His Mistress Took My Bedroom, So I Reclaimed the House

The private elevator opened at nine the next morning.

Evan walked into my penthouse without waiting to be invited. Vanessa followed him in a cream trench coat that looked suspiciously like one I had left in the downstairs closet.

"Are you finished with this tantrum?" he demanded.

I remained at the dining table. A mug of black coffee sat beside a manila folder.

"Divorce is a legal process," I said. "Not a tantrum."

"You emptied the house over a nightgown."

"I removed my property from my property."

Vanessa hovered behind his shoulder. "I told him I shouldn't have worn it. I'm sorry you felt threatened."

I looked at her. "I don't feel threatened by you."

Her mouth tightened.

Evan stepped farther into the room. "The Children's Foundation Gala is tonight. The press will be there. We need to appear together."

"No."

His brow furrowed as if the word itself offended him. "You are co-chair."

"I resigned yesterday."

"You cannot resign forty-eight hours before a gala."

"I did it in six minutes."

He ignored that. "Fine. We will address the foundation later. I need the emerald."

I glanced at my left hand.

"My wedding ring?"

"Vanessa's dress is forest green. Your ring matches it perfectly."

For a moment, I simply stared at him.

He mistook my silence for confusion and continued.

"It's a major donor event. The photographers will be close. She needs one strong piece of jewelry."

"You want your mistress to wear my wedding ring to a charity gala."

"She is not my mistress."

Vanessa lowered her gaze with a perfect little sigh. "I told him I could wear nothing. I don't want to upset you."

I nearly admired the performance.

Evan pointed at my hand. "It's just jewelry, Natalie."

"Just jewelry."

I turned the emerald slowly on my finger.

"I wore this when Apex had four hundred dollars left in the operating account," I said. "I wore it when we ate instant noodles for a week because you refused to pull money out of payroll. I wore it when I sold my mother's apartment to keep your company alive."

His eyes hardened. "I paid you back."

"You bought things. That is not the same as paying someone back."

"I am not doing this again."

"Neither am I."

I pulled the ring off.

Evan held out his palm.

I tossed it toward Vanessa instead.

She barely caught it.

"Keep it," I said.

Her eyes widened. "You're serious?"

"Very."

Evan lowered his hand. "What is wrong with you?"

"Nothing."

I stood and pushed my chair in.

"She wanted my bedroom, my nightgown, and my husband. The ring completes the set."

Vanessa's face colored. "That is disgusting."

"Then take it off."

She closed her fingers around the emerald.

Evan rubbed both hands over his face. "Just be ready by six. Marcus can drive you."

"Marcus works for me."

"Then send another car."

"I am not attending."

"You cannot skip the gala while we are dealing with this divorce stunt."

I tapped the folder.

His attention finally dropped to it.

"What is that?"

"Open it."

"If this is another list of rules for the house—"

"It isn't."

He snatched the folder and flipped it open.

The first page stopped him.

His entire body went still.

Vanessa leaned toward him. "What does it say?"

He ignored her.

I watched his eyes move across the caption, the filing instructions, the asset-preservation notice, and my signature.

"What is this?" he asked.

"Read it."

His throat worked.

"Petition for Dissolution of Marriage."

Vanessa stepped back.

Evan looked at me as if the room had shifted under his feet. "You filed for divorce?"

"My attorney files at noon."

"Over Vanessa staying in the house?"

"No."

"Then over what?"

"The last seven years."

His face changed. Not grief.

Calculation.

"The IPO roadshow starts next month," he said. "Do you understand what a public divorce will do to investor confidence?"

There it was.

Not our vows. Not our marriage.

The stock price.

"I do."

"You cannot destabilize Apex because you're jealous."

"I am not destabilizing Apex."

"Then delay the filing."

"No."

He dropped the folder on the table. Pages slipped sideways.

"This is insane. We are married. People fight. People have guests. You don't blow up a life because someone borrowed a nightgown."

"You gave my bedroom to another woman."

"For three nights."

"You told her to wear the anniversary gift you bought me."

"She needed something to sleep in."

"You asked me to lend her my wedding ring."

His jaw flexed.

"Do you hear yourself yet?" I asked.

He crossed the room in two strides and grabbed my elbow.

"You are not filing this today."

His grip was hard enough to hurt.

I looked down at his fingers.

"Take your hand off me."

"Natalie—"

"Now."

Something in my voice reached him.

He released me.

I stepped back and rubbed my arm.

"I sold my mother's apartment to save your company," I said quietly. "I will not sell my dignity to save your image."

Vanessa moved closer to him. "Evan, maybe we should go."

He stared at me. "If you do this, I will fight you for everything."

"You can try."

"The house."

"Mine."

"The shares."

"Documented."

"The penthouse."

"Mine."

His confidence weakened with each answer.

"I have attorneys too," he said.

"Good. Give them my attorney's number."

I pressed the elevator button.

The doors opened.

Vanessa slipped inside first, still clutching my emerald.

Evan remained in the foyer.

"You will regret this."

"The regret already happened."

He stepped backward into the elevator.

His phone rang just as the doors began closing.

The caller ID lit the screen in his hand.

HARBOR FERTILITY CENTER.

Evan's expression changed so quickly I almost missed it.

Fear.

He turned the screen away from me.

The elevator doors closed.

I stood there for several seconds, staring at my own reflection in the brushed steel.

We had used Harbor Fertility Center three years earlier.

After two failed pregnancies, we had created and frozen four embryos.

Only Evan and I were authorized to make decisions about them.

I picked up my phone and called my attorney.

"Add Harbor Fertility Center to the preservation notice," I said the second she answered.

"Why?"

"Because Evan just got a call from them."

I looked at the closed elevator doors.

"And I no longer trust him with anything that carries my name."
