Chapter 1 of Empire on the edge : Two hearts bound by power one world poised on the brink

The champagne flute felt heavier with each passing minute. Elena Morgan moved away from the crowded ballroom, seeking escape from the Harrington Foundation's fundraiser.

As she stepped onto Fifth Avenue, the spring chill prompted her to wrap her emerald silk shawl tighter around her shoulders.

Another successful evening, Ms. Morgan!" called out Benjamin Harrington, the foundation's director, from the doorway.

Elena forced a smile. "Two million dollars for children's education. That's what matters.

""Will we see this in tomorrow's paper?

The Times should recognize our work.""I'm sure my colleagues in the social section will cover it thoroughly," she replied, checking her watch. Eleven forty-seven, "If you'll excuse me, I should be going.

""Of course! Let me call you a car.

""No need," Elena said, already backing away. "Fifteen blocks isn't far. The walk will clear my head.

"Five blocks later, Elena paused at a crosswalk. Lexington Avenue offered a shortcut—narrower, dimmer, quieter. Her usual caution wavered under the weight of fatigue."Just this once," she muttered to herself, turning onto the shadowed street.

The transition from Fifth's brightness to Lexington's shadows happened instantly. Her heels clicked loudly against the concrete, each step echoing off brick walls that suddenly felt too close.

A trash can crashed to her right. Elena's pulse spiked.

"Who's there?" she called, her voice smaller than intended.A shadow materialized before she could process what was happening. Black clothes. Masked face. Only the eyes visible—flat, emotionless, calculating.

"Ms. Morgan." The voice came distorted, mechanical. "Asking questions about things that don't concern you.

"Elena's muscles tensed, her Krav Maga training urging her to move. "I don't know what you're talking about.

""Don't play innocent." The figure stepped closer. Strong fingers gripped her arm, yanking her backward. "The Meridian Project. You accessed files you shouldn't have.

"Confusion washed over her. "How could you possibly …..

""Your investigation ends tonight," the attacker interrupted.

"Permanently."Pain exploded across her cheek as the attacker struck her. Her handbag tumbled to the concrete. Streetlight glinted off metal—a knife blade catching the dim glow.

"Please," Elena said, backing away. "Whatever you think I know ….

""You know enough to die for it.

"Elena retreated, calculating the distance to safety. Too far to the main road. Her heel caught on uneven pavement, sending her crashing down. Concrete scraped her bare shoulders.

"Nobody will hear you scream," the attacker said, knife descending…….

Damien Cross navigated his Audi through the near-empty streets, the board meeting replaying in his mind.

"We've acquired sixty percent of Thorne Tech shares," his assistant had reported over the car's speaker. "The remaining board members are resisting, but they'll fall in line by Monday.

""Make sure they understand resistance is futile," Damien replied, turning onto Lexington habitually. "I want this acquisition completed by …..

"He stopped mid-sentence. A flash of emerald silk caught his attention .fabric reflecting streetlight as a woman struggled against a dark figure. His foot hit the brake. Not his problem. Not his business.A woman's cry pierced the night.

"I'll call you back," he said, ending the call. His body moved with automatic precision. The car door closed behind him with a soft click barely audible above the sound of his measured footsteps.

Elena's arm rose in futile defense against the descending blade. The blow never landed.A blur of motion intercepted the attacker. A man in an expensive charcoal suit now stood between her and death. He moved with controlled precision calculating and efficient.

The attacker recovered quickly, slashing toward the newcomer.

"Bad decision," Damien said calmly, sidestepping the attack. With almost casual ease, he captured the attacker's wrist and applied pressure at precisely the right angle. The crack of breaking bone echoed in the alley, followed by the knife clattering to the ground.

An inhuman howl erupted from the attacker . the voice distorter making pain sound otherworldly.

"Who sent you?" the Damien demanded.

The attacker responded with a wild punch that met nothing but air .

Damien slipped the blow, countering with a precise strike to the throat.

"Last chance to answer," he said, his voice devoid of emotion.

The attacker staggered back, then straightened. A gun emerged from his jacket.

"Look out!" Elena cried.

Damien moved impossibly fast, redirecting the weapon. Two thunderous reports split the night, bullets finding only brick and concrete.

"Amateur," Damien muttered, delivering three strikes in rapid succession rib, kidney, temple with surgical precision.

The attacker crumpled to the ground, unconscious.Silence descended, broken only by Elena's ragged breathing and distant sirens responding to the gunshots.

Damien turned toward her, blue eyes meeting hers cold, assessing, emotionless. Not the eyes of a rescuer or Good Samaritan. They were the eyes of someone who understood exactly how fragile human life was and exactly how to end it.

Something flickered across his face so brief she nearly missed it. Concern? Worry? Whatever it was vanished instantly behind that impassive mask.

He stepped toward her.

Elena flinched involuntarily.

He froze, jaw muscle tightening almost imperceptibly. Without another word, he turned and walked to the sleek Audi idling at the alley's entrance.

"Wait," Elena called, struggling to her feet.

"Who are you?

"He paused briefly by his car door. "Someone you should forget you ever saw.

""But I need to thank

""No," he interrupted. "You don't. The police are coming. Tell them what happened. Leave me out of it.

""Why did you help me if you want to remain anonymous?

"For a moment, he seemed to consider her question. "Instinct. Nothing more.

""Please," Elena said. "At least tell me your name.

""Names have consequences, Ms. Morgan. You should know that better than most.

"Elena flinched. "How do you know who I am?

"A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "I make it my business to know things. That's why I'm still alive." He glanced at the unconscious attacker. "He mentioned the Meridian Project. Whatever you're investigating, you've angered dangerous people.

""I don't even know what the Meridian Project is not fully. I just started looking into some financial discrepancies.

""Then stop looking," he said flatly. "Next time, I won't be driving by.

""I can't just ignore this. They tried to kill me over information I barely have.

Don't you understand what that means?""It means you're treading in waters filled with sharks." He checked his watch. "The police will be here in approximately ninety seconds.

""Will I see you again?" Elena asked, surprising herself with the question.

Those cold blue eyes studied her for a long moment. "For your sake, Ms. Morgan, I hope not."Taillights disappeared around the corner, leaving her alone with the unconscious attacker.Elena's hands trembled as she retrieved her phone, dialing 911.

"911, what's your emergency?

""I was just attacked," Elena said, her voice steadier than she expected. "A man with a knife and gun. He's unconscious now.

""Are you injured, ma'am? What's your location?

"While answering the dispatcher's questions, Elena noticed a glint near her feet. Bending down carefully on unsteady legs, she retrieved a torn piece of black fabric from the attacker's coat. A logo was embroidered on it unfamiliar, but intentional. Corporate, perhaps Significant.

"Ma'am? Are you still there?

""Yes," Elena replied, slipping the fabric into her clutch. "I'm here."Red and blue lights began painting the alley walls as a patrol car turned onto Lexington.

Two officers approached cautiously, weapons drawn.

"He mentioned the Meridian Project," Elena whispered to herself as the officers secured the scene. "And that man knew my name without introduction."She stared down the empty street where the Audi had disappeared. Questions multiplied in her mind. Who wanted her dead? What was truly hidden in the Meridian Project files? And the man with those cold blue eyes who'd saved her with such ruthless efficiency would their paths cross again?More unsettling still did she want them to?

After He Chose His Mistress I Became His Rival's Star
After He Chose His Mistress I Became His Rival's Star
As my client was getting a little too friendly, Nasir Bradley was enjoying a glass of wine with his assistant nearby. Trying to keep the client happy, I ended up drinking more than I should have and felt on the verge of passing out. Yet Nasir didn’t so much as glance at me; he was too busy picking the olives out of his assistant’s dish, encouraging her to eat. After dinner, the assistant remarked that it had been dull, which was all Nasir needed to hear before pulling over and practically pushing me out of the car to take her to the next event. “This young lady has been working hard lately; I'm just taking her out for some fun,” Nasir said dismissively. “You probably wouldn't understand what the younger crowd is into these days, so it’s best if you don’t come along. Besides, I’m going to make sure she has a great time tonight; we can talk about the marriage license another time.” For five years, Nasir had canceled our wedding plans ninety-nine times. I nodded. If he was always busy, there was really no point in going through with it. From the slightly open passenger window, Leah Palmer stuck out her tongue apologetically, "Sorry, Christina, Nasir's just spoiling me a bit.
Alpha's Affair, Luna's Wrath
Alpha's Affair, Luna's Wrath
I tapped my pencil against the edge of my sketchpad, staring at the half-finished design for the ceremonial necklace I planned to surprise Marcus with for our fifth anniversary. The silver and moonstone piece would symbolize our enduring bond—five perfect years as Alpha and Luna of the Silverstone Pack. "What do you think, Lyra?" I whispered to my wolf, who purred contentedly in my mind. *Beautiful, like all your creations, Victoria.* My inner wolf had always been my greatest supporter, even before Marcus. I smiled, setting down my pencil and stretching my arms above my head. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of our shared study, casting a warm glow over the polished oak desk. Marcus had left his tablet behind this morning in his rush to handle what he'd called an "urgent pack matter." I reached for it, thinking I could review some of the anniversary celebration plans we'd been discussing. We'd granted each other access to our devices years ago—a symbol of trust between mates. The screen lit up at my touch, revealing a messaging app I rarely used. A notification blinked insistently in the corner—from Amber Rodriguez, our new pack coordinator.

Just like the evening breeze leaves no trace
Just like the evening breeze leaves no trace
Chapter 1 It was their seventh wedding anniversary. Carolyn found the divorce agreement in Roger’s nightstand. The pages were covered in scribbles and corrections, as if he’d agonized over them for years. *"If, during the marriage, I fall in love with another person, I voluntarily relinquish all assets and leave with nothing. Asset details as follows…"* His first impulse had been to walk away empty-handed. But the asset section told a different story—a mess of revisions. First, he’d crossed out the property he intended to give her. Then, the fifty million earmarked for her was scratched out and replaced with five hundred thousand. Finally, as if in penance, he had written a single line. *"Better to have Carolyn leave with nothing. No choice, Catherine is pregnant."* … Carolyn sank onto the bed, disbelief washing over her. On the agreement, Roger’s signature was clean and decisive, without a hint of hesitation. And the document had been drafted seven years ago—the very year they married. That year, Roger had been willing to give up everything for her. Yet every year after, he had crossed out another piece of their shared life. Now, seven years later, the one leaving with nothing would be her. Her phone buzzed abruptly. A message from Roger. *"Urgent business. Won't be back."* She called, only to find his phone already switched off. Another notification flashed—a screenshot from a friend. Catherine, the student she sponsored, had posted on social media. *"Wow, got praised! To commemorate my first period without a leak, the big boss said we should celebrate properly!"* In a nine-photo collage, Roger gazed at her, eyes crinkling with affection as he fastened a dazzling gemstone necklace around her neck. The post was tagged at a couples-themed hotel. Carolyn’s breath caught. He couldn’t remember seven years of marriage, of weathering storms together—but he could find the energy to celebrate Catherine’s… leak-free period. And that pendant… she’d seen it at an auction just last week. It was her mother’s lost heirloom. She’d been ready to bid when her bank card was frozen. She’d asked Roger why. A long time later, he finally texted back, telling her not to waste money on such impractical things. Clutching her bidding paddle, she’d sat helplessly in the auction hall. In the end, she resolved to sell one of her own designs to raise the funds. But someone on the phone swooped in with an unbeatable offer and took it. For weeks afterward, Carolyn hated herself—hated that she couldn’t protect her mother’s last keepsake. She never imagined the one who snatched it away was Roger. He knew exactly how much that pendant meant to her. Yet he gave it to Catherine. Even on their seventh anniversary, Roger had lied about being busy with work, while wining and dining the girl she’d sponsored. The anniversary gift he left her was a divorce agreement demanding she leave with nothing. Seven years of marriage. Seven years of infidelity. And Carolyn had known nothing. She’d even introduced the other woman to him herself. Catherine was the impoverished student Carolyn sponsored. The first time Catherine came to their home to give thanks, Roger found her intrusive and disliked her on sight. *"That girl has no manners. Tracked mud all over my cashmere rug."* *"If her grades aren’t up to par, cut the sponsorship."* Back then, Carolyn had teased him, saying not to be jealous—it was good the girl had a grateful heart. She never once suspected Roger and Catherine. For seven years, everyone in their circle believed Roger never played around. That he loved only Carolyn. But by their next meeting, Catherine had become Roger’s personal assistant. Roger explained, *"The girl’s had it tough. You’ve sponsored her for years. Giving her a job is just helping you out."* Carolyn had laughed it off. Now, hands trembling, she opened Catherine’s social media feed. Catherine had always hidden her posts from Carolyn. Now, she seemed desperate to flaunt everything. While Carolyn drank until her stomach bled to secure a deal for Roger, Catherine was using Roger’s card to buy her first Louis Vuitton. While Carolyn changed bedpans for Roger’s bedridden grandmother, Roger was taking Catherine to a perfume atelier for a blending class—calling it a business trip. Catherine had even complained online. *"Your wife is such a pampered princess. Can't handle the tiniest thing without you running back. Can she not live without a man?"* And Roger had replied beneath it. *"If she were half as independent as you, I’d have an easier life."* But that day… Carolyn’s mother had lost her battle with cancer. She’d cried until her heart felt shredded, scrambling to handle the arrangements. All the while, Roger kept checking his phone impatiently, eager to leave. Not for work, she realized now—but because he was desperate to get back to Catherine.

Rejected Luna’s Triumphant Return
Rejected Luna’s Triumphant Return
My childhood friend, who came from the same prestigious Alpha lineage as mine, fell in love with an Omega from the Misty Pines Pack, a modest and unremarkable group. To bond with her, he defied his pack’s expectations and broke off our engagement. Heartbroken, I decided to leave the Silver Moon Pack’s territory and study under a renowned healer in Paris. By the time I returned to London, Felix and Chloe had been bonded for nearly two years, and I had moved on. At the welcome-home party organized for me, Felix, who once defied everyone to be with Chloe, was now looking at her with disdain. His voice was cold, carrying the weight of his Alpha authority as he remarked, "Weren’t you supposed to stay at home? Why come out and make a fool of yourself?" When I got back, my friends threw me a lavish welcome party. Much to my surprise, Felix was there. Seven years ago, he insisted on ending our engagement for Chloe, publicly declaring that if he couldn’t bond with her, he’d rather live as a rogue than accept me. Words like that disregarded the long-standing alliance between our packs.
