Exiled with a Bump, Back with a Crown

The chandelier above shimmered too brightly, casting a golden hue that felt more like a spotlight I couldn’t escape. Around me, the room buzzed with high-pitched laughter, the clink of champagne flutes, and the artificial sweetness of overpriced perfume. But all I could register was the thunderous pounding in my chest, each beat louder than the last.

This was her night.

Arden’s grand homecoming soirée—a lavish affair meant to celebrate her triumphant return after a so-called “spiritual sabbatical” through Europe. The same woman who once clung to my hand and swore we'd face everything together had vanished without a word. And now she was back—drenched in power, money, and arrogance.

And just to complete the cruel joke?

Evander was here, too.

His presence felt like a weight pressing against my lungs. He hadn’t said much to me tonight, but when he did, it was ice wrapped in threat.

“Don’t cause a scene tonight, Nerina. Be on your best behavior.”

His hand had seized my wrist earlier, just firm enough to make his point clear—obedience wasn’t up for discussion.

My father stood across the ballroom, casually conversing with other political bigwigs, drink in hand, laughing like nothing was ever wrong. I imagined walking over, whispering the truth into his ear.

Dad, I’m carrying Evander’s children. Please, I need protection. I can’t let him find out. He’ll hurt us. Maybe worse.

But I stopped myself. My father didn’t help unless there was something in it for him. He’d always been that way. And if telling him meant putting my unborn babies at risk… I’d keep my silence.

So I smiled, wore the mask everyone expected me to, and swallowed the panic burning my throat.

That’s when she appeared—like a viper in silk.

“Bestie!” Arden squealed, throwing her arms around me with an exaggerated flair that nearly knocked the wind from me. “I’ve missed you so much!”

The hug was suffocating, her floral fragrance thick and artificial, clinging like smoke. She leaned back and gave me a once-over, eyes gleaming.

“Nerina, babe, you look so… worn down.”

My fingers clenched around my champagne glass.

She gasped and placed a delicate hand on my arm. “Sweetheart, have you been eating properly? You look so… ordinary. No wonder Evander—” She let out a high-pitched laugh and waved it off. “Oops! Forget I said that.”

She wanted me to bite. I could feel it.

I held her gaze. “No wonder Evander what?”

She giggled softly and slid her arm through mine, her tone dropping to a syrupy whisper. “I just meant—you should focus a little more on presentation. Look at me.” She spun in place, letting her fitted designer gown catch the light. “Men adore a woman who takes care of herself. Confidence is sexy, babe. You should really give it a shot.”

I could feel my nails digging into my palm, the sharp sting grounding me.

Arden leaned in again, lowering her voice like she was confiding in me. “You used to be stunning, Dani. But lately? You just seem… drained. Maybe if you put a little more effort in, Evander wouldn’t get bored so easily.”

Her words didn’t just bruise—they cut. Deep.

She masked it as concern, but every syllable was laced with smugness. She knew exactly what she was doing—asserting dominance in a room that was supposed to be hers. Reminding me, without actually saying it, that she had Evander under her thumb.

I stared straight ahead and swallowed hard.

I see you clearly now, Arden. And I won’t forget this.

---

An hour passed before I managed to slip away to the restroom, desperate for a moment of silence. I gripped the edge of the sink, trying to ground myself, to pull in enough air to stop the spinning.

I needed to leave. I needed—

The door creaked open behind me.

I turned, expecting someone fumbling with lipstick or reapplying mascara. Instead, I was met with her reflection in the mirror.

Arden.

She closed the door behind her and locked it with a soft click.

I stiffened.

“What are you doing here?”

She set her clutch on the counter and strolled toward me. “Just wanted a quiet moment with my favorite girl,” she said sweetly. “No audience. Just you and me.”

I didn’t respond.

She tilted her head. “You seem off. What’s wrong?”

“I’m fine.”

She gave a dramatic sigh. “You’re lying.”

From her clutch, she retrieved a small velvet box and popped it open. Nestled inside was a diamond ring—large, glittering, almost obnoxiously so.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” she asked, admiring the stone. “Evander picked it out for me. Said he wanted something one-of-a-kind.”

I felt my insides twist.

She slid the ring onto her finger slowly, her smile widening.

“He has such good taste, don’t you think?”

I didn’t answer.

She lowered her voice, her tone mockingly tender. “Poor Dani. I almost feel sorry for you. Almost.”

My eyes narrowed. “Sorry for what?”

Arden’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction. “Did you really believe you were his one and only?”

My world tilted slightly.

She moved in closer, her voice almost a purr. “We’ve been together since the week after you tied the knot.”

It felt like the floor dropped beneath me.

She smirked. “And in case you’re wondering—yes. It’s been very real.”

Blood rushed in my ears.

“What… what are you saying?”

She leaned into my ear and whispered the words that splintered me completely.

“The grand staircase. Four years ago. That wasn’t a nightmare, Nerina. That was me and Evander. We were having amazing sex while you stood there like a ghost.”

I gasped, staggering back.

I had tried for years to erase that night from memory. I’d been feverish, disoriented. I thought it had been a hallucination—seeing my husband with my best friend. Their limbs entangled. Her laughter mixing with his groans. The scent of alcohol, the sound of skin on skin. I’d collapsed in the hallway, and when I woke up, I convinced myself it had been a dream.

But it hadn’t.

Arden traced her finger along the glittering ring. “You were always easy to trick. So obedient. So trusting.”

Something inside me snapped.

I raised my head, locking eyes with her. She waited for the inevitable breakdown. Tears. Pleading.

But instead, I smiled.

Slow. Cold.

And for the first time, she blinked.

Perfect.

I took a step closer. She instinctively backed up.

“Enjoy it while you can,” I murmured, voice steady.

She frowned, confused. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

I reached for the lock, flipping it open.

She could keep her little victory tonight. Let her wear it like a crown.

Because this wasn’t the end.

Not even close.

The game had only just begun.
