His Secret Mistress, My Silent Revenge

The laughter coming from the master bedroom wasn’t just a sound; it was a dagger twisting in my chest. Clara’s giggles were muffled, but they carried a sharpness that sliced through the thin walls. Nathan’s voice followed, low and warm, the same tone he used to save for me.

I sat on the edge of the guest room bed, gripping the sheets to keep my hands from shaking. How did it come to this? Just yesterday, that room had been mine. The life I’d built was unraveling, thread by thread, and no one—not even the man who once vowed to love me—seemed to care.

The house I’d poured my soul into had become a stranger’s playground. Clara’s perfume lingered in the hallways, her laughter filled the silence, and her belongings cluttered the spaces I used to call my own. Even Margaret had found her new favorite in Clara, doting on her as if she hadn’t spent years undermining my every effort to fit into this family.

I needed to leave.

I didn’t bother checking my reflection or grabbing a bag. I slipped on my coat, shoved my feet into boots, and walked out the door. The morning air bit at my skin, but it was nothing compared to the frost that had settled in my heart.

Inside the sleek office of one of the companies I frequently worked with, the familiar hum of productivity surrounded me. I made my way to the glass-walled office at the end of the hall.

“Alina!” Dominic stood as I entered, his easy smile making the tightness in my chest loosen just a little.

“Dominic,” I greeted, managing a small smile. He’d always been kind, professional, and... attentive. More than once, I’d noticed the way his gaze lingered just a second too long, but I’d never let myself dwell on it. After all, I was married, and he was a bachelor who clearly liked me more than he should.

We sat and talked, mostly about business at first. But as the conversation shifted, so did the tone.

“You look tired,” he said gently, his green eyes searching mine. “Is everything okay?”

The concern in his voice almost undid me. For years, I’d brushed off his questions, insisting I was fine even when I wasn’t. But now, with everything falling apart, I couldn’t keep up the facade.

I let out a bitter laugh. “I’m not sure I even know what ‘okay’ feels like anymore.”

He leaned forward, resting his arms on his desk. “It’s Nathan, isn’t it? I never wanted to say anything, Alina, but... I’ve seen the way he treats you. And that woman—Clara—I assumed she was just a friend, but now...”

I looked away, ashamed and embarrassed. “You knew?”

Dominic hesitated. “I suspected. The signs were there, but I didn’t think it was my place to say anything. I figured if you needed help, you’d tell me.”

His words stung, not because they were cruel, but because they were true. The signs had been there all along. The late nights, the secretive phone calls, the sudden shift in his demeanor. I’d ignored them, clinging to the hope that things would get better.

“And Margaret?” I asked, my voice quieter now. “Did you see that too?”

He nodded grimly. “She’s never hidden her feelings about you. I don’t know how you’ve put up with it all these years, especially with Nathan siding with her most of the time.”

Hearing it out loud felt like a slap in the face. I’d spent so much time justifying Nathan’s behavior, convincing myself that he’d change, that he’d finally stand up for me. But he never had.

“What about you?” I asked, changing the subject before I could fall apart. “You’re always so put together. No family drama, no scandals... what’s your secret?”

Dominic chuckled, the sound warm and genuine. “No secret. Just a lot of boundaries and the good sense to stay single.”

I smiled faintly, appreciating his attempt to lighten the mood. But his words lingered. Boundaries. Something I’d never had in my marriage.

He leaned back in his chair, his expression turning serious again. “Alina, I know it’s not my place, but... you deserve better than this. You’ve always deserved better. If there’s ever a way I can help—”

I cut him off, shaking my head. “You’ve already done more than you know, Dominic. You’ve been there when no one else was, even when I didn’t realize it.”

He looked at me for a long moment, his gaze steady and unwavering. “You’re stronger than you think, Alina. Don’t forget that.”

As I left his office, his words echoed in my mind. I replayed every moment we’d shared over the years—the way he’d quietly supported me through Margaret’s barbs, how he’d been a steady presence during Nathan’s worst moments.

I’d kept my distance because I was married, because I didn’t want to complicate things. But now, with my marriage in ruins, I couldn’t ignore the truth any longer.

By the time I got home, the house was silent. Nathan and Clara were nowhere to be seen, and Margaret was likely sulking in her room. I sat on the edge of the guest bed, staring at my phone, my heart pounding in my chest.

For years, I’d let fear and loyalty hold me back. But not anymore.

I dialed Dominic’s number, my fingers trembling slightly. He answered on the second ring.

“Alina?” His voice was calm, steady, and somehow exactly what I needed.

I took a deep breath, my lips curving into a small, determined smile. “Is the offer for a date still up?”

There was silence on the other end.

Finally, he spoke, his voice quieter than before. “You’re serious?”

“Would I call if I wasn’t?” I shot back, my tone sharper than I intended. But the truth was, I wasn’t entirely sure myself.

My world had crumbled, and here I was.

His laugh was almost disbelieving. “I’ve waited a long time to hear you say that.”
