From Puck Bunny To The Rival's Queen

Cordia POV:

At nine-fifty the next morning, I stood before the headquarters of First Principle Analytics. It was a skyscraper of glass and steel, a monument to the future. It was the antithesis of the Dynamos' old-money, brick-and-ivy headquarters. This building didn't whisper about its power; it gleamed with it.

I smoothed the lapels of my tailored gray suit, took a deep breath that did little to calm the frantic beating of my heart, and walked inside.

The lobby was cool and minimalist. The security was intense. A polite but firm guard directed me to a facial recognition scanner. After my identity was confirmed against the visitor log, a sleek, automated gate slid open.

The receptionist greeted me by name before I could introduce myself. "Miss Maynard. Mr. James is expecting you. This way, please."

We rode a silent, high-speed elevator to the top floor. The doors opened not to a reception area, but directly into a vast, open-plan office. Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows. Employees worked with a quiet, focused intensity that was a world away from the gossip and politics that fueled the Dynamos' office.

The receptionist led me to a heavy, frosted-glass door at the far end of the floor and knocked softly. "Sir, Miss Maynard is here."

A deep, clear voice answered from within. "Come in."

I pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The office was enormous, occupying a corner of the building with a 270-degree view of Manhattan.

A man stood with his back to me, looking out at the city. He wore a perfectly tailored dark blue suit, his posture ramrod straight. Even from behind, he radiated an aura of absolute control.

He turned.

My breath hitched. He was younger than I'd expected, maybe early thirties. He had short, dark brown hair, and a face of sharp angles and stark planes. But it was his eyes that captured me. They were the color of a frozen lake, a startling, intelligent gray that seemed to see everything.

"Miss Maynard. Welcome." His voice was as steady and calm as it had been on the phone. "I'm Hart James."

He didn't offer to shake my hand. Instead, he gestured toward a seating area with a low table and two leather armchairs. "Please."

The small, professional distance was a relief. He poured me a glass of water himself before sitting opposite me.

"I don't like to waste time," he began, his gray eyes pinning me in place. "I invited you here because I want you to be our General Manager."

I found my voice. "Mr. James, I'm honored. But as you may know, I'm still technically an employee of the Dynamos, and there's the matter of-"

"Your non-compete agreement?" he interrupted smoothly. "I'm aware of it. And I'm confident you'll find a way to resolve it." He paused, his gaze sharpening. "First Principle is prepared to wait, and to offer any legal support you may require."

I stared at him, stunned. How could he be so certain?

A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of his mouth. "We're a data company, Miss Maynard. Information is our lifeblood." He leaned forward slightly. "I'm also aware of the resignation letter you had couriered to Mr. Bray's office yesterday morning."

The air left my lungs. I felt utterly transparent.

He must have seen the alarm in my eyes, then he suddenly laughed. “I’m sorry, it seems that my joke, meant to liven up the atmosphere, actually scared you. Although I have this ability, I don’t have the habit of revealing others’ privacy. What happened just now was just my guess… It seems I was right.”

His tone softened. "Please, don't misunderstand. My intent is not to intimidate you, but to demonstrate my sincerity. I've done my homework."

He picked up a tablet from the table and slid it across to me. "This is a draft of our offer. Salary, equity, and full authority to commercialize the research from your academic work."

My heart hammered against my ribs. He wasn't just offering me a job. He was offering me back the dream Donavon had forced me to abandon.

I took a deep breath, trying to gather my scattered thoughts. "Mr. James, I appreciate this more than you know. But I've just come from a... complicated situation. I need to be sure this is the right move for me, and that I'm the right person for you."

I met his gaze directly. "I propose a one-month trial period. I'll work as a consultant. At the end of the month, if we're both satisfied, we can sign a permanent contract. It's the best way for me to prove my value, and for you to assess it without long-term risk."

He listened, his expression unreadable. When I finished, a flicker of genuine admiration lit his eyes. "Excellent. I appreciate your prudence and your strategic thinking."

He stood, and this time, he did extend his hand. "In that case, Cordia. Welcome to First Principle. I look forward to seeing what you can do."

I took his hand. His grip was firm, warm, and brief. A purely professional touch.

But he had called me Cordia. Not Miss Maynard. The shift was subtle, but significant. We were no longer just a potential employer and employee. We were collaborators.

As I left the building and stepped back into the bright sunlight, I felt a sense of possibility I hadn't felt in years.

My phone buzzed. It was a reply to my leave-of-absence email from Donavon. Two cold words.

"Noted. Acknowledged."

Not a single question about my mother. Not a word of concern.

I stared at the message for a long moment, then deleted it. The last ember of warmth I might have held for him died with it.
