Chapter 165 – A Dangerous Liaison
James Barnett paced the dimly lit room of the temporary safehouse. Every monitor, every alert, every transaction he reviewed showed the same truth: Dominic Reyes had positioned his network to anticipate every move James and Georgia made.
"We're running out of time," Georgia said, her voice tight. "Every financial trail we try to follow is a dead end. Dominic is always one step ahead."
James stopped pacing. A thought struck him, one he hadn't dared to consider.
"There's someone he doesn't expect," James said slowly. "Someone so close to Dominic's operations, yet overlooked. If we can bring them to our side, we can finally turn the tables."
He tapped his phone and sent a secure message: a single phrase, encrypted, to an old contact from his early corporate days-a person Dominic had assumed would never interfere.
"If they respond, we might have our first real advantage."
Minutes later, a knock at the door shattered the tense silence. A tall figure in a tailored suit stepped inside, exuding authority and calm.
"James Barnett," the visitor said, extending a hand. "I've been expecting your call."
It was Elena Kross, a former high-level strategist who had once advised Dominic on global financial operations. She had walked away years ago, disgusted by his methods-but no one knew she had been quietly observing his empire, keeping records, and waiting for the right time to strike.
"You're the one Dominic never anticipated," James said, a flicker of hope in his voice.
Elena smiled coldly.
"I've been waiting for someone brave-or desperate-enough to take him on. But make no mistake: this won't be easy. Dominic plays a long game. One misstep and we're finished."
She laid out her plan: infiltrate Dominic's internal network, use his own financial systems against him, and expose his operations globally. But for it to work, James and Georgia would have to act with precision, stealth, and complete trust in Elena-a gamble with stakes higher than ever.
As they prepared to execute the first stage of the operation, James' phone buzzed with an encrypted alert.
"I know you've allied with someone unexpected. That was a mistake. – D.R."
The room went silent. A shadow flickered past the rain-streaked window.
"He's watching," Georgia whispered.
James exchanged a look with Elena.
"Then it begins," he said, voice tight with determination.
Outside, Dominic Reyes' black SUV idled, sensors tracking the safehouse. In his hand, he held a tablet displaying live feeds of James, Georgia, and Elena. A small, sinister smile crossed his face:
"So, the game changes. Good. Let's see how far their luck carries them."
The battle lines were drawn, and the next move would determine not just corporate control, but life and death on a global scale.
