Chapter 1 of My Fiancée Let His Secretary Cut Me—Now I Let the World See Them Crumble

I was in the middle of drafting a confidential medical report when a sharp, stabbing pain shot through my left eye. My vision blurred instantly—washed out in a haze of blood-red.

Clutching my eye, I rushed into the best private hospital in town, desperate for immediate help. But just as I reached the operating room, a woman in full glam makeup blocked my way, practically reeking of expensive perfume and attitude.

Trying not to collapse from the dizziness, I held up my emergency admission slip. Trying not to collapse from the dizziness, I held up my emergency admission slip. “Ma’am, the rule here is first come, first served. I need surgery—immediately. Please get back in line.”

She scoffed and swatted my hand away like I was some kind of pest.

“Line?” she snapped, jabbing a manicured finger at her own chest. “Do you know who I am? I’m Mr. Hargrave’s personal assistant—from Hargrave Global.”

“I’m here for a double eyelid surgery with Dr. Boatman. And you? Who the hell are you to just barge in and steal my slot like this? Do you have any idea what kind of consequences you’re inviting? Forget a surgery—one word from Mr. Hargrave and he could make this entire hospital his.”

She stepped in closer, voice shrill and dripping with arrogance. “So, if you know what’s good for you, you’ll walk out now—before this reaches Mr. Hargrave’s ears and he decides to deal with it himself.”

I let out a disbelieving laugh.

Mr. Hargrave from Hargrave Global… was she talking about Lochlan?

Just a few days ago, my father told me I was engaged to someone named Lochlan Hargrave. We hadn’t had the chance to meet yet—too busy with work on both sides, I guess. I’d only heard he was the newly appointed CEO of the largest investment conglomerate in the region. Charismatic, refined, allegedly well-mannered.

Without wasting another second, I pulled out my phone and made the call.

When he answered, I didn’t bother with pleasantries. My tone was icy. “Your assistant is blocking me from entering the OR because she says she’s here for a double eyelid surgery. Are you seriously going to allow this?”

***

Lochlan voice came through the line, cold and unmistakably irritated. “What kind of nonsense are you stirring up this time, Ingrid?”

I blinked, stunned. Was I hearing this right?

This was the same man both our families had described as a respectful and promising young professional?

I swallowed down my disbelief. “Is this how you talk to your fiancée, Lochlan?"

He let out a humorless chuckle, laced with mockery. “Fiancée? Don’t push your luck, Ingrid.”

Then come his commanding voice, “You step away, leave Olivia and her business alone.”

The call cut off before I could say another word.

Olivia Charles—his secretary—grinned victoriously and yanked the phone from my hand, waving it in front of my face like a trophy.

“You heard him. Even he says you should stay out of it.”

She gave me a once-over, her eyes gleaming with ridicule. “So you’re the poor soul lucky enough to be engaged to our Mr. Hargrave, huh?”

“Tch. Look at those clothes. You’re a walking fashion disaster. Even standing next to you could make him look poor. And you actually had the nerve to complain about me to him? Pathetic.”

I could feel myself trembling, fury and pain mingling in my chest. The pain in my eye worsened, sending waves of nausea down my spine.

The engagement was their idea. The Hargrave Family had come to us—not the other way around. And yet here she was, acting like I had clawed my way into their world like some desperate social climber.

“So what if you work for Lochlan?” I said, covering my eye and forcing my voice to steady. “In this world, there are rules. And in hospitals, the rule is emergencies come first.”

Olivia let out an overly dramatic gasp and clutched her chest like I’d just delivered the punchline of a stand-up routine. “Oh, sweetie. You still think hospitals follow rules? That’s adorable.”

“In case you missed the memo, Hargrave Global is the rulebook here. One word from Mr. Hargrave and Dr. Boatman would be sprinting over here in a heartbeat.”

She leaned in. “Compared to Hargrave Global, this hospital’s a shack with a stethoscope.”

That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard my entire life.

I’d spent a decade at one of the country’s most elite scientific agencies, working on classified medical research. Even Brian Griggs from the National Neuroscience Board called me “Dr. Monroe” with deference.

And this assistant—this glorified scheduler—was throwing her weight around like she owned the place?

I didn’t have time for this. I clutched my emergency slip tighter, trying to edge past her.

“This is a hospital–people going here to get their lives saved. It’s not a place for you to play ranks.” I bit out. “If you want to abuse your power, you can go back to your glass tower and bark at interns.”

But as I tried to move, Olivia yanked my arm and slammed me back against the wall.

“You dare fight me for this OR?” Her voice was low and venomous. “In Ardelis, Hargrave Global is the gold standard. You’re a nobody. Who the hell do you think you are lecturing me about fairness?”

Ridiculous.

Dr. Boatman himself had pulled strings through half the medical board just to get an introduction to my father last month. All so he could ask me to join his new research initiative.

And now his hospital was letting a secretary act like a queen?

I wrenched my arm free. “Can you read? It says emergency in bold print. I'm not the one jumping the line—you are!”

I looked around, expecting at least one nurse or doctor to step in and do the right thing.

But instead, they just stood there—whispering, pointing, shrinking back.

“Is she insane? That’s Miss Charles, secretary or Mr. Hargrave himself. You don’t mess with her.”

“Seriously, even Dr. Boatman treats her like royalty.”

A woman in scrubs—maybe the head nurse—rushed over, hands out in a placating gesture. The head nurse stepped in again, voice tight with apology. “Miss, please… just step aside. Miss Charles was personally approved by Dr. Boatman. You don’t want to make things harder for yourself.”

Another nurse piped up, nervously glancing at my chart. “Your condition’s urgent, sure. But picking a fight with Hargrave Global? That’s not a battle you want. Especially in this city.”

I stared at them—this entire so-called “elite” hospital—grappling with the realization.

In a place supposedly built on medical ethics, all I could hear was politics, privilege and fear.

My fists clenched at my sides. Not in pain, but in disgust.
