Chapter 1 of He Humiliated Me, Then Wanted Me Back

The entire syndicate gathered to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary.

As the donna of the Dacre empire, I stood beside my husband, Nikolai Dacre, the most feared don on the eastern seaboard. In his black tailored suit, with that cold, devastating face and the quiet power that made grown men lower their eyes, he looked exactly like what the underworld believed him to be—untouchable, ruthless, perfect.

“Mrs. Dacre, you look stunning tonight,” one of the capos’ wives said with a bright smile.

Nikolai slid an arm around my waist, his touch light but possessive, as if he still had every right to claim me.

“She always does,” he said smoothly, his deep voice carrying just enough warmth to make the room melt.

A few people laughed softly. Others raised their glasses. Someone muttered that Don Dacre still looked at his wife like she hung the moon.

Nikolai leaned down and pressed a kiss to my temple, painting the perfect portrait of a devoted husband in front of the entire room.

And all I could think was how badly I wanted to tear his mask off in front of everyone.

Because I knew the truth.

Earlier that afternoon, I had gone into his private office to leave the cufflinks I’d bought him for our anniversary. I wasn’t snooping. I never needed to. In our world, survival taught you to notice things men thought you were too soft to see.

That was when I found the velvet box tucked inside the bottom drawer of his desk.

My hands had gone cold as I opened it.

Inside was a diamond-and-ruby necklace so breathtaking it made my breath catch. Not because it was beautiful, but because it was personal. Rubies had always been my favorite. Nikolai knew that. He also knew I had stopped wearing them years ago because he once told me red was too loud, too vulgar, too hungry on a woman like me.

He had never bought me rubies.

Not once.

Tucked beneath the necklace was a handwritten note.

To my dearest love, Via.

Via Lousar.

Sister of his underboss. The woman he swore meant nothing. The woman whose name had followed us like a ghost for nearly a year.

I had suspected it for months. The late-night meetings that never needed minutes. The calls he took in private. The way Via smiled at him like she already owned what belonged to me. The way Nikolai stopped touching me when no one was looking.

But that note?

That note didn’t leave room for lies.

“Vivica.”

His voice dragged me back to the present. I looked up to find him watching me with those dark, unreadable eyes, one hand extended toward me.

In it was a small black box.

“Happy anniversary, tesoro.”

The crowd instantly erupted into applause. Glasses lifted. Cameras flashed. Every head in the ballroom turned toward us beneath the glittering chandeliers of the Dacre estate.

I opened the box carefully.

Inside lay a sapphire necklace.

The gemstones were deep blue, elegant, expensive, and completely wrong.

A murmur swept across the room.

“It’s gorgeous.”

“What a gift.”

“Only the don could pull off something like that.”

Nikolai smiled as if he’d just offered me the moon. “Beautiful, isn’t it?”

I looked at the necklace, then up at the man who had spent the afternoon buying rubies for his mistress and the evening fastening sapphires around my throat like a chain.

“It’s lovely,” I said softly.

And everyone smiled, believing they had just witnessed another perfect moment in a perfect marriage.

No one saw the way my nails bit into my palm.

No one noticed how hard it was to breathe.

The orchestra started up again. More wine flowed. Men toasted to loyalty, legacy, blood, and family—the usual lies dressed in crystal and gold. Nikolai stayed close, playing his part flawlessly. He touched the small of my back when people were watching. He pulled out my chair. He kissed my knuckles like I was still the center of his world.

To everyone else, we were power incarnate.

The king and queen of a criminal empire.

But queens always know when the crown is slipping.

Later in the evening, while Nikolai was entertaining a group of allies from Chicago, I saw her.

Via stood near the bar in a red silk dress that clung to her like sin. Diamonds glittered at her throat, but not the ones he’d bought her. Not tonight. Tonight, she wanted me to know she could wait. Her lips curved when our eyes met, smug and venomous.

She raised her champagne glass in my direction like we were sharing a secret.

Then Nikolai looked at her.

It was only for a second. A flicker. Barely noticeable.

But I saw it.

And worse—so did she.

A few minutes later, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced down, then leaned close to me, his mouth near my ear.

“Excuse me for a moment,” he murmured. “There’s business I need to handle.”

Business.

That was what he called her now.

I smiled up at him with perfect grace. “Of course.”

He kissed my cheek and disappeared into the crowd, moving through the ballroom with the quiet authority of a man everyone feared and no one dared stop.

I stood there alone, still smiling as guests drifted toward me.

“You and Nikolai are marriage goals,” one woman sighed.

“You two are stronger than ever,” another added.

I nearly laughed.

Instead, I thanked them and sipped my champagne, letting the bubbles burn my throat.

Then my phone vibrated in my clutch.

I looked down.

A message from an unknown number.

No, not unknown.

Unwanted.

Via:

The sapphires are pretty. But we both know who he buys rubies for.

My stomach turned cold.

A photo followed.

Nikolai stood in one of the estate’s private hallways, half-shadowed by golden light. Via was pressed close to him, his hand flat against her lower back, his head bent toward her as though whatever she was saying mattered more than the wife he had just left standing in a ballroom full of people.

It wasn’t even the intimacy that hurt most.

It was how familiar he looked.

Relaxed. Unguarded. Real.

A version of him I had not seen in a very long time.

For one wild moment, I wanted to march down that hallway, throw the photo in his face, and demand he deny it in front of everyone.

But I didn’t.

Women in our world survived by mastering silence before they ever learned revenge.

So I lifted my chin, locked my phone, and walked back into the party like I wasn’t bleeding under my skin.

When Nikolai returned twenty minutes later, not a hair out of place, he wore the same calm expression he used in meetings before deciding who lived and who disappeared.

“The Conti shipment hit a delay,” he said. “I had to deal with it.”

Naturally.

I met his gaze and smiled. “You’re always handling something.”

His eyes lingered on me for a moment, as if testing whether I meant more than the words.

If he sensed anything, he didn’t show it.

By the end of the night, he escorted me upstairs himself, one hand firm at my waist as if I still belonged to him. As if this was still our home. As if he hadn’t just humiliated me in the shadows while the entire syndicate toasted our love in the light.

“You did well tonight,” he said once we reached our bedroom. “You represented this family exactly the way you should.”

I turned to look at him.

Represented.

That was what I was now. Not his wife. Not his partner. Not the woman who built half his empire by standing beside him through blood, war, and betrayal.

A symbol. A beautifully dressed weapon. A silent queen on a marble chessboard.

“The men respect you,” he continued, loosening his cufflinks. “They see stability when they look at us.”

Us.

The word tasted like poison.

He stepped closer and brushed a strand of hair from my face, his fingers grazing my cheek with a tenderness that would have broken me once.

“I’ll be back later,” he said. “There’s one last thing I need to take care of.”

I didn’t ask where he was going.

I already knew.

So I nodded.

He left without another word.

The bedroom door clicked shut behind him.

Silence rushed in.

For a long moment, I stood there in the center of our suite, surrounded by designer furniture, fresh roses, and five years of lies. Then I reached up, unclasped the sapphire necklace, and let it fall onto the bedspread.

The blue stones gleamed against the silk comforter like a mockery.

Not a gift.

A leash.

I stared at it, then at my reflection in the mirror across the room.

Perfect hair. Perfect gown. Perfect mafia wife.

But my eyes were no longer soft.

They were sharp. Awake. Furious.

Nikolai thought I would keep wearing the jewels, smiling for his men, and pretending not to see what he did in the dark.

He thought loyalty meant I would stay.

He thought humiliation would break me before betrayal ever could.

He was wrong.

Because if Nikolai Dacre wanted to hand his heart, his secrets, and his weakness to another woman, then he could keep all of it.

I was done being the beautiful wife he displayed in public while dishonoring me in private.

And if walking away meant choosing my brother, leaving the Dacre empire behind, and setting fire to everything I helped build—

Then so be it.

Let the king keep his throne.

I was ready to watch his kingdom bleed.
