Chapter 1 of Dumped at My Anniversary, I Married His Worst Enemy

My husband slid divorce papers across the anniversary table I'd booked myself.

"Walk away with nothing," he said. "For twenty years' sake, I'll let you keep your dignity."

Our son didn't even look up from his phone. "Aunt Rose closes deals, Mom. What do you do? You think anniversaries earn equity?"

They'd spent my retirement account on a condo for his mistress.

I signed every page.

Then I used his supplementary card to book first class to Vegas, one good night before he froze it.

At the hotel bar a man was drowning whiskey at exactly my pace.

He raised his glass. "To betrayal."

I raised mine. "To dignity."

After that it's an Elvis chapel, a stranger's hand around mine, a plain band on my finger I don't remember buying.

A noon phone call woke me.

My husband's voice, shaking for the first time in twenty years. "Who were you with last night?"

The man beside me took the phone before I could speak.

"With the wife of your new majority shareholder. Watch your tone."

Then I saw his face.

The face from every magazine cover Gerald kept in a locked drawer.

The rival he'd spent half his life trying to destroy and the other half terrified of.

He hung up and looked at me, far too sober for a hangover.

"Now tell me. Your ex's company. Keep it as a toy, or take it apart?"

"More water, ma'am?" the waiter asked.

"No, thank you," I said.

"Are you sure? We need the table in twenty minutes for another reservation."

"I'm waiting for my husband and son. They'll be here."

"Of course, ma'am."

That was the third refill. The fourth time he had circled my booth. I ran my thumb over the stiff edge of the handwritten card inside my purse. Twenty years. Gerald and Marcus were exactly forty-five minutes late.

I pulled out my phone and dialed my son's number.

Marcus picked up on the fifth ring. Bass thudded through the speaker, accompanied by the clinking of champagne flutes and loud laughter.

"Marcus, where are you and your father?" I asked.

"Mom, God, what do you want?" Marcus groaned. "Are you coming to Aunt Rose's or not?"

My grip tightened on the phone. "Rose's?"

"Her housewarming party," he snapped. "Dad's about to pop the Dom Perignon. If you're going to drag down the mood, just stay home."

"Housewarming?" I asked. "Where?"

"The new condo on 5th Avenue," Marcus replied. "Look, we're busy. Don't ruin tonight."

"I booked Le Bernardin," I said. "For our twentieth anniversary."

"Nobody cares about some outdated dinner, Mom. We have real things to celebrate."

The line went dead.

A cold knot formed in my stomach. Rose. Gerald's executive assistant. A week ago, I found a withdrawal notification from my private retirement account. Three hundred thousand dollars. Gerald claimed it was a temporary bridge loan for a vendor.

It was a down payment.

I left a fifty-dollar bill on the table and walked out.

Twenty minutes later, I pushed open the double doors of the penthouse condo. The foyer smelled of expensive lilies and catered food. Laughter drifted from the main living area.

"Eve! You made it!"

Rose stood in the center of the living room, a champagne flute in one hand. Her other arm was looped tightly through Gerald's. My husband of twenty years didn't even flinch. He adjusted his silk tie, looking down at me with the same clinical detachment he used for underperforming employees.

"Mom, finally," Marcus said, stepping out from the kitchen. He didn't look at me, his attention glued to his phone screen. "You missed the toast."

I stared at Gerald's arm, anchored against Rose's side. "What is this, Gerald?"

"Let's not make a scene, Evelyn," Gerald said. He gestured to a sleek glass coffee table. A thick stack of documents sat perfectly aligned in the center. "Sit down."

I walked over. The bold letters on the first page glared up at me. Marital Settlement Agreement.

"I'm giving you an out," Gerald said, taking a sip of his drink. "A clean break. You leave the company, the house, and the joint accounts. In exchange, I won't drag your name through a messy public trial. Consider it dignity, for the twenty years we spent together."

"Dignity," I repeated. "You drained my retirement fund to buy your mistress a penthouse, and you demand I leave with nothing?"

"Watch your mouth, Mom," Marcus shot back. He finally looked up, his face twisted in annoyance. "Aunt Rose helped Dad close the Miller and the Davies deals this quarter. What did you do? Book a table at a restaurant? Can anniversaries buy shares?"

I looked at Marcus. The boy whose private school tuition I paid by selling my mother's jewelry when Gerald's first startup failed.

"You think he built Shaw Capital alone?" I asked Marcus.

"It's his name on the door," Marcus scoffed. "You just sit at home and spend his money. Aunt Rose actually contributes."

"Eve, it's for the best," Rose chimed in, offering a sympathetic pout. "Gerald needs a partner who understands his ambition. You've been holding him back for years."

"Holding him back," I echoed.

"You don't attend the galas anymore. You don't network," Rose said, stepping closer. "You're a housewife, Eve. Gerald is a CEO. The gap between you two is just too wide now."

Gerald checked his Rolex. "We have guests arriving in ten minutes, Evelyn. Sign the papers."

"You want me to walk away," I said to Gerald. "Just like that."

"It's a generous offer," Gerald replied. "You keep your personal car. I keep the assets. We avoid the lawyers draining the accounts. If you fight this, I promise you, you will lose. My legal team will bury you in paperwork until you can't afford rent."

I looked at the pen resting beside the documents.

My chest tightened. I remembered the first year of Shaw Capital. The cash flow dried up entirely. The banks laughed at Gerald. I quietly mortgaged my personal trust, injecting twelve million dollars into the accounts to save the firm from bankruptcy. The press release the next month praised Gerald Shaw's brilliant financial maneuvering. I never asked for credit.

I didn't argue. I didn't scream.

I picked up the pen.

"Smart choice," Gerald murmured.

I flipped to the signature line on the first page and signed my name.

"See, Mom? Was that so hard?" Marcus muttered, returning his attention to his phone.

I turned the page. Signed again.

Page after page, the scratching of the pen echoed over the low hum of the party chatter. Rose leaned her head against Gerald's shoulder, whispering something in his ear that made him smirk.

I reached the final page. My finger traced the sharp edge of the paper, resting there for half a second.

A string of digits flashed through my mind. A private LP number I had memorized two decades ago and never dialed. The true backing behind Shaw Capital. The leverage Gerald never knew I kept.

I pressed the pen down and finished the final signature.

"There," I said, dropping the pen onto the glass table.

Gerald reached for the papers, a satisfied gleam in his eye. "I'll have my legal team file these on Monday. You have until the end of the week to pack your personal belongings from the house."

Standing up, I reached into my purse. I bypassed the handwritten anniversary card and pulled out the platinum supplementary card tied directly to Gerald's primary account.

A young man in a black catering uniform walked past with a tray of empty glasses.

"Excuse me," I said, stopping him.

The caterer blinked. "Yes, ma'am?"

I placed the platinum card onto his silver tray.

"Call the concierge service on the back," I told him. "Book one first-class ticket to Vegas for tonight. Charge it all to this card."

Gerald frowned, taking a step forward. "Evelyn, what are you doing?"

The caterer pulled out a mobile card reader from his apron, swiping the platinum plastic through the slot.
