Barren Wife? I Carry The Mafia Heirs

Valeria POV

Half an hour later, Dr. Enzo and two assistants entered through the double doors of the estate's medical wing.

They moved with a nervous haste, their faces pale and slick with a fine sheen of sweat.

I locked my eyes on the infant, who was swaddled so tightly in Serena's arms as to be immobile.

My voice cut through their anxiety as I commanded Dr. Enzo to run a comprehensive genetic and physiological screening at once.

"Are the baby's heart and lungs functioning as they should?" Carmela nervously asked the doctor.

Dr. Enzo moved to check the infant's vitals. As he began to unwrap the tight swaddling to examine the lower body, his hands suddenly went still. A flicker of profound shock crossed his professional features, but Serena's hand shot out, the coarse wool of the blanket snagging on her rings as she pulled it back over the child before anyone else could see. She quickly announced that the cardiopulmonary systems were perfectly healthy.

Serena relaxed her shoulders, letting out a breath of smug relief.

She started boasting about her rigorous pregnancy routine.

She claimed she had taken ancient folk remedies to guarantee a boy.

She even bragged about drinking Lorenzo's morning urine and club soda, wearing the grotesque admission like a medal of honor.

Lorenzo turned to me, his eyes smoldering.

"You ungrateful wretch!" he spat, and the slap was not a sharp crack but a heavy, wet thud that sent a vibration through my jawbone.

My head snapped to the side from the force of the blow.

He threw the divorce papers at my feet.

"Sign them and get out of my sight!" he demanded.

I refused to sign.

Instead, I demanded a second, immediate DNA test to be conducted here, on these premises.

Carmela watched furiously as Serena stumbled forward, her balance lost for a moment, and her hands found my shoulders, her manicured nails pressing like thorns into the fabric of my dress.

"You forged the previous documents to ruin my life!" she accused me.

She barked at Dr. Enzo to run the test right now, her voice shrill with a rising hysteria.

She threatened me in front of everyone, spitting the words in my face.

"If the results confirm Dante is the father, you will abort your pregnancy!" she said.

"You will sign the divorce papers and vanish from the Syndicate forever!"

Not a single member of the Falcone family objected to this barbaric demand; they watched with a cold, silent approval.

Isabella snorted in disgust.

She took a clumsy step, her hand reaching for my hair, but her wrist was thin and I threw her arm aside with a force that made her stumble back. Seeing my defiance, Lorenzo drew his silver-plated revolver, aiming it directly at my stomach. He used his authority as a former Capo to bark orders at the surrounding Soldiers, forcing my loyal guards to stand down. "Get her in the SUV outside the clinic doors!" he roared. Isabella grabbed my arm, dragging me under the shadow of her father's gun.

She intended to force me to a back-alley clinic for an abortion.

I fought back fiercely, kicking and thrashing against her grip, my movements hampered by the gun trained on my womb.

I refused to let them touch my unborn child.

The Falcone family coldly declared that I had insulted the greatest contributor to their bloodline.

They said I must abort my child as penance for my supposed jealousy.

A surge of maternal instinct drove me to viciously bite Isabella's arm.

I twisted around and screamed at Dr. Enzo to speak the truth-to say what he saw during the physical examination and to pull the infant's full birth medical file.

Serena ran up behind me and kicked me hard in the back.

I crashed against the SUV's heavy steel door frame.

The impact bruised my eye, sending a starburst of white-hot pain through my skull.

Dr. Enzo caught my desperate, furious gaze.

He froze in his tracks, the color draining from his face.

His conscience at last broke his silence.

He pulled up the hospital's secure medical database on his tablet, retrieving the raw diagnostic files from Serena's delivery.

He read the obstetrician's hidden notes, and his breath hitched, an audible catch of air in the quiet room.

He panicked and shouted for them to stop.

"You cannot abort her child!" he yelled.

The SUV halted with a lurch.

Lorenzo impatiently questioned the doctor's sudden outburst.

Dr. Enzo swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in terror.

He handed the glowing tablet to Lorenzo and urged him to read it before doing something unforgivable.

Lorenzo snatched it impatiently, his eyes scanning the digital text.

A second later, the blood drained from Lorenzo's face, leaving a waxy, pallid mask. His pupils shrank to pinpricks, lost in a field of white.

Carmela ripped the tablet from her husband's hands.

She glanced at it and began to shake violently, as if she had been struck by a current.

She stared at Serena in a state of stunned disbelief.

Isabella took the device next.

She froze as she read the medical notes, the blood leaving her lips.

"This is impossible," she muttered.

Serena grabbed the tablet from Isabella, her movements jerky and uncoordinated.

She laughed nervously and questioned their reactions.

She insisted she was a traditional woman and the child could only be Dante's heir.

I stepped out of the vehicle, wiping a single drop of blood from my brow.

I coldly instructed Serena to read the final line of the birth diagnostic file on the screen.

The medical file clearly stated the patient exhibited severe congenital reproductive system anomalies.

It confirmed the presence of severe bilateral cryptorchidism and a catastrophic chromosomal mutation-XXY syndrome.

In short, the child was genetically sterile, incapable of ever continuing the Falcone bloodline.

Serena's face drained of all color.

She trembled and asked Lorenzo and Carmela what this meant.

Lorenzo's face turned a dark purple with rage, the veins standing out like cords in his neck.

He turned on Serena and demanded an answer.

Serena shook her head frantically, backing away like a cornered animal.

She launched herself at me, her hands grabbing the collar of my dress.

"You altered the report to ruin my son!" she screamed.
