He Took My Fortune, I Took His Future

I threw my weight backward, flattening myself into the shallow alcove behind the door's outward swing. My shoulder blades ground against the cold plaster. I squeezed my eyes shut.

Rainer stepped into the hallway. His leather shoes scuffed the hardwood, stopping mere inches from my hiding spot.

"Damn it," he muttered.

He knelt. The rustle of heavy paper filled the quiet corridor as he gathered the spilled financial reports.

"Is she out there?" Vera hissed from inside the office. Her voice shook with poorly concealed panic.

"No," Rainer replied, standing up. "She must have dropped the file and ran for the elevators. The hallway is completely empty."

"Rainer, we're dead! If she goes to the board—"

"Shut up, Vera. Stop panicking," he snapped. He stepped back into his office but failed to pull the door completely shut. A two-inch gap remained, broadcasting their conversation perfectly into the silent hall.

"She caught us having sex on your desk!" Vera cried.

"So what? She's weak. A divorce takes months to process. By the time she even contacts a lawyer, we’ll be gone."

My jaw tightened. Gone?

"Are you absolutely sure?" Vera asked. Her tone shifted. The fear vanished, replaced by a sharp, greedy curiosity. "Did the final loan actually clear?"

"I signed the last of the paperwork this morning. I used her digital signature, obviously," Rainer scoffed. "Marnie trusts me blindly. She hasn't checked our joint accounts in years."

A freezing sensation started at the base of my neck and spread down my spine.

"How much did you get?" Vera pressed.

"Five million," Rainer said smoothly. "Leveraged entirely against her family's estate. The bank manager approved the transfer an hour ago."

My stomach violently twisted. The estate. The home my grandparents built from nothing. He mortgaged my family's legacy.

"You really are brilliant," Vera murmured. The wet sound of a kiss echoed through the gap. "When do the funds become liquid?"

"Friday. The second that money hits my offshore account, I’m liquidating all the company shares. We board the private jet to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday morning."

"Malaysia," Vera sighed happily. "I can't wait to leave this miserable city. But what happens to Marnie when they realize the money is missing?"

"She gets the debt." Rainer laughed. The sound grated against my ears, harsh and cruel. "The loans are entirely in her name. The company is bleeding cash, and I tied all her personal assets to the failing subsidiaries. When the creditors come knocking next week, they’ll take her house, her cars, everything."

I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper.

"Won't she go to the police?" Vera asked.

"Let her try. On paper, she is the CEO of the shell companies. I'm just an employee. She set up the initial capital seven years ago. She literally handed me the keys to destroy her."

"You played her perfectly, Rainer."

"She was a stepping stone, Vera. A naive, rich girl who wanted to play savior to a broke entrepreneur. I needed her money to start Caldwell Enterprises. Now I have exactly what I need."

"And you have me."

"Exactly. Go fix your skirt. The Tokyo reps are waiting in the boardroom."

I didn't wait to hear another syllable.

I slid away from the wall. I placed my feet carefully on the plush carpet, moving without a single sound toward the emergency exit.

I pushed the heavy fire door open and slipped into the concrete stairwell. The metal latch clicked quietly behind me.

I descended two flights of stairs before pulling my phone from my pocket. My fingers shook violently, but I forced them to steady.

I scrolled to a blocked contact at the very bottom of my list. I hit unblock. I pressed dial.

The line rang twice.

"Hello?" a deep, gravelly voice answered.

"Julian," I said.

"Marnie. I never thought I'd see this name on my screen again."

"You told me to call if I ever woke up and saw the truth."

"And did you wake up?"

"He's stealing five million against my estate and fleeing to Malaysia on Saturday."

"I warned you about him seven years ago, Marnie."

"I know. You were right about everything."

"Where are you right now?" Julian asked, his tone shifting instantly from casual to commanding.

"Stairwell of Caldwell Enterprises."

"Get out of the building. Do not let him see you. Go to the diner on 4th and Elm. I'll meet you there in twenty minutes."

"I'm on my way."

I hung up and hurried down the remaining flights. I pushed through the ground-floor exit and stepped into the underground parking garage.

Marcus stood by his security booth, adjusting his belt.

"Leaving so soon, Mrs. Caldwell?" he asked.

"Rainer had everything he needed," I replied, keeping my voice entirely flat.

"You sure you're okay? You look a bit pale."

"Just a sudden migraine, Marcus. The fluorescent lights up there are brutal."

"Want me to call Mr. Caldwell to come down?"

"No!" I snapped, then quickly softened my tone. "No, don't disturb him. He's in a crucial meeting with the Tokyo reps."

"Alright then. Drive safe, ma'am."

"You too, Marcus."

I walked to my sedan and climbed inside. I locked the doors immediately.

I stared at my reflection in the rearview mirror. My eyes remained completely dry. The urge to cry had vanished entirely, replaced by a freezing, absolute rage.

He wanted to leave me with nothing.

I started the engine.

"Let's see who loses everything, Rainer," I whispered to the empty car.

I pulled out of the garage and merged into the heavy afternoon traffic.

Twenty minutes later, I walked into the dimly lit diner on 4th and Elm. The smell of burnt coffee hung in the air.

Julian sat in a corner booth. He wore a sharp black suit, his dark hair slicked back. He slid a steaming mug across the table as I slid into the vinyl seat opposite him.

"Drink," he ordered.

I wrapped my hands around the warm ceramic. "I don't have time for coffee, Julian."

"You have time to calm down," he countered. "Tell me exactly what you heard."

I repeated the entire conversation. I told him about the desk, Vera, the forged digital signatures, and the five-million-dollar loan against my family's estate.

Julian listened without interrupting. His dark eyes narrowed slightly.

"Five million," Julian mused, tapping his fingers on the table. "He's much bolder than I thought."

"He's leaving Saturday morning," I said. "I need to freeze the assets immediately. I need to call the bank."

"No," Julian said sharply.

"What do you mean, no? He's stealing my family's money!"

"If you freeze the accounts now, he’ll know you're onto him. He’ll panic and run early. He probably has hidden accounts you don't even know about. We need to trap him completely."

"How do we do that?"

"We let the bank transfer the money on Friday," Julian explained, leaning closer. "But we intercept the routing number. We change the destination account to one I control."

"Can you actually do that?"

"I run the largest private equity firm in the city, Marnie. I can reroute a wire transfer in my sleep. But you have to do the hardest part."

"Which is?"

"You have to go back home tonight and pretend absolutely nothing happened."

I stared at him. "You want me to smile at him?"

"I want you to make him dinner. I want you to ask about his day. He is going to lie right to your face. He might even touch you. You cannot flinch."

My stomach turned at the thought of Rainer's hands on me, the same hands that had just been all over Vera.

"I can do it," I stated firmly.

"Are you sure?" Julian asked, searching my face. "Because if you break character, he runs."

"He won't run. I'll play the perfect, naive wife one last time."

My phone suddenly vibrated against the tabletop.

The screen lit up. Rainer’s name flashed in bright white letters.

Julian glanced at the screen, then looked up at me. A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face.

"Show time," Julian said.

I picked up the phone and pressed answer.

"Hi, honey," I said, forcing a sickeningly sweet tone into my voice. "Did you find the folder?"
