🐺 CHAPTER SIXTEEN - The First Moon Sign
Lyra woke to the sound of her own heartbeat-loud, uneven, echoing like drums inside her skull. The sanctuary was dim, the early morning mist curling lazily around the entrance of the cave. Kael sat nearby, sharpening his blade, but his eyes were on her the moment she stirred.
"You're awake," he said softly.
Lyra nodded, pushing herself upright. "Something feels... wrong."
Kael's expression tightened. "Your mark?"
She pulled her shirt aside and froze.
The mark wasn't glowing this time.
It was spreading.
Silver veins branched across her shoulder and down her arm like moonlit roots. They shimmered faintly, pulsing in rhythm with her heartbeat.
Lyra's breath hitched.
"Kael... it wasn't like this last night."
Kael was at her side instantly, his fingers grazing the glowing veins-careful, gentle, but terrified.
"This is the First Moon Sign," he whispered. "The High Alpha was right."
Lyra swallowed hard. "What does it mean?"
Kael hesitated, struggling with the truth.
"It means your body is starting its transformation. Not into a wolf... but into something our legends describe as impossible."
She looked up at him. "The Moonbound Queen."
Kael's jaw tightened at the name.
"Yes."
The weight of it pressed on her chest. She wasn't ready to be a queen. She wasn't ready to lead wolves. She wasn't even ready to face another Darkfang attack.
Suddenly a sharp pain shot through her arm. Lyra gasped, collapsing onto her knees.
"Lyra!" Kael caught her, pulling her against him as her body began to tremble violently. Her vision blurred. The silver lines on her skin blazed brighter, spreading across her collarbone, her shoulder blades, her ribs.
"It burns-Kael, it burns-!"
"I know, I know," he whispered urgently, holding her tighter. "Breathe through it. I'm right here. I'm not letting go."
Her mark throbbed, and the Oath flared to life, slamming through her veins like lightning. She felt Kael's heartbeat merge with hers, felt his power pouring into her-even though he wasn't giving it.
She was taking it.
"Lyra-stop-stop, you're drawing too much-!"
"I can't!" she cried.
The cave trembled. Cracks formed along the stones. The air thickened with raw energy, swirling like a silver storm. Lyra felt herself slipping-into darkness, into the unknown, into something vast and ancient.
Her skin glowed white-hot.
Her heartbeat synced completely with Kael's.
Her vision filled with moonlight.
And then-
Everything stopped.
Silence swallowed the cave.
Lyra collapsed forward, breathing hard, the glow fading to a soft shimmer. The silver veins remained, but dimmer-settled.
Kael held her face in his hands.
"Lyra... look at me. Are you okay? Talk to me."
She blinked slowly. "I'm... I'm okay. I think so."
Kael exhaled shakily, pressing his forehead to hers. "You scared me."
Lyra looked down at her arm again.
"This is only the first sign. What happens next?"
Kael's expression told her everything.
Fear.
Uncertainty.
Love he couldn't hide anymore.
He cupped her cheek.
"Next comes the Second Sign. The one that affects your mind."
Lyra shivered. "What does it do?"
Before Kael could answer, a howl echoed across the sanctuary-deep, familiar, and close.
Lyra's breath caught.
"That's not the High Alpha."
"No," Kael growled, standing to his feet, shifting partially as his claws formed.
"That's my brother."
Lyra froze.
"Your brother? The one who betrayed you?"
Kael's eyes burned silver.
"The one who wants you dead before the prophecy completes."
The sanctuary shook as heavy footsteps approached the cave.
The First Moon Sign was only the beginning.
And now the real battle was coming straight to them.
