Chapter 1 of His Mistress Smashed My Daughter’s Ashes

The taxi driver kept glancing at me in the rearview mirror, at the way I gripped the door handle every time a contraction rolled through me like a wave dragging the ocean floor out from under my feet. It was 2:14 a.m. when he pulled up under the emergency awning at Manhattan Presbyterian, and I paid him with a hand that wouldn't stop shaking, then walked myself through the sliding doors because there was no one else to walk me.

I was thirty-four weeks. My coat was soaked through with rain and something else I didn't want to name yet, and the fluorescent light of the lobby felt like it was pressing down on my skull. A nurse got me into a wheelchair. I remember thinking, distantly, that I should call Caspian. I remember thinking he already knew.

He arrived nine minutes later. I know because I watched the clock on the wall the entire time I waited for someone to take my vitals, and when the doors burst open, it wasn't for me.

Caspian Harrison came through first, tall and immaculate even at that hour, his hand cupped under the elbow of a woman I recognized instantly — Lilith Flores, full-term, screaming through a contraction with the kind of theatrical volume that made three orderlies turn their heads. Behind them swept Angelina Harrison, my mother-in-law, in a coat that probably cost more than the hospital wing, her face arranged into the particular stillness she wore whenever she wanted people to know she was above panicking.

No one panicked over me.

I heard Caspian's voice at the nursing station, low but carrying, the way voices carry when a man is used to never being told no. "I want Dr. Feldman. I want the head of obstetrics, not a resident. I want anesthesiology on call right now, and get the neonatal specialist up here before she's fully dilated."

"Sir, there's another patient—"

"I'm aware there's another patient." He didn't even look toward my gurney. "This is Lilith Flores. She goes to the private suite on four."

A nurse wheeled me in the opposite direction, toward a standard room with beige walls and a curtain that didn't fully close. A second-year resident introduced himself. He looked younger than me. His hands were shaking almost as much as mine.

I don't remember most of what came after. I remember the blood pressure monitor screaming a number that made the resident's face go pale, and I remember calling for someone, anyone, and getting one nurse who kept apologizing while she searched for a vein. I remember the crash cart arriving too slow, wheels catching on the doorframe. I remember delivering a baby I never saw the face of before they took it — before they took her, though I wouldn't learn that word for hours — straight to the NICU.

When I woke, eleven hours had passed. My wrist had bruised dark purple around the IV site, a bruise I would trace with my thumb for months afterward without ever telling anyone why. A nurse told me, gently, that Ms. Flores had delivered a healthy baby down the hall, in a suite that apparently smelled like a florist's shop.

Caspian had not come to see me. Not once.

That evening, Angelina paused in my doorway on her way to the nursery. She didn't come in. She spoke to the nurse beside her, but she made sure her voice reached me. "The girl couldn't even carry it to term properly," she said, and then she was gone, her heels clicking down the hall toward Lilith's roses.

I turned my face to the window. Somewhere below, Manhattan was still lit up, indifferent, glittering. I touched my bruised wrist and said nothing, because there was nothing left in me that wanted to be understood by these people. Something behind my ribs simply closed, quietly, like a door pulled shut in another room.

The next day, Caspian appeared in my doorway for the first time. He didn't sit. He didn't come closer than the threshold.

"Have you seen her?" I asked. "Our daughter. In the NICU."

"Fairness means neither of you gets special treatment, Saoirse." His tone was the same one he used in board meetings — final, absolute, allowing no rebuttal. "Lilith doesn't have a family fortune to fall back on if something goes wrong. You do. Focus on your own recovery instead of competing for attention."

"I wasn't competing," I said. "I was asking about my child."

He was already turning away. "I'll check in tomorrow."

He didn't come in. He never crossed that threshold at all. I lay there listening to his footsteps recede down the hallway, toward the suite full of flowers, and I understood — with a clarity that felt almost peaceful — that I had already lost something I would spend the rest of my life trying to name.
