His Betrayal, My Reborn Vengeance

Alexa Lane POV

Bailee continued her performance, meticulously crafting her victim narrative. She sighed dramatically, her gaze fixed on Asher, as if seeking his sympathy. "It's hard, you know," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "Always feeling like... like a stand-in, an echo." She squeezed his arm, a delicate, almost imperceptible tremor in her hand. Her eyes darted to me, then quickly away, ensuring I caught her pitiful act.

Inside, a wave of profound weariness washed over me. Her predictability was exhausting. I had seen this act countless times in my past life. It was a well-rehearsed script, designed to elicit pity from Asher and provoke a furious reaction from me, thus making her appear even more vulnerable. This entire dynamic felt so childish, so transparent, yet it had consumed my first life.

I silently questioned their twisted affection. Asher enjoyed controlling women, and Bailee craved security and status. Their relationship was a transactional dance of manipulation and dependency. Why did they need me, the "original," to complete their toxic tableau? My presence seemed to validate their bizarre power games.

I maintained my serene expression, tilting my head slightly as if genuinely perplexed. "A stand-in?," I repeated, my voice light and inquisitive, feigning complete ignorance. "What exactly does a 'stand-in' mean in this context, Bailee?" I acted as if I had genuinely misunderstood, purposefully misinterpreting her emotional plea.

I continued, my brow subtly furrowed in what appeared to be genuine concern. "Are you an actress, perhaps? Like a stunt double? That must be such challenging work, very physically demanding." I offered an innocent, almost naive interpretation, effectively deflating her carefully constructed pathos. The implication was clear: I was too sophisticated, too far removed from her world, to understand her petty grievances.

Bailee's expression faltered, her carefully crafted vulnerability cracking. Her eyes, which had been glistening with fabricated tears, blinked rapidly in confusion. My deliberate misinterpretation clearly threw her off balance, stripping her performance of its intended emotional impact. She looked utterly bewildered, her script suddenly useless.

I stepped closer to her, my hand gently touching her arm, a gesture of concern that was entirely performative. "Oh, Bailee, you look quite pale," I said, my voice rich with empathy. "Are you feeling unwell? Asher, you should really take better care of your girlfriend. She looks rather fragile." My words were a subtle jab at Asher, implying his negligence, while simultaneously reinforcing my image as a kind, compassionate woman.

I turned to Asher, my gaze firm but not accusatory. "Asher," I began, my tone gentle, "perhaps you should find Bailee a suitable acting role. Something that truly showcases her talent, rather than… whatever this is."

Asher' s jaw tightened. He looked visibly uncomfortable, almost stifled by my well-meaning advice. He wanted me to be jealous, to fight for him, not to play the generous patron. My suggestion, while outwardly kind, implied a detachment that he found deeply frustrating. His face showed a clear struggle between annoyance and the need to maintain his image in front of me.

He cleared his throat, a forced, strained sound. "Yes, Alexa, of course. I'll… I'll look into it." His agreement was reluctant, his voice laced with a strained politeness. He couldn't refuse my suggestion without appearing callous, yet he clearly resented my intrusion into his carefully managed dynamic.

Bailee, still recovering from my 'stunt double' comment, suddenly blurted out, her voice a little sharper than before. "Don't you think we look alike, Alexa? Everyone always says so." She tried to regain control, to force the comparison, her eyes searching mine for any sign of acknowledgment, any flicker of the old jealousy.

I blinked slowly, feigning mild surprise. "Oh, do they?" I said, a faint, amused smile playing on my lips. "I suppose I'm a bit face-blind in that regard. People always say I resemble my grandmother, but I never quite see it myself." My response was dismissive and indirect, subtly implying that her resemblance to me was not something I considered significant, if I noticed it at all. It was a polite denial, effectively neutralizing her attempt to draw me into a direct comparison.

Bailee's eyes flashed with anger, her careful facade momentarily dissolving. Her lips pressed into a thin line, her hands clenching at her sides. My inability (or refusal) to acknowledge their perceived similarity clearly infuriated her. Her controlled composure broke, revealing a flash of raw resentment.

A few women from our social circle, who had been observing the exchange, stepped in. "Oh, Alexa is famously bad with faces," one chimed in, smiling kindly at me. "She can barely tell her distant cousins apart sometimes." Another added, "Yes, she just has that classic Lane look, you know? It's timeless." Their words further cemented my innocent, slightly oblivious persona, making Bailee's attempts to portray me as a jealous rival appear petty and unfounded.

Bailee' s anger intensified. She opened her mouth to argue, a furious retort forming on her lips. She clearly wanted to press the point, to force me into a corner. Her entire posture tensed, signaling her intent to escalate the confrontation.

Asher, his earlier frustration returning, cut her off sharply. His voice was cold, his eyes hardened. "Bailee, that's enough." He spoke with an authority that brooked no argument, a clear signal of his displeasure. He did not want her to disrupt my carefully maintained facade.

He turned to her, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Go. Wait for me outside. I told you to behave." His command was absolute, a public dismissal that left no room for defiance. He was protecting my peace, albeit for his own manipulative reasons.

Bailee's eyes welled up instantly, her body swaying as if she might collapse. She clutched her chest, attempting to appear faint, a desperate bid for his sympathy. It was another calculated move, designed to make Asher feel cruel for his harshness.

A warning bell rang sharply in my mind. This was exactly how it started in my past life. She would make herself appear fragile, accumulating moral capital, and then, later, she would cash it in against me. I knew her game. I would not let her win this round. This feigned weakness was merely a tactic to make Asher feel guilty, to eventually make me pay for his perceived cruelty towards her.

I acted swiftly. I placed a gentle, reassuring hand on Asher's arm, stopping him just as he was about to reach out to Bailee. "Asher," I said softly, my voice filled with gentle reproof. "Please don't be so harsh." My touch was light, subtly asserting my influence over him.

I then turned to Bailee, offering her another warm, forgiving smile. "Bailee, perhaps it's best if you two discuss this privately," I suggested smoothly, my tone implying a deep understanding. "No need to air your disagreements at such a lovely event. Go on, darling, take a moment." My words made it clear I was above their petty squabbles, gently pushing them out of my orbit, while simultaneously saving Bailee from further public humiliation.

Asher' s rigid posture softened. He looked at me, a flicker of apology in his eyes. "You're right, Alexa," he muttered, his voice hoarse. "I apologize. I shouldn't have put you in such an awkward position." He stopped his harsh reprimand of Bailee, clearly chastened by my implied disapproval.

Bailee, her theatrical sobs abruptly curtailed, sat hunched in a nearby chair, silently simmering. Her face was a study in frustrated resentment. My intervention had saved her from public disgrace, but it had also thwarted her carefully laid plans. She watched me, her eyes filled with a new, speculative anger.

I recognized that look. It was the same one she wore in my first life before she found a way to destroy me—patient, venomous, certain of her eventual victory. This time, I would be ready.
