "Commander Walker. It's been a while."

"I need a full workup," Grayson said. "Financial records, communications, travel logs. Everything."

"On who?"

"Renata Ortiz."

A pause. "Your protégé?"

"Yes."

"Time frame?"

"Four years. I want to know everywhere she went, everyone she paid, every email she sent."

Another pause. Longer this time. "Grayson, if this is personal—"

"It's personal," Grayson said. "Do it anyway."

The line went quiet. Then: "I'll have something in forty-eight hours."

---

The file arrived in thirty-six.

Grayson opened it alone in his apartment. The same apartment where he used to have dinner with Renata. Where she used to sit on the couch and talk about her training schedule and her competition results and how grateful she was for everything he'd done.

He read for three hours without stopping.

The payments to the two men arrested for assault. Routed through a shell account, but traceable. The dates matched.

The wire transfer to Victor Hale. Five thousand dollars. Sent two days before Laylah's surgery.

The private investigator. Monthly retainer. Instructions to monitor Elena's movements, her work schedule, her hospital visits.

Grayson closed the file.

He sat in the dark and didn't move for a long time.

---

Victor Hale lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Tacoma.

Grayson didn't go himself. He sent two officers from the Judge Advocate General's Corps. They came back with a signed confession.

Grayson read it at his kitchen table. The words were simple. Factual.

Mr. Hale confirmed he received five thousand dollars from an account later traced to Ms. Renata Ortiz. In exchange, he triggered a power outage in Operating Room 3 at County General Hospital on the night of March 14th. The outage lasted ninety seconds. He was instructed to ensure it occurred during a specific surgical procedure. Patient name: Laylah Marie Walker.

Grayson read it three times.

Then he set it face-down on the table.

He stared at the blank back of the paper for a long time. His hands were flat on the table. His breathing was slow and even.

Then he stood, walked to the bathroom, and vomited until there was nothing left.
