I Left My Family Behind, Now Their Heiress Has a Billionaire Husband

The Takeda welcome banquet started at eight.

By eight-fifteen, I saw the Sterlings walk in.

"Your father moves fast," Damian murmured, handing me a glass of champagne.

"He's had three years of practice chasing this deal." I didn't take a sip. "He won't stop now."

Richard came in first, smiling at people who weren't smiling back. Ethan followed. Then Julian.

And on Julian's arm, in pale silver silk, was Sophia.

My fingers tightened around the stem of the glass.

Damian noticed. He always noticed. "That's her?"

"That's her."

She looked the same. Big doe eyes. Soft voice. The kind of girl strangers wanted to protect on sight.

I had been one of those strangers once. At sixteen, when Father brought her home after the car accident that killed her parents, I gave her my room with the bay window. I gave her my clothes. I taught her how to hold a fork at a formal dinner so the other girls wouldn't laugh.

She learned fast.

Too fast.

---

The night of my engagement party, I wore a champagne gown with hand-stitched pearls along the neckline. I'd designed it myself. Three fittings. Two months of waiting.

Then Sophia walked down the grand staircase in the exact same dress.

Same pearls. Same color. Same cut.

The room went silent. Two hundred guests turned their heads from her to me and back again.

And Sophia burst into tears.

"I didn't know," she sobbed, pressing her hands over her face. "I swear, Bella, I saw a picture and thought it was pretty. I didn't know it was yours. I'll go change. I'm so sorry."

"You saw a picture?" I asked. "The sketches were locked in my desk."

Her shoulders shook harder.

My father was beside her in three strides. He wrapped an arm around her, then turned on me.

"Isabella. You're the older sister. Would it kill you to let her have this one time?"

"It's my engagement party, Father."

"And she's already embarrassed. Look at her."

I did look at her. Through her fingers, just for a second, her eyes met mine.

They were dry.

I turned to Julian. My fiancé. The man whose name I was about to take.

"Julian. Say something."

He hesitated. Then he stepped past me, took Sophia's trembling hand in both of his, and squeezed it.

"Hey. Don't cry," he said gently. "Nobody's angry with you. It's just a dress."

Just a dress.

I stood in the middle of my own party, and every single person I loved stood on her side of the room.

That was the moment I knew.

It didn't matter what I said. It didn't matter what I did. They would choose her. Every time.

---

The board meeting happened six weeks later.

Sophia had applied for a junior VP role at Sterling Group. She had no experience. No degree in finance. I voted no, and I said why, calmly, with numbers.

That night, she went to Julian.

I never heard what she told him. I only heard what he said the next morning, in the lobby of Sterling Tower, in front of half the executive floor.

"You humiliated her." His voice bounced off the marble. "She told me everything. You stood up in front of the whole board and called her a charity case."

"That's not what happened."

"So she's lying?"

"Ask anyone who was in the room. Ask the minutes. It's all recorded."

"I don't need to ask anyone." He looked at me like I was something stuck to his shoe. "I know you, Isabella. You've been jealous of her since the day she moved in. You'd do anything to keep her out."

People had stopped walking. Someone's phone was up.

Something inside me went very quiet.

I slipped the diamond off my finger. I walked to the reception counter and set it down on the cold marble.

"Julian," I said. "We're canceling the engagement."

He stared at the ring. Then he laughed. A short, ugly sound.

"Fine. Go ahead." He leaned closer. "You'll regret this."

I didn't regret it.

Not for one day.

---

"Bella?"

Damian's voice brought me back. His thumb brushed the inside of my wrist.

"I'm fine," I said.

"You went somewhere."

"Just five years back." I set the champagne down. "It's not as interesting as it sounds."

Across the room, Sophia had spotted me.

I watched it happen. Her smile froze. Her hand slid off Julian's arm. Her eyes went from me, to the Takeda chairman standing two feet away from me, to the man at my side.

Then they stayed on Damian.

Ethan leaned in and said something to her. Probably his name. Probably the word *husband*.

Sophia's face changed.

I knew that look. It was the look of a girl who'd spent five years building a house out of other people's guilt, and just heard the first wall crack.

Because she knew. If I ever walked back into Sterling Group, people would start checking the numbers. The missing funds. The contracts that went to her friends. The stories she'd told about me that nobody had bothered to prove.

And Julian...

Julian wasn't looking at her at all.

He was looking at me. He'd been looking at me since he walked in.

Sophia noticed that too. Her lips pressed into a thin line.

Then she lifted her chin, fixed her smile back in place, and steered Julian across the floor until they were close enough for me to smell her perfume. The same one I used to wear.

She tilted her face up toward Julian and spoke softly. Too softly to be private. Just loud enough to travel.

"My sister hasn't changed at all," she sighed. "She still loves taking things that aren't hers."

A woman nearby turned her head. Then another.

Julian's mouth opened. Nothing came out.

I didn't move. Five years ago, I would have defended myself. I would have explained. I would have begged someone to believe me.

Now I just waited.

Damian turned.

He didn't rush it. He looked at Sophia the way a man might look at a smudge on a window. Brief. Unbothered.

"My wife," he said, "doesn't need to take anything from anyone."

He paused.

"Everything she has, she built."

The words weren't loud. They didn't have to be.

The Takeda chairman chuckled under his breath. Someone behind us whispered *Aurelian Holdings*. Someone else whispered *Blackwood*.

The color left Sophia's face in one long drain, from her cheeks down to her throat. Her fingers dug into Julian's sleeve.

"I... I only meant..."

"I know exactly what you meant," Damian said. Then he turned his back on her, like she'd stopped existing.

All around us, people were staring.

At the girl in silver, shaking.

And at me. The woman they'd once pushed out the door. Standing beside the chairman of Takeda Group. Standing beside a man none of them could reach.

Standing somewhere they would never climb.

Sophia's eyes found mine. For the first time in eleven years, she didn't bother to fake the tears.

She just looked scared.

Then her gaze slid past me, toward the ballroom doors, and something sharp and desperate flashed across her face.

Like she'd just remembered she had one card left to play.
