Chapter 1 of My Alpha Performed My Dance with My Sister—Then His Rival Put His Hands on Me

The Mating Dance was supposed to be the night Cole Mercer finally said my name in front of our Pack.

I had spent three years training my fated mate in secret, and every step he knew had been built around my body.

Then the announcer called Vanessa Lane instead.

My sister crossed the floor, put her hand in Cole's, and opened with the exact sequence I had created for him and me.

I told myself he was trapped by appearances—until Cole looked straight at me and said an Omega's scent was too distracting for close-contact competition.

Vanessa smiled and asked whether I could stay after to fix her final lift.

That was when I understood they had not only taken my place; they expected me to keep making it beautiful for them.

I closed my choreography notebook.

“If she's your partner, she can learn to move without me.”

Cole caught my arm before I reached the door.

A larger hand removed his.

Damon Black, his rival Alpha, looked at me and said, “Then dance with me.”

***

Three years ago, Cole gave me his word.

*“When the time comes for the Mating Dance, Ivy, no one else touches my hands. It’s you and me on that floor.”*

I clung to that promise through eighteen months of blistered feet, pulled hamstrings, and late nights in the studio mapping eight-counts on graph paper. Now, I stood at the perimeter of the Grand Hall, the polished oak floor gleaming under the chandeliers, my heart hammering against my ribs.

The Master of Ceremonies tapped the brass microphone at center stage. The chatter among the pack members died down to an expectant murmur.

"Representing the pack’s lead pairing for the upcoming regional showcase," the announcer boomed, "Cole Sterling."

A ripple of applause swept through the room. Cole stepped out in his crisp charcoal performance suit, his broad Alpha shoulders squared, looking every bit the champion we had spent hundreds of hours preparing him to be. He caught my eye across the floor, gave a faint nod, and looked away.

"And his partner," the voice echoed, "Vanessa Brooks."

The breath emptied out of my lungs.

My sister stepped past me, her silk skirt whispering against the velvet rope. She didn't look back. She walked out under the bright overhead lights, her smile polished and practiced, slipping her fingers straight into Cole’s waiting palm.

I stood frozen. *This is an error,* I told myself. *Someone wrote the wrong name on the roster card.*

Then the music started.

It wasn't just any track. It was the custom mix of cello and heavy percussion I had cut in my bedroom. Vanessa took four measured strides back, extended her right arm, and arched into a dramatic backbend while Cole stepped over her foot to catch her ribcage.

It was my choreography.

Every single count. Every turn of the wrist, every breath, every dynamic drop I had mapped out line by line in the black notebook tucked under my arm. They didn't miss a beat. They moved through the complex footwork with the fluid timing that only came from weeks of secret rehearsal behind my back.

A sharp hum rang in my ears. I didn't wait for them to finish the sequence.

Before the final spin died down, the hall erupted in applause. Cole guided Vanessa through an elegant curtsey, their chests heaving slightly in sync. As the crowd’s cheering tapered off into social chatter, I stepped through the ropes and walked straight toward the center of the floor.

"Cole," I said.

My voice was quiet, but it cut through the lingering music.

Cole turned. The triumphant glow on his face flickered for half a second before his features smoothed into cool authority.

"Ivy," he said, keeping his tone light. "You saw the opening. The line held together well, didn't it?"

"Why is she on the roster?" I asked, looking between him and my sister. "Why is she performing my routine?"

Vanessa adjusted the strap of her dress, her expression entirely unbothered. "Don't cause a scene, Ivy. Everyone is watching."

"I asked Cole a question." I kept my eyes locked on him. "Three years, Cole. You promised me."

Cole sighed, taking a step forward to lower his voice, though several nearby pack elders were already turning their heads to listen.

"We had to make an executive decision for the good of the pack's standing," Cole said smoothly. "An Omega’s scent interferes with an Alpha’s judgment during close-contact partnering. In high-stakes lifts, any sudden spike in pheromones could throw off my balance. Vanessa is a Beta. Her scent is neutral. It keeps the execution clean and predictable."

The words landed like ice water down my spine.

"My scent?" I repeated, my knuckles turning white around the spine of my notebook. "You spent eighteen months letting me design every inch of this set around your strengths. You never had an issue with my scent when you needed someone to drill you through midnight sets."

"That was training," Cole dismissed, shifting his weight. "Competition is different. The judges deduct points for erratic execution. You should understand that better than anyone."

Vanessa stepped up beside him, slipping an arm through his elbow. She smiled at me, that patronizing, elder-sister smile she had perfected since childhood.

"You're taking this so personally, sweetie," Vanessa said. "Nobody is discounting your contribution. In fact, you're still our anchor. Can you stay after the hall clears tonight? That final overhead press Cole and I just ran felt sticky on the landing. You need to adjust my hand placement so the dismount looks effortless."

She said it without a shred of shame.

They hadn't just replaced me. They expected me to stand on the sidelines, watch them claim the glory of my work, and quietly patch their mistakes so they looked flawless under the spotlight. They thought I would swallow the humiliation just to stay near them.

The hum in my ears went silent, replaced by a cold, absolute calm.

"Your hand placement isn't sticky," I said evenly.

Vanessa blinked, clearly surprised I wasn't weeping. "What?"

"You're dropping your left elbow on the pivot," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "And your core is soft. If you hit that lift at full speed in front of regional judges, he'll drop you flat on your back."

Cole’s brow furrowed. "Then show her how to fix it."

I looked down at the black leather notebook in my hands. The pages were dog-eared, filled with pencil markings, timing charts, and transition notes written in my handwriting.

I snapped it shut. The crack of leather against paper sounded like a gunshot in the quiet circle around us.

"If she's your partner," I said, "she can learn to move without me."

I turned on my heel and walked toward the exit.

Cole’s composure shattered. "Ivy! Wait."

Footsteps hurried behind me. A heavy hand gripped my upper arm, his Alpha strength flaring just enough to make the skin bruise.

"Stop walking away," Cole snapped, his voice dropping into a harsh rasp. "You don't just walk out on the squad. We need that final sequence polished by Friday. Stop acting like a child and do your job."

I looked down at his fingers clamped around my arm, then looked up into his face. For three years, I had believed his approval was something I needed to earn. Looking at him now, I only felt disgust.

I ripped my arm out of his grasp with all the force in my body.

"I don't have a job here," I told him, loud enough for half the ballroom to hear. "I don't belong to your squad, I'm not your backstage technician, and starting right now, I am never coaching either of you on a single step again."

Cole froze, his mouth parting in genuine shock. He had never heard me raise my voice, let alone defy him in front of the pack. Vanessa took an uneasy step forward, but I didn't give them another second.

I grabbed my satin dance shoes off the equipment bench by the door and shoved through the heavy double doors into the corridor.

The cool air of the empty hallway hit my heated skin. My chest heaved, adrenaline surging through my limbs so hard that my fingers trembled against the ribbons of my shoes. I took three fast strides toward the outer exit, blind with fury.

I didn't see the figure stepping out from the shadow of the side stairwell until it was too late.

I crashed hard into a broad, unyielding chest.

The impact knocked the breath out of me, and my shoes slipped from my grip. Before they hit the floor, a large, calloused hand snatched the satin ribbons out of the air.

I stumbled back, my hands coming up defensively. "I'm sorry, I wasn't—"

The words died in my throat.

Damon Black stood before me.

He was the last person who should have been standing in this corridor. Towering, dark-haired, and lethal, he was Cole’s fiercest rival—and the Alpha Cole despised most in the entire territory. Damon had been sidelined from training ten days ago after a brutal border skirmish, his right shoulder visibly bound in heavy medical tape beneath his unbuttoned black jacket.

His dark eyes assessed my flushed face, the wild state of my hair, and the faint red mark Cole's grip had left on my arm.

Slowly, Damon lowered his gaze to the pink satin shoes hanging from his fingers.

"You're done dancing with Sterling," Damon said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that resonated through the quiet hallway.

"I'm done," I choked out, my voice raw.

Damon stepped closer, closing the distance between us until the dark, sharp scent of cedar and smoke filled the space between us. He held out my shoes, his gaze burning directly into mine.

"Then dance with me."
