Bound by blood and betrayal

I had learned long ago that Lorenzo didn’t like noise. He didn’t like problems, especially ones that made him look weak. But he loved control. And I had become just another thing for him to control.

For years, I played my part, the silent wife who didn’t ask questions, who didn’t make waves. I stayed quiet, kept to myself, and did everything he expected of me.

But now, I was planning. Planning to leave. And I knew I had to do it quietly.

I started by liquidating what I could. Things Lorenzo didn’t keep track of. Small things. My old jewelry. Some items of value I had kept hidden for years. He never paid attention to them. The rest of the world did, but he didn’t.

Each item I sold, each dollar I tucked away, felt like a small victory. I wasn’t just a pawn anymore.

But there was one thing I needed that I couldn’t get without drawing attention: money. I didn’t have enough for everything. I needed a bigger plan.

I watched him from the other side of the room that night. He was on his phone, staring at the screen, half-listening to Sienna as she spoke to him. She always had a way of pulling his attention. A way of making him laugh when I couldn’t.

It burned. But I kept my face blank.

“I’ll need you to take care of this,” she was saying, her voice as smooth as silk. “Laura’s getting too bold. It’s getting dangerous, Lorenzo.”

I clenched my fists behind my back.

Lorenzo didn’t answer right away. He was always so slow to respond when he was distracted.

“I’ll take care of it,” he said eventually, not looking up. “But don’t bring it to me unless it’s urgent.”

Sienna smiled. I could see her leaning in toward him, her voice dropping lower. She was saying something I couldn’t hear, but it didn’t matter. I knew what she was doing.

She wasn’t worried. She was trying to pull him away from me, trying to separate us even more than he already had.

I knew it.

And I hated her for it.

But I kept my eyes on Lorenzo. He wouldn’t look at me. Not yet. I wasn’t important enough.

But I could see it. That little flicker of irritation in his eyes. The annoyance that I wasn’t just obedient. The resentment that I had started to think for myself.

I had reached the point where I didn’t care anymore.

The next morning, everything changed.

I was in the kitchen, quietly preparing breakfast when I heard it.

“Where is it, Laura?” Sienna’s voice, sharp and accusing.

I froze.

I knew exactly what she was talking about.

There was something missing. A valuable piece of jewelry that had been passed down through Lorenzo’s family for generations. I hadn’t touched it, but Sienna was too desperate to make her point.

“Where is the necklace?” she demanded again, her tone getting colder.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, my voice calm, but my heart was hammering.

She stepped closer. Her eyes were burning with accusation. “Don’t lie to me. You took it. You’re always sneaking around. Always hiding something.”

I had to bite my lip to keep from showing the fear I felt inside. This was her plan. To set me up.

But I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction.

“I haven’t touched it,” I repeated. “Why don’t you ask your precious Lorenzo?”

Sienna’s eyes widened for a split second. Then she smiled that cold, cruel smile.

“Lorenzo knows what’s going on,” she said, her voice dripping with malice. “He’ll believe me over you. You’re nothing, Laura. You’re just a little problem he’s too tired to deal with. A thing to toss aside.”

I felt the weight of her words press down on me, but I didn’t let her see it. I stood my ground.

“No,” I said firmly. “I’m not the one who’s stealing. You are.”

Her face twisted with anger. “What did you say?”

“You heard me.” I took a step closer to her, meeting her gaze head-on. “You’re the one who’s been taking things from this house. You’ve been lying to Lorenzo for months. And I’m done.”

Sienna opened her mouth to speak, but I held up a hand. “Don’t bother. I’m not interested in your lies anymore.”

I turned and walked toward the door, my heart racing. I had to get to Lorenzo before she could twist the story. I had to make sure he knew what was really happening.

But before I could leave, I heard her voice, sharp and cutting.

“You think you can just turn things around on me, Laura?”

I turned back to face her. “I’m not turning anything around. You’re the one who’s been pretending. You’re the one who’s been lying.”

“I’ll make sure Lorenzo knows who the real problem is,” she hissed.

I didn’t flinch. I just walked out the door, heading toward Lorenzo’s office. I knew I had to get there before she did.

Lorenzo wasn’t happy to see me. He never was. But this time, I didn’t care. I wasn’t going to let her control the narrative.

“I don’t have time for your drama, Laura,” he said, his voice cold as he looked up from his desk.

“I’m not here for drama,” I said quietly, my voice steady. “I’m here because you need to know what’s really going on.”

He raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair. “What are you talking about?”

“Sienna’s been stealing from you,” I said bluntly. “She’s been taking things from the house for months. And now she’s trying to frame me for it.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t like the sound of that. But I could see the skepticism in his eyes. He didn’t believe me.

“Prove it,” he said flatly.

I didn’t hesitate. “Ask her to show you the necklace.”

Lorenzo didn’t say anything, but I saw the flicker of doubt in his eyes.

He stood up abruptly and walked out of the office, heading toward the living room.

I stayed behind, waiting. My heart was pounding in my chest, but I couldn’t show it. I couldn’t let him see my fear.

A few minutes later, Lorenzo returned, his face livid.

“She tried to blame you, didn’t she?” I said quietly.

He looked at me, his eyes hard. “She can be a handful sometimes, Laura. But now—you are the one causing drama.”

The words hit me like a slap in the face.

“You’re blaming me?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

“I’m done with this,” Lorenzo said, shaking his head. “If you can’t keep things quiet, then maybe you need to leave.”

I stood frozen, unable to believe what I was hearing.

He wasn’t even angry with Sienna. He was angry with me.

I had finally seen it. He would never stand by me.

And I knew, in that moment, I had no choice but to leave.

I had to leave.

No matter what.
