Forgotten at the Altar of My Own Marriage

The next morning, I stayed in bed, the suitcase zipped and ready by the door. Footsteps echoed in the hallway, voices, laughter—but I didn’t move.

Then Xavier burst into the room, irritation written all over his face. “Where’s the necklace?”

I sat up slowly. “What necklace?”

“That necklace—the limited edition one I gave to Juliette. It’s gone. Did you take it back?”

I blinked. “Why would I take it back? You’re the one who gave it away. Without even asking me.”

“It’s missing,” he growled. “She was supposed to wear it today. And now you’ve stooped so low as to steal it back? Unbelievable.”

I stared at him, stunned. “You think I’m the one who’s low?”

“This is why you’re not coming with us,” he snapped. “You don’t deserve to be treated right. You’ve always been petty, Liana.”

Before I could answer, Juliette appeared, a little flustered. “Wait, wait—it’s not her fault. I must have misplaced it. Don’t be mad at her.”

Their father, Henry, came up behind them, tapping his watch. “We’re going to be late. Just buy another if you need to. Let’s go. Liana—make sure the house is clean by the time we return.”

And just like that—they left.

No hugs. No goodbyes. No thank-you for the twenty years I gave them. Only orders. Only silence.

I stood by the window and watched the car pull away, taking with it everything that had once made me feel part of a family.

Hours later, my phone buzzed.

Juliette: Hey sis, we found the necklace! I’m so sorry about earlier. I’ll buy you something nice to make it up. Thanks again for letting me wear it—it’s gorgeous!

Another ping.

Xavier: Black card’s on the table. Buy whatever you want while we’re gone.

I read both and laughed. Soft, bitter laughter.

This had always been the cycle, hadn’t it? Hurt me. Humiliate me. Then hand me a credit card, as if spending money could erase the fact that I was unwanted, unloved, undervalued.

But not this time.

I looked around the quiet, empty house—like a ghost town echoing with memories that no longer belonged to me. Today, I was done being their shadow.

I walked slowly to the living room, retrieved the envelope I had tucked under the couch the night before, and placed it neatly on the coffee table. Inside were the divorce papers and our wedding ring.

I paused in the doorway. One last glance—not for nostalgia, just confirmation. I wasn’t coming back.

At the airport, I sat near Gate 18, sipping coffee from a paper cup, staring at my phone screen. I let myself smile. My life was beginning—right as they thought they had erased me.

I was scrolling through a rooftop restaurant review when a familiar voice cut through the air.

“Shit. My passport—where is it?”

Juliette.

I froze. They were across the terminal, laughing, wheeling designer luggage, all joy and chaos. Henry adjusting his tie. My son’s wife snapping a photo. And Juliette, rifling through her purse, visibly flustered.

I doubted they’d even notice me; they were too busy in their own world.

Xavier rubbed his forehead. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Didn’t Liana pack it for you?”

Juliette blinked. “I… I asked her, but I don’t know if she—”

“Damn useless bitch. I told her to check everything,” Xavier muttered, pulling out his phone. “I’ll call her. She can bring it. Not like she’s busy.”

Of course. Even now, after everything—they still expected me to fix their mistakes.

My phone rang.

Xavier.

Then a message.

Xavier: Juliette left her passport. Can you bring it to Terminal 2? We’re at Gate 7. ASAP.

I stared at the screen—the same screen I’d longed to see his name on, hoping for a text that said I love you, that he was proud, that he saw me.

Now… it was proof that even when I was no longer theirs, they still demanded my service.

Slowly, I typed a reply.

Liana: I don’t want to do it. I’m done being your nanny, Xavier. Goodbye.

I turned off the phone. Lifted my suitcase. And walked toward Gate 18.
