Divorced And Reborn: The Secret Heiress

The heavy glass doors of The Plaza Hotel swung open, and Amber stepped from the brisk autumn air into the opulent warmth of The Palm Court. The dazzling light from the crystal chandeliers overhead was almost blinding, forcing her to squint for a moment as her eyes adjusted.

A maître d' in a crisp tuxedo glided towards her. "Good afternoon, madam."

"I'm meeting Ms. York," Amber said, her voice steady.

He led her through the hushed, elegant space, past tables of tourists and society women enjoying afternoon tea. In a secluded corner booth, upholstered in rich velvet, sat Delma York.

She was the picture of innocence, dressed in a pristine white Chanel suit that made her look angelic. A perfectly sweet, practiced smile bloomed on her face as Amber approached.

Sitting beside her was Brooke Stone, one of Delma's society sycophants. Brooke's eyes, small and sharp, immediately began a critical inventory of Amber's simple, off-the-rack trench coat.

Amber ignored her, pulling out the chair opposite Delma and sitting down. She kept her back perfectly straight, a silent armor against the condescension in the air. She didn't order anything.

"I'm surprised you came," Brooke said, her voice loud enough for the nearby tables to hear. "I'd imagine the minimum charge here is more than some people's monthly grocery budget."

Amber picked up the glass of lemon water the waiter had placed before her and took a small, deliberate sip. She set it down without a sound.

"It's a common misconception among the newly rich," Amber replied, her tone light and conversational, though her eyes were chips of ice. "Thinking that price is a substitute for taste."

Brooke's face flushed a blotchy, furious red. She opened her mouth to retort, but Delma placed a gentle, manicured hand on her arm, silencing her.

"Brooke, please," Delma sighed, her expression a mask of gentle apology. She then turned to Amber, her blue eyes wide and seemingly sincere. "Amber, I'm so sorry. I just wanted to talk."

She reached into her Hermès handbag and pulled out a checkbook and a pen. With a flourish, she wrote something, tore the check from the book, and slid it across the table.

It was made out to Amber Hayes. The amount was five million dollars.

"I know things have been difficult for you," Delma said, her voice dripping with faux sympathy. "With your brother's illness... and everything else. This should be enough for you and him to leave New York. To start over somewhere else, quietly."

Amber looked at the check, at the neat, looping signature. She didn't touch it. A cold, dangerous light flickered in the depths of her eyes. This wasn't an offer; it was an insult. A dismissal. A price tag on her dignity.

She slowly raised her gaze from the check to Delma's face, holding her stare until Delma's perfect smile began to falter.

"Five million dollars," Amber said, her voice quiet but carrying an edge that cut through the genteel murmur of the restaurant. "Is that the going rate for the life I saved on that ski slope in Aspen?"

The mention of the past made Delma flinch. The mask of innocence cracked, and a flicker of genuine fear showed in her eyes before she quickly suppressed it.

Amber leaned forward slightly, her hands clasped on the table. The shift in her posture was subtle, but it completely changed the power dynamic. Suddenly, she was the one in control. "Let's be clear, Delma. I am leaving Donavan. But not because of you, and certainly not for your money."

She paused, letting the words hang in the air. "I'm leaving him because he's no longer of any use to me."

The statement hit its mark. It was a direct assault on Delma's entire worldview, in which Donavan was a god to be worshipped, not a tool to be discarded.

Delma's face, which had been a carefully constructed portrait of sweetness, twisted into an ugly snarl. The facade crumbled completely. "You're a liar," she hissed, her voice sharp and venomous. "A shameless, grasping nobody."

Amber stood up, looking down at the woman who had stolen her life. She felt nothing but a cold, weary contempt.

She picked up her glass of ice water. Without a word, she tilted it, pouring the entire contents over the five-million-dollar check. The ink bled instantly, blurring the numbers and the name into a meaningless, watery mess.

Brooke shrieked and jumped back, trying to protect her designer dress from the splash.

Amber calmly placed the empty glass back on the table and smoothed the front of her trench coat. "You should pray, Delma," she said, her voice low and chilling. "Pray that the secrets of the past stay buried. Because if they don't, five million dollars won't even begin to cover the cost."

With that, she turned and walked away, her steps confident and unhurried as she moved towards the exit.

Behind her, she heard a furious scrape of a chair. "You bitch!"

Delma, blinded by rage, had scrambled to her feet to chase after her. But in her haste, the heel of her expensive stiletto caught on the leg of a nearby service cart.

A strangled cry, a clatter of falling silverware, and then a sickening thud.

Amber stopped and turned around.

Delma York was sprawled on the polished marble floor, amidst a mess of scattered pastries and broken china.
