Faking My Death for the Mafia Don

Nora Bianchi POV

I stood before the massive front doors of the Rossi Family estate, a place I now intended to leave for the last time.

The sprawling mansion felt less like a home and more like a gilded tomb.

Making my way straight into the master bedroom, I pulled a small duffel bag from the back of the closet.

I packed only the garments I had bought with my own money.

I refused to breathe the same stifling air as this Family for another second.

A dry click from the bedroom door latch broke the silence.

Margaret Rossi stepped into the room.

The Family Matriarch wore a black silk dress, her silver hair pulled back into a severe bun.

She looked at my half-full duffel bag and one of her eyebrows lifted in a slow, questioning arc.

"Are you departing for a discreet holiday, Nora?" she asked, her tone unreadable.

I pulled the zipper of the bag, and it rasped shut.

I met my mother-in-law's gaze, my own reflection swimming in the dark pools of her irises. "No," I told her. "I am severing my ties to this Syndicate, and my marriage to your son."

Margaret did not yell.

She did not threaten me.

She was the only person in this sprawling house who had ever treated me with a measure of respect.

She had never discarded me, not even after the Syndicate doctors had told her I could never produce a Rossi heir.

She knew about the bone marrow donation.

She knew the agonizing price I paid to keep her son alive. But her influence had waned since Vincent became Don; her voice, once the spine of the family, was now reduced to a whisper in its affairs.

With a deliberate grace, Margaret walked over to the edge of the bed and sat down.

"I advised you against this course," she reminded me, her voice softening. "The underworld shows little kindness to women who walk without a Family's name."

"I cannot endure the betrayal, Margaret," I said, my voice faltering with a pain I could no longer suppress. "It will destroy me."

Margaret nodded slowly, a flicker of sorrow in her eyes.

"The Rossi Family has failed in its duty to your honor," she acknowledged quietly.

She reached into the deep pockets of her dress and pulled out a heavy metal lockbox.

She placed it on the mattress next to my bag.

"This contains untraceable gold and blood diamonds," she explained. "A severance."

I stared at the cold metal box, my hands resting at my sides.

"I cannot accept it," I told her, shaking my head. "I will not owe this Syndicate another debt."

Margaret stood up, grabbed my wrists, and pressed the heavy box into my palms.

"This is not a debt. It is for your survival," she insisted, her grip unyielding.

Before I could argue, the sharp ring of a burner phone cut through the heavy silence in the room.

It was vibrating on the nightstand.

I walked over, drew a breath, and put it on speaker.

Vincent's voice crackled through the receiver, sharp with venom.

"The Syndicate divorce papers have arrived at the clinic, Nora," he sneered.

I heard Sophia's voice in the background, a saccharine echo that grated on my nerves.

"Cast her out, Vinnie," she was urging him. "Make me your official Queen."

Vincent ignored her.

"I demand you return to this clinic immediately," he ordered. "You will kneel and submit to my authority. If you beg properly," he added with a dark chuckle, "I might spare your life for the disrespect you showed my men."

My fingers dug into the edge of the nightstand. I felt my nails sink into the fine-grained wood, biting into the veneer until a sharp pain, a prelude to a splinter, silenced the tremor in my throat.

The audacity in his voice severed the last thread of my restraint.

I leaned closer to the phone, my heart a heavy drum against my ribs.

"You are a rotten thing, Vincent," I screamed into the receiver. "I curse you both to hell."

Without waiting for a reply, I grabbed the burner phone and threw it against the carpeted floor. It landed with a muffled thud, the screen fracturing in a single, diagonal line as the call was cut.

I picked up my duffel bag and tucked the lockbox under my arm.

I walked past Margaret and out the door, leaving the Don's world behind me. Behind me, Margaret's sigh was a prayer. Ahead, the world waited to exact its price for my defiance. But I had already decided the price—and it would be paid in blood.
