His Unwanted Wife, The Hidden Genius Architect

Sienna Ashford POV:

The world was a muffled roar, a symphony of destruction playing out around the bubble of my fading consciousness. My leg was a distant epicenter of pain, a fire I could no longer feel with any real clarity.

Through the ringing in my ears, their voices cut through.

"Mia, are you okay? Talk to me!" Ethan's voice, tight with panic, was right there. So close.

"Ethan, I was so scared…" Mia's reply was a weak, theatrical sob. "My leg… I think it's broken."

I heard him murmur something soothing, his tone impossibly gentle. I could picture his face, the harsh lines softened with a concern he never showed me. He was moving, his footsteps careful but urgent.

He was carrying her out.

Their path took them right past the slab of concrete that was crushing my leg. So close I could smell the faint, cloying scent of her vanilla perfume mixed with the dust.

My heart didn't break. It was already a pile of dust at the bottom of my chest. But survival… survival was a different instinct.

My fingers twitched. My purse. It had been ripped from my shoulder, but it had fallen near my hand. My phone.

With the last dregs of my strength, I fumbled inside the leather, my bloody fingers searching for the smooth, cool rectangle. I found it.

The screen was a spiderweb of cracks, but it lit up. A miracle.

My thumb, clumsy and slick with blood, found the first icon without thinking. Muscle memory. Ethan's face. Speed dial. I pressed it, the cracked glass registering the touch through the grime.

Let him answer. Please, just answer.

A few feet away, I heard the vibration. A muffled buzz from his pocket.

He grunted in annoyance.

"Ethan, your phone," Mia's voice was "helpful," "considerate." "Maybe it's important news about the rescue."

I heard him shifting her weight. "It can wait," he muttered. But then there was a rustle of fabric. He was getting it.

Hope, sharp and painful, pierced through the fog.

I waited. The call was still connecting. Then, through the dust, I saw the faint glow of his phone screen. My name. "Sienna." It was right there.

He stared at it for a beat. A flicker of something crossed his face. Not concern. Annoyance. Pure, unadulterated irritation.

In his mind, I was fine. I was somewhere safe, calling to demand why he hadn't come for me first. The audacity. His arrogant mind couldn't conceive of any other reality. He couldn't imagine his capable, self-sufficient wife was actually in peril.

He pressed the red icon.

On my shattered screen, the words "Call Ended" appeared. Cold. Final.

A laugh tried to bubble up, but it turned into a choked sob.

He took another step, needing to get around a pile of fallen bricks to move faster. He put his foot on a large, loose piece of rubble, using it as a stepping stone.

He didn't see that the brick was a linchpin. The one piece holding a precarious balance of debris above my head.

The brick shifted.

Above me, a low twang echoed, and a piece of exposed rebar, thick as my thumb, slid down through the concrete. It dropped a good six inches, the movement sudden and violent.

The cold, rusty tip of the metal scraped against the side of my neck, a phantom kiss of death, before stopping less than an inch from my throat.

I froze. I didn't even breathe. The metallic scent of rust filled my nostrils. One more tremor, one wrong move, and it would be over.

And I watched him. I watched my husband, the man who had just unknowingly almost killed me, walk away.

He adjusted Mia in his arms. And in that moment, as she was jostled, Mia looked over his shoulder. Her eyes, filled not with pain but with something sharp and intelligent, found mine through the gap in the rubble.

She saw me. She saw the rebar at my throat. She saw my terror.

And she smiled.

It wasn't a big smile. It was a small, secret, triumphant curve of her lips. A smile that said, I win. You lose. He's mine.

It was the smile of a predator.

Every certainty I had built my life on cracked wide open. This wasn't just neglect. This wasn't an accident. This was a game. And I had been the pawn.

Just then, a new sound cut through the chaos. A high-pitched, insistent beeping.

"Over here! I've got a life-sign reading! It's strong! Get over here, now!" a man shouted.

A team of firefighters in heavy gear rushed past Ethan, their movements professional and urgent. They were heading directly for me.

Ethan paused. He turned his head, a flicker of confusion on his face as he watched them run toward the pile of rubble he'd just abandoned. But Mia whimpered in his arms, and his attention snapped back to her. The hospital. He had to get her to the hospital.

He turned his back on the rescue that was meant for me and disappeared into the smoke.

Strangers were fighting to save my life. My husband had left me to die.

I looked down at my phone. His face was still on the screen. With a trembling thumb, I tapped into his contact card. The options appeared: Call, Message, Edit, Delete.

My finger hovered over the last word.

I pressed it.

A confirmation box popped up. "Delete Contact?"

Yes.

The phone slipped from my grasp, the cracked screen finally going dark.

A single tear traced a path through the grime on my cheek as my world, at last, faded to black.
