Emily stood on the edge of her old life, phone in hand, reading the message her friend had just sent.
[He’s overreacting about a tiny bruise, demanding the doctor give her a full check-up.]
The words felt absurd now. In the past, she might have sent a picture of it to Jeremy with a flood of texts, asking him to explain why he was always there for Miranda. But now, all of that was behind her.
She dialed her best friend, Cara.
“Hey, Cara. I finally broke up with Jeremy. Are you free tonight? I need a night out... and maybe a place to crash.”

The bar was dimly lit, music thumping loud enough to drown out her thoughts. Emily had never been much for nightlife, but tonight, she needed to feel alive, to shake off the weight of the past. Cara spotted her from across the room and waved, flashing a grin as she called out, “Em, over here! About time you finally came to your senses! Honestly, I never thought Jeremy was that into you, but I held my tongue.”
Emily laughed, motioning to the bartender to bring two drinks. She raised her glass, clinking it against Cara’s. “You were right. I was blinded by the idea of love. But I’m wide awake now.”
Cara threw an arm around her and chuckled. “Good. Tonight’s about celebrating you, Emily. And don’t worry—I’ll make sure you don’t end up too wasted. My couch has your name on it.”
They laughed, sharing memories and jokes over drinks. For the first time in months, Emily felt genuinely happy.
In the middle of their conversation, a man’s voice broke through. “Well, look who we have here. A couple of familiar faces! Why don’t you join us in the back? We’re having a little party.”
Emily shook her head politely, but he grinned, undeterred. “Come on, it’s Jeremy’s gathering! He’s doing pretty well for himself, you know—quite the crowd back there.”
Cara’s eyes flashed with mischief and before Emily could protest, she was being pulled toward the private room. “Cara, no!” Emily whispered, but her friend just winked, leaning in close. “Em, if we’re really ending this, let’s end it with style.”
The door swung open, revealing a large group of people, all laughing and drinking. And there, at the center, was Jeremy, an arm wrapped around Miranda, who leaned comfortably into his shoulder. The sight made Cara’s jaw clench, while Emily watched in silence, her gaze steely.
Their “host” introduced them loudly. “Hey, everyone! Look who I bumped into—some friends from school!”
Jeremy finally noticed Emily, his eyes widening slightly. For a split second, he looked unsettled, but quickly regained his composure. “Emily,” he said, his voice tinged with annoyance. “What are you doing here? Were you following me?”
Cara couldn’t hold back. “Oh please, Jeremy. You think the whole world revolves around you? Your friend invited us in here.”
Jeremy’s expression darkened and he shot back, “This is supposed to be a private get-together, Cara. And besides, I don’t remember you two ever going to school with us.”
Cara rolled her eyes, crossing her arms. “Oh, I didn’t realize ‘friends’ were allowed special privileges.” She nodded toward Miranda, who smirked but didn’t respond.
Emily stepped forward, voice calm but piercing. “So this is what a ‘class reunion’ looks like?” she asked, holding her gaze. “Or is this just a cozy little date I’m interrupting?”
Jeremy’s expression turned to one of frustration. He opened his mouth to speak, but Miranda stepped in, smiling sweetly. “You must be Emily,” she said with forced warmth. “Please, don’t take this the wrong way. Jeremy just wanted to catch up with some friends tonight.”
A few people around them shifted uncomfortably, sensing the tension. Someone called out, “Hey, let’s keep the good times rolling! Come on, let’s play a game—Truth or Dare!”
Cara immediately saw the opportunity and nudged Emily toward an open seat. “Come on, Em. Let’s show them a good time.”
Emily gave Jeremy one last, unreadable look before sitting down, choosing a spot on the opposite side of the room. She didn’t need to sit by him to make her presence felt.

The game began, bottle spinning from person to person, laughter growing louder with each round. When it landed on Miranda, her eyes went wide as everyone leaned in, expecting her to pick truth or dare. But before she could speak, Jeremy jumped in. “She just had an accident yesterday. She can’t drink. I’ll do it for her.”
A murmur of surprise went around the room. Cara leaned over, whispering to Emily, “Really laying it on thick, isn’t he?”
Emily kept her gaze steady, a slight smirk tugging at her lips. “Let him try. I’m done playing along.”
Another spin of the bottle and this time, it pointed right at Emily.
One of the partygoers grinned mischievously. “Emily, truth or dare?”
Without missing a beat, she replied, “Truth.”
“Alright… is it true you and Jeremy were engaged?”
The question hung in the air and the crowd turned their attention to her. Emily didn’t flinch.
“Were,” she said clearly, glancing across the room at Jeremy. “That chapter’s over.”
Jeremy looked ready to interrupt, but Emily continued, her voice calm and steady. “Sometimes, you don’t realize when you’re with the wrong person until you get a good look at yourself. That’s what tonight’s about for me.”
An awkward silence fell over the room and Cara gave Emily a proud smile, reaching over to squeeze her hand. But just as they were about to get up and leave, Miranda chimed in, her voice dripping with false innocence.
“Oh, I’m sure it’s all just a misunderstanding,” she said. “Jeremy’s such a caring person. He’s always been there for me, especially when I needed someone the most.”
Emily held her gaze, unbothered. “Good. I hope he’s everything you need, Miranda.”
The room seemed to collectively hold its breath and Jeremy looked as though he wanted to say something, but Emily was already on her feet, Cara at her side.
Cara raised her glass, grinning. “To new beginnings,” she toasted, giving a wink to Emily.
Emily raised her glass as well, meeting Cara’s smile with one of her own. “To new beginnings.”
With that, they walked out, leaving Jeremy and Miranda to their games.
