After My Mate Rejected Me, the Lycan Prince Protected Me

I was sharpening my blades when Tristan walked through the door.

The scrape of steel on whetstone stopped mid-stroke. My hand froze. The scent hit first — Silverfang Alpha musk, thick and possessive, cutting through the neutral air of the lodge like a claim being staked.

I didn't look up. I kept my eyes on the blade.

But I heard him. The deliberate footsteps. The pause just inside the doorway, long enough for every wolf in the common room to register his presence and lower their eyes.

Sera, sitting across from me with a half-eaten sandwich, went very still.

"Hadley."

Tristan's voice carried easily. Not loud. He didn't need loud. He had Alpha tone threaded through every syllable, designed to compel attention.

I set the blade down. Slowly. Then I looked up.

He stood in the center of the room, flanked by two Silverfang warriors I recognized from border patrol rotations. Both of them looked uncomfortable. Tristan looked calm. Confident. Like he'd already won whatever game he thought we were playing.

Behind him, human guests at the bar went quiet. A rogue near the fireplace shifted his weight and didn't meet anyone's eyes.

"You shouldn't be here," I said.

Tristan smiled. It didn't reach his eyes. "You left without filing your patrol report. I came to collect it."

Liar.

I could smell the lie underneath his words — faint, sour, threaded through the dominant Alpha musk like rot under perfume.

"I'm not coming back," I said.

"I'm not asking you to come back as my mate." He took three steps forward. The warriors stayed by the door. "I'm offering you a position. Kept she-wolf. It's a legitimate rank under pack provision. You'd have protection, resources, a place in the hierarchy."

The words landed like stones.

Kept she-wolf.

Technically legal. Functionally indistinguishable from ownership.

I stood. The chair scraped against the floor. "Get out."

Tristan's expression didn't change. "You're unaffiliated now, Hadley. No pack. No bond. No wolf." He paused. "How long do you think you'll last out here?"

My wolf stirred. Faint. Barely there. But present.

I didn't answer.

Tristan's eyes narrowed. Then his posture shifted — shoulders back, chin lifted — and I felt it before he spoke.

The pull.

The residual bond thread, severed but not dissolved, because I'd never formally accepted the rejection. It was a technicality. A legal loophole. And Tristan was about to weaponize it.

"Come here," he said.

Alpha tone. Full force. Threaded through the bond remnant like a leash I couldn't see.

My body responded before my mind did.

My muscles locked. My spine straightened. My wolf whimpered — a sound only I could hear — and my legs started to move.

One step.

I stopped.

The compulsion rolled through me like a wave hitting a seawall. My jaw clenched. My hands shook. Every instinct I had screamed at me to obey, to move, to close the distance between us because an Alpha had commanded it and the bond thread was still live enough to carry the order.

I did not move.

Tristan's eyes widened. Just slightly. "Hadley. Come. Here."

The second command hit harder. My knees buckled. I caught myself on the edge of the table, breathing hard, vision blurring.

But I did not take another step.

The room was silent. Every wolf stared. The human guests looked confused. Sera's hand was on her knife.

No one had ever seen a she-wolf resist a bond-thread Alpha command.

Tristan's face darkened. He opened his mouth to issue the command a third time—

And Vincent Pierce stepped between us.

I didn't hear him approach. I didn't see him move. One moment the space was empty. The next, Vincent stood directly in Tristan's line of sight, his back to me, his posture loose and unhurried.

The scent of cedar and smoke wrapped around me like armor.

"You're done," Vincent said quietly.

Tristan's Alpha tone flattened mid-syllable. The compulsion pulling at my spine snapped like a cut wire. I gasped, stumbled, caught myself.

Vincent didn't raise his voice. He didn't move. But the air in the room changed.

His Lycan aura unfolded.

Not dramatically. Not violently. Just—there. Absolute. Bone-deep. A power that existed on a level Tristan's Alpha status couldn't reach, couldn't challenge, couldn't comprehend.

Tristan took an involuntary step backward. His two warriors did the same, their eyes wide, their wolves submitting before their minds caught up.

"I am invoking formal Lycan protection over Hadley Reed," Vincent said. His voice was cold, precise, unhurried. "Under the authority of the Lycan Crown, no pack Alpha may issue command, claim territory over, or attempt coercion of the named individual. Violation will result in Council tribunal and immediate forfeiture of title."

Silence.

Tristan stared at him. His face moved through rage, disbelief, and something that looked, for the first time, like genuine fear.

"You can't—"

"I already have," Vincent said. "Leave."

Tristan's jaw worked. His hands clenched. For three seconds, I thought he might actually try to fight.

Then he turned and walked out. His warriors followed. The door slammed behind them.

The room exhaled.

I was still shaking. The residual compulsion tremors ran through my arms, my legs, my chest. I braced myself against the table and tried to breathe.

Vincent turned.

I looked up at him. "I didn't ask for your protection."

"No," he said. "You didn't."

"Then why—"

"Because what he just did was a legal abuse of a bond thread that should have dissolved the moment he issued the rejection vow." Vincent's voice was calm. Exact. "The decree is not a favor, Hadley. It's a correction."

I stared at him. My pulse was still racing. My wolf was still trembling.

"I don't need you to save me," I said.

Vincent held my gaze. "I know."

Then he turned and walked away, leaving me standing in the middle of the common room with every wolf in the lodge staring and the warmth of his scent still wrapped around my shoulders like a shield I hadn't asked for but couldn't quite bring myself to shed.
