Betrayal of the Husband: The Returned Wife

"Three," I murmured to the rim of my glass.

The Chelsea industrial warehouse buzzed with the frantic energy of the gallery’s autumn exhibition opening. Wealthy investors mingled under harsh track lighting, their voices echoing off the exposed brick walls. I stood near the edge of the crowd, safely cloaked in a dark green velvet dress, watching the man who had erased my existence.

Across the sprawling room, Alexander held court. He nodded politely to a tech billionaire, but his focus remained entirely divided. Or rather, anchored to my left wrist.

The silver metal flashed under the bright overhead beams. Alexander’s eyes snapped away the instant the glare hit him. He flinched, resembling a man who had just pressed his bare palm against a hot stove. He forced his attention back to the billionaire. He nodded again. He took a sip of his drink.

But the burn never lasted long enough to keep him away. Just like the first two times, his gaze inevitably dragged right back to the band on my arm.

I smoothed the heavy velvet of my skirt. The fabric felt like armor disguised as evening wear.

Time to push the needle.

I stepped away from the shadowed wall and navigated the crowded floor. I slipped past waiters carrying silver champagne trays and wealthy patrons debating the merits of oversized abstract canvases. The low hum of networking faded as I closed the distance between us.

The tech billionaire excused himself as I approached.

"The second painting in the corridor," I said, stopping a mere foot away from his chest.

Alexander stiffened. His shoulders squared, pulling the fabric of his tailored suit taut. He didn't immediately respond, simply studying my face as if searching for a crack in my composure.

"Your selection has more edge than last year," I added.

"I've always been the curator," he replied. His tone remained guarded, defensive.

"Then you've gotten bolder this year," I countered, keeping my voice perfectly level. "It's a good thing. Art buyers hate being treated like fools."

His champagne flute froze halfway to his mouth. A single muscle feathered along his jawline. I knew that exact reaction. It was the identical expression he wore across our dining table three years ago, right after I suggested matching warm terra-cotta with cool slate for our friends' living room renovations.

"Have you given people interior decoration advice before?" he asked. His voice scraped against the loud ambient noise of the warehouse, sounding hollow and unexpectedly raw.

"My ex-boyfriend was in architecture," I said, holding his intense stare.

"Architecture." Alexander repeated the word as if testing its weight. "Did you work with him?"

"I helped him with color schemes for showrooms a few times," I explained.

Alexander lowered his glass. He didn't blink. The silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating, completely ignoring the party raging around us.

"Did he appreciate the help?" Alexander asked.

"He didn't really like my taste," I continued, offering a small, empty smile. "He eventually replaced me with a girl who understood colors better than he did."

Alexander's grip tightened around the stem of his flute. "That sounds incredibly foolish of him."

"Men often are," I noted. I brought the sparkling water to my lips and took a sip. The carbonation burned the back of my throat.

"Where is he now?" Alexander pressed. "This architect."

"We almost got married," I said. "He died."

I delivered the lie with the exact same cadence as complimenting the iced Americano from the corner cafe. Flat. Unbothered. No grief. No hesitation.

Alexander shifted his weight, clearly thrown off balance by the blunt delivery. The sudden movement pulled his jacket open just a fraction.

My eyes dropped to the inside of his crisp white shirt collar.

Two small letters stitched in dark blue thread. *AH*.

My chest seized. The air vanished from my lungs, replaced by a sudden, violent vacuum. He still wore the same custom brand. He still kept the exact same daily habit. The ghost of Evelyn Morrow clung to his clothes, even as he stood in a gallery funded by her stolen money.

*You still wear that brand,* I thought, the words screaming in my head. *The habit of embroidering AH inside the collar is still there.*

Before I could open my mouth and let the accusation spill out, a heavy wave of floral perfume assaulted the space between us.

Bella materialized from the dense crowd. Her manicured hands clamped onto Alexander's arm, yanking him a half-step backward.

She flashed a smile that looked like a jagged, unsharpened knife.

"Diana," Bella chimed, her tone laced with pure poison.

She squeezed Alexander's bicep, digging her acrylic nails into the dark wool of his sleeve until the fabric puckered.

"Alexander, the gallery board members are by the bar," Bella said, her smile fixed and trembling with venom. "They want to know why you're lingering in the corner with the help."

I looked at her manicured fingers clinging to his arm.

"The second painting in the corridor is a fake," I said, loud enough for the tech billionaire to hear.

Alexander stiffened. "I curated this myself, Diana."

"Then your eye has grown as dull as your conscience," I countered. I walked to the centerpiece, pointing at a brushstroke. "L.M. uses a specific titanium white layered with linseed oil. This? This is cheap acrylic. Bella, did you think nobody would notice you replaced the original with a copy to cover your debts?"

The billionaire looked at Bella with sudden distrust. Alexander looked at me, his eyes dilated with a mix of horror and obsession.

Bella lunged at me, but I stepped aside, letting her stumble into a waiter. Red wine drenched her off-white suit.

"You look better in red, Bella," I whispered as I walked past. "It matches the blood on your hands."

I turned on my heel and walked out.

The autumn air hit my face, sharp and clean, carrying the faint scent of rain.

Behind me, I heard Bella's sharp, angry hiss and the sound of Alexander failing to answer her.
