Chapter 1 of His Unwanted Wife: The Hidden Genius Architect

The corridor outside the presidential suite on the top floor of the St. Regis was silent, heavy with the subtle scent of fresh-cut lilies and polished mahogany.

Stella Pacheco stood before the heavy double doors, her fingertips numb from cold and exhaustion. Her eyes were bloodshot—the result of thirty consecutive hours spent bent over her drafting board to finish a client's blueprints before deadline.

In her trembling hands, she held a clear-topped bakery box containing a Black Forest cake she had spent four hours baking that afternoon. Dark chocolate curls and sugar-dusted roses rested atop flawless cream.

She tapped her phone screen, the bright blue light stinging her tired eyes. Her chat history with her best friend, Melanie, lingered from half an hour ago.

Melanie: "Are you out of your mind, Stella? It's YOUR birthday AND your anniversary! Instead of him taking you out, you pulled a 30-hour shift and then spent four hours slaving over a stove to bake your own cake? Julian hasn't made a single gesture—he probably forgot your birthday again, just like he did on your wedding day last year! Why are you still bending over backward for a man who treats you like you're invisible?"

Stella's thumbs hovered over the keyboard before typing a frail, familiar defense:

"He's just under immense pressure at work, Mel. You don't see how good he can be when it's just the two of us."

She pressed send, the lie tasting bitter before she even put the phone away. Above Melanie's chat, her own unread message to her husband, Julian Carlisle, lingered unanswered from an hour ago:

"Is your meeting finished? I miss you."

Swallow it down, she told herself, forcing a slow, quiet breath. He's just busy.

She lifted her hand to knock, but paused. The heavy mahogany door was unlatched, leaving a crack no wider than a finger.

A woman's voice drifted into the quiet hallway—sweet, low, and laced with a breathless, suggestive rhythm.

"Mmm, Julian... a little lower. It's too tight... you're being too rough with me."

Stella's breath caught in her throat. Her blood ran cold. The voice belonged to her stepsister, Amber Pacheco.

Every instinct screamed at her to turn around and walk away, but her feet felt anchored to the plush carpet. Drawn by a dark, unavoidable dread, she leaned closer, peering through the narrow gap.

The suite was dimly lit by warm wall sconces. The air inside was thick with the heavy scent of Julian's preferred cigars, underlaid by a cloying, floral perfume that wasn't hers.

Her eyes adjusted to the gloom.

Julian stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, his tall, tailored frame turned toward the room. Nestled intimately against his chest was Amber. In Julian's hands glinted a delicate platinum necklace set with a teardrop diamond. His focus was absolute—gentle, precise—as he fastened the clasp behind Amber's neck.

It was a gesture of tender devotion Stella had never once received in their entire year of marriage.

Then, Amber's eyes flicked toward the crack in the door.

For a fraction of a second, her gaze locked directly onto Stella's bloodshot eyes. But there was zero guilt, zero panic. Instead, Amber's lips curved into a subtle, triumphant smile.

With deliberate, poisonous calculation, Amber didn't pull away. Instead, she arched her back closer into Julian's chest, reaching up to slowly wrap her arms around his neck, her fingers trailing casually through his dark hair, pressing herself entirely against him.

"Julian," Amber murmured, her eyes never breaking contact with Stella through the crack, her voice dripping with saccharine pity. "Won't Stella... be angry if she finds out? I mean, isn't today her birthday?"

She paused, letting out a soft, mocking sigh that echoed clearly in the hallway.

"She's probably slaving over her blueprints, pretending she's perfectly fine baking her own birthday cake..." Amber fingered the shimmering pendant at her collarbone, tilting her head with feigned pity. "Poor thing. You didn't even buy her a card this year, did you? I almost feel guilty for taking up all your time..."

Stella felt a rusted blade twist deep in her chest. The offhand comment cut straight to the bone. All those grueling hours at her drafting board, the four agonizing hours spent piping cream over a stove—her silent sacrifices hadn't earned a single moment of his attention. They had only made her a pathetic, embarrassing joke.

Julian didn't hesitate. His hands rested casually on Amber's waist, his response clipped, devoid of warmth or a single shred of remorse.

"She's an adult, Amber. She doesn't need me humoring her over every minor occasion," Julian said, his tone dry and dismissive. "She knows how busy I am. Don't ruin our evening talking about her."

The words stole the remaining air from Stella's lungs. It wasn't just neglect; it was absolute, chilling disdain.

The fragile threads of Stella's composure snapped completely.

Her vision blurred slightly as she stumbled backward, her shoulder striking the wall opposite the door with a dull thud.

The conversation inside cut off abruptly.

She had been discovered. But the shame was instantly incinerated by a wave of cold, crystalline fury. She looked down at the cake box in her hands—at the piped script reading Happy Birthday, Stella.

It was a pathetic monument to her own foolishness.

Without a sound, she stepped forward and slammed the bakery box against the polished mahogany door with all her strength.

The plastic shattered. Dark chocolate, whipped cream, and broken sugar roses splattered across the dark wood in a ruined, messy heap.

She didn't look back. She turned on her heel and walked briskly toward the elevators.

Behind her, the suite door yanked open.

"Stella? What is wrong with you?" Julian's voice snapped through the hallway—laced not with concern, but with sharp, arrogant annoyance.

She ignored him, throwing herself into an open elevator car and hammering the 'close door' button.

In the final second before the doors sealed, she saw them. Julian, standing in the doorway with his brow furrowed in anger. And beside him, Amber, her face alight with an undisguised smirk.

The doors closed. The elevator lurched downward.

Inside the steel enclosure, Stella stood perfectly still against the wall. Her hands were cold, but her breathing was slow and even. She pulled her phone from her pocket—the customized model Julian had given her as an engagement gift—and powered it down. The screen, displaying their wedding photograph, flickered and went dark.
