The city woke to grim news. An encrypted alert flashed across Georgia's secure line: someone connected to David Luther's second identity had been found dead. The report was minimal, almost deliberately vague: no witnesses, no clear cause, a high-security residence, and a note left behind simply stating:
"Truth has a price."
"It can't be a coincidence," Georgia muttered, eyes scanning the details repeatedly. "Whoever did this wanted to send a message-and it's not just to David. It's a warning to anyone connected to him."
James Barnett leaned back, tension etched across his face.
"This person... they were one of his closest associates from the intelligence side," he said, voice low. "They knew too much. If they were eliminated, Dominic or someone else is stepping up the game-and this time, it's lethal."
Elena, analyzing the victim's recent communications, added:
"There were multiple encrypted messages sent in the last 48 hours. Someone was tracking movements, decisions... and they didn't want this information to survive."
The news hit James like a bullet: not only was the threat escalating, but it was now personal.
Georgia immediately began mapping connections. Travel logs, meetings, financial transactions-every interaction connected to David's second identity was under scrutiny.
"This wasn't random," she said, furiously typing. "Every move we know about... every contact... there's a pattern. They're sending a clear signal: anyone digging into David Luther's dual life is in danger."
James grimaced.
"And we've been digging."
He thought of the fire, the moles, the shadowy third parties. The city itself had become a minefield. Now, someone had detonated a trap-one that had taken a life.
"We need to figure out if Dominic orchestrated this, or if it's someone else entirely," James said. "Because if it's the latter, we might be too late for the rest of them."
As night fell, Georgia and James monitored the safehouse feeds. A car pulled up outside, blacked-out windows glinting under the streetlights. No one entered or exited immediately.
Suddenly, a folded note appeared on the windshield, perfectly timed and placed. Georgia picked it up, heart pounding.
"You think the game is yours to play? You're wrong. Some pieces move without your knowledge. – Unknown"
Before they could react, a secondary alert pinged: another close associate, one who had been quietly assisting them in the investigation, was reported missing.
James and Georgia realized the deadly pattern was escalating faster than they could track. Someone was eliminating all links to David Luther's hidden identity-and they were next. The enemy was closer, smarter, and more ruthless than ever before.
