After My Mate Rejected Me, the Lycan Prince Claimed Me

I didn't go back to my quarters right away. I couldn't. The council chamber's cold stone had left bruises on my knees, and my throat still ached from the Alpha command that had locked around it like iron. I walked through the pack house hallways in a daze, my healer's tunic—the one I was supposed to surrender—still on my body because no one had actually taken it yet. Maybe they thought I'd do it myself. Hand it over quietly, like I'd done everything else.

The mind-link was still buzzing. Quieter now, but persistent. Wolves I'd healed, wolves I'd saved, wolves whose children I'd delivered—all of them agreeing that I was dangerous. That the council had been right. That Nolan had shown mercy by not exiling me on the spot.

I reached my quarters just after sunset. The door was ajar.

That's when I smelled them. My family. My mother's lavender soap, my father's tobacco, my brother's cheap cologne. They were inside, waiting.

I pushed the door open slowly.

My mother sat on my bed, her hands folded in her lap. She wore a blue dress I recognized from pack events—the one she saved for when she wanted to look respectable. My father stood by the window, his arms crossed. My brother, Daniel, leaned against the wall near the door, blocking the exit.

None of them looked worried. Or sad. Or even angry.

They looked irritated.

"Clara." My mother's voice was soft. Controlled. The tone she used when she was about to ask me to do something I didn't want to do. "Sit down. We need to talk."

I stayed standing. "What are you doing here?"

"We heard what happened at the council," my father said. His voice was gruff. Impatient. "The whole pack heard."

"Then you know I didn't do it." I looked at each of them. "You know I would never—"

"It doesn't matter what you did or didn't do," Daniel cut me off. He pushed away from the wall, his eyes hard. "What matters is what everyone thinks you did."

I stared at him. "That's not—"

"You need to fix this," my mother said. She stood, smoothing her dress. "Go to the Alpha. Apologize. Beg his forgiveness. Accept whatever punishment he decides. Show the pack you're remorseful."

The words didn't land right at first. I heard them, but they felt distant. Unreal.

"You want me to apologize," I said slowly, "for something I didn't do."

"We want you to protect this family." My father's voice was sharp now. "Do you have any idea what your scandal has done to our standing? Wolves are already questioning our judgment. Our loyalty. If you don't make this right, we'll lose everything."

"Everything," I repeated. My voice sounded hollow. "You mean your rank. Your access to the Alpha. Your invitations to pack events."

My mother's face tightened. "Don't be selfish, Clara. This isn't just about you."

"It was never about me." The words came out quieter than I meant them to. "Was it?"

Daniel stepped closer. "You've always been difficult. Always had to make things complicated. But this?" He shook his head. "You're going to ruin us because you're too proud to admit you made a mistake?"

"I didn't make a mistake." My hands curled into fists at my sides. "Briana lied. She forged those records. And Nolan—" My voice cracked. "He used his Alpha tone on me. He wouldn't let me speak. He wouldn't even look at me."

"Because you gave him no choice," my father said. "You embarrassed him in front of the council. In front of visiting Alphas. What did you expect him to do?"

I looked at him. At the man who had raised me. Who had walked me to my first healer training session. Who had told me once, when I was young and scared, that I could be anything I wanted.

"I expected him to defend me," I whispered. "I'm his mate."

The room went very still.

My mother's eyes widened. Just slightly. Just enough.

She knew. She had always known.

"That mark," she said quietly, her gaze dropping to my neck, "was supposed to be an advantage. A connection to the Alpha bloodline. A way to secure our family's future."

"I'm not a connection," I said. My voice was shaking now. "I'm a person."

"You're a Davis," my father said. "And you have a responsibility to this family. To the wolves who share your blood."

"Then where were you?" The words burst out of me, raw and jagged. "Where were you when the council stripped my rank? When the entire pack called me a murderer? When Nolan silenced me with a command and I couldn't even defend myself?"

None of them answered.

"You weren't there," I said. "Because it was easier to wait. To see which way the wind blew. To make sure you were on the winning side."

My mother's face hardened. "We are trying to protect you."

"No." I shook my head. "You're trying to protect yourselves."

Daniel moved toward me, his hand reaching for my arm. "You need to stop being dramatic and—"

I stepped back. "Don't touch me."

He froze. Something in my voice made him stop.

"You should be grateful," he said slowly, "that anyone marked you at all. You're not special, Clara. You're not irreplaceable. And if you keep acting like this, you'll end up with nothing."

I looked at him. At all of them.

And I realized, with a cold, clear certainty, that I already had nothing. Because the people standing in front of me—the people who were supposed to love me, protect me, fight for me—had never seen me as anything more than a tool.

A way to climb higher.

A bridge to better rank.

A currency they could spend.

"Get out," I said quietly.

My mother blinked. "Clara—"

"Get out of my quarters. Now."

My father's jaw tightened. "You're making a mistake."

"Then it's my mistake to make."

They left slowly. Reluctantly. Daniel shot me one last look—something between pity and contempt—before he closed the door behind them.

I stood alone in the center of the room, my hands shaking, my chest tight.

Then I grabbed my worn field journal from the desk, shoved it into my jacket pocket, and walked out into the rain.

The pack house courtyard was nearly empty. Most wolves had gone inside to escape the storm. The few who remained stood under the covered walkways, talking in low voices, their eyes tracking me as I walked toward the center of the courtyard.

Toward Nolan.

He stood near the main steps, his back to me, talking to Marcus. His shoulders were tense. His hands were shoved in his pockets. He looked tired.

Good.

I stopped a few feet behind him. "Nolan."

He turned slowly. His silver eyes met mine, and for just a second—one brief, flickering second—I saw something that might have been regret.

Then it was gone.

"Clara." His voice was flat. "You shouldn't be here."

"I know." I stepped closer. Rain soaked through my jacket, plastered my hair to my face. I didn't care. "I need to say something."

Marcus shifted uncomfortably. "Alpha, maybe—"

"Stay," Nolan said. His eyes didn't leave mine. "She won't take long."

I looked at him. At the man I had loved. The man I had trusted. The man who had marked me in private and destroyed me in public.

"I, Clara Davis, healer of the Shadowridge Pack," I said clearly, my voice carrying across the courtyard, "reject you, Nolan Willis, Alpha of the Shadowridge Pack, as my mate."

The bond snapped.

It felt like my spine fracturing. Like every nerve in my body catching fire at once. I heard myself scream—a sound I didn't recognize—and then I was on my knees in the mud, gasping, my hands clawing at my chest.

Nolan collapsed beside me. His wolf released a sound that shook the walls of the pack house—a howl of agony that made every wolf in hearing distance freeze.

But I felt it. The moment the bond severed completely. The warmth that had lived under my skin for three years—the constant, aching pull toward him—went cold.

And then it was gone.

I pushed myself to my feet. My legs shook. My vision blurred. But I stood.

Nolan was still on his knees, his hands pressed to his chest, his face twisted in pain. He looked up at me, his eyes wide and desperate.

"Clara—" His voice broke. "Wait—"

I turned my back on him.

And I walked into the rain.
