After sharing half of my husband with his mistress

"You look exhausted," Bruce said. He poured a cup of black coffee and leaned against the granite counter.

"I didn't sleep."

"Why not? Are you feeling sick?"

I tossed my phone onto the glass dining table. It slid across the smooth surface and stopped right in front of his coffee mug. The screen was lit up.

Bruce glanced down. His hand froze mid-air.

The photo showed him pressed against Judy on the hood of his Mercedes.

"Care to explain?" I asked.

Bruce didn't yell. He didn't throw the phone. His shoulders slumped, and the color drained from his face.

"Iris," he whispered.

"You told me she was a charity case. You told me you were protecting your productivity."

He rounded the table and dropped into the chair beside me. He grabbed my hands. I tried to yank them away, but his grip tightened.

"It was a mistake," he pleaded, his voice cracking. "A stupid, meaningless mistake."

"You fucked her in a driveway, Bruce."

"I know. I know how it looks."

"It looks exactly like what it is. It looks like you are funding a mistress with our money."

He shook his head frantically. "No. It's over. I swear to you, Iris. I only went over there yesterday to cut ties. She was crying. I felt pity for her. I lost my mind for ten minutes. That's all it was."

I stared at his panicked eyes. "Ten minutes of pity? You ripped her clothes off outside."

"I was weak! But I chose you. I came home to you."

"You came home smelling like cheap lotion and tried to touch me."

"I am sorry," he begged, dropping his forehead against my knuckles. "I am so damn sorry. I will do whatever it takes to make this right."

He grabbed his own phone from his pocket. He unlocked it, opened his contacts, and shoved the screen toward me.

"Watch," he demanded.

He swiped over Judy’s name and hit delete. Then he blocked her number.

"She is gone," Bruce said. "I am done being a fool. I will stay home. I will fix this. Just give me a chance to prove I love you."

I looked at the empty contact list. Three years of marriage. A massive house. A life built together.

"One chance," I muttered.

For the next five days, Bruce became a ghost of his former self. He didn't drive to the corporate towers. He didn't take the Mercedes out of the garage.

"Try this," he said on Tuesday evening.

He held out a wooden spoon. Tomato sauce dripped from the edge.

I leaned over the kitchen island and tasted it. "It's good."

"Just like our honeymoon in Rome," he smiled, wiping a spot of sauce from my chin. "Movie night tonight? You pick."

"Okay."

"I told the board I am taking a leave of absence," Bruce added, setting the spoon down on a napkin. "I want to focus entirely on us."

"You stepped away from the company?"

"My wife is more important than a quarterly report," he said smoothly. He kissed my forehead and turned back to the stove.

The next afternoon, Mia found me in the garden. She clipped a dead rose from a bush and tossed it into a wicker basket.

"He canceled a merger meeting yesterday," she noted.

"I know."

"He is trying, Iris. You should recognize effort when you see it."

"He cheated on me, Mia."

She snipped another stem. The shears made a sharp, metallic snap.

"And he apologized. He is cooking dinner. He is acting like a devoted husband. A smart wife accepts the victory and moves forward. Stop punishing him."

"I'm not punishing him. I'm surviving."

"Survive quietly, then," she replied, walking away.

I wanted to believe the nightmare was over. I wanted to believe three years of marriage wasn't just a beautifully decorated lie. But the cracks showed at night.

On Thursday, I woke up at two in the morning. The space beside me in the king-sized bed was empty. The sheets were cold.

I pushed the blankets aside and walked into the hallway.

A faint sliver of light spilled from beneath the study door.

I crept closer.

"You know that is impossible," Bruce whispered. His voice was muffled through the heavy wood.

I pushed the door open an inch.

Bruce spun around. He slammed his phone face-down on the mahogany desk. His eyes went wide.

"Iris. What are you doing up?"

"Who were you talking to?" I asked, stepping into the room.

"Just a regional manager. We have a crisis in the London office."

"At two in the morning?"

"Time zones," he forced a laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Go back to bed, sweetheart. I'll be right there."

I stared at the phone. "Show me the call log."

His jaw tightened. "Are we really doing this? I thought we were moving past this."

"Show me."

He picked up the phone, tapped the screen, and held it up.

*Incoming Call: London Office.*

"See?" he asked. "You need to trust me, Iris."

I turned around and walked back to the bedroom. I didn't believe him. The tension in his shoulders told a different story.

Friday night.

The digital clock on the nightstand read 3:14 AM.

Bruce slipped out of bed again. He didn't bother putting on his slippers. He just grabbed his phone and moved silently out of the room.

I waited thirty seconds. Then I followed.

The hallway was pitch black. I pressed my bare feet onto the edges of the carpet to avoid making a sound.

He didn't go to the study this time. He went to the guest room at the end of the hall. The door was cracked open just enough for his voice to slip through.

I pressed my shoulder against the wall and listened.

"Stop crying," Bruce said. His tone wasn't corporate. It wasn't pitying. It was entirely desperate.

Silence from the other end.

"I know it's hard," Bruce continued. "But you have to bear with it a little longer."

My chest tightened.

"I am handling Iris," he said. "She bought the apology. She thinks I'm working from home to fix the marriage."

My nails dug into the drywall.

"Just keep your head down," Bruce ordered. "Once the baby is born, I will absolutely give you and the child a proper status. You will get everything."

The floor vanished beneath me.

Baby.

Judy was pregnant.

My husband wasn't just hiding an affair. He was hiding an entire second family. He was stalling for time until his mistress gave birth.

I raised my hand to push the door open. I wanted to scream. I wanted to tear the phone from his hands and smash it against the wall.

*CRASH.*

A heavy thud echoed from inside the room. Something shattered against the hardwood floor.

"Judy?" Bruce yelled. His voice spiked with pure panic. "Judy, answer me!"

I froze.

"Fuck!" Bruce shouted.

He ripped the door open, nearly knocking me over.

He didn't even look at me. His face was completely pale, eyes blown wide with terror. He sprinted past me down the hall.

"Bruce!" I shouted.

He ignored me.

I looked down at the floor where he had been standing. His phone lay face-up on the carpet, dropped in his frantic rush to leave.

The screen glowed brightly in the dim hallway.

It was ringing again.

The caller ID flashed in bold white letters: *City General Hospital - Emergency Dept.*
