At 9:47, six packs howl to a voice that isn't mine. My mate helped my sister Annalise steal my gift, and wolfsbane chains my wolf. This werewolf romance tests forbidden loyalty—and when the cuffs come off, they'll learn whose voice truly keeps them alive.

After My Mate Helped My Sister Steal My Gift Summary

At 9:47, the stone floor trembles as six packs stomp for a howl rising from my throat—not Annalise's. Leather cuffs bite my wrists, and wolfsbane smoke sears my lungs, chaining my wolf beneath my skin while she wears my song like a crown above the altar. My own mate helped my sister steal my gift. I could let the healing die by stopping mid-note. Instead, I hold the note and plan. When the cuffs come off, every pack will learn whose voice truly keeps them alive.

Chapter 1 of After My Mate Helped My Sister Steal My Gift

The stone floor above me shook at exactly 9:47, the way it always did—six allied packs stamping their feet in reverence for a howl that was leaving my throat, not hers.

My wrists were raw. The leather cuffs had been pulled tight before the ceremony began, and I could feel the skin split every time I dragged in another breath. The wolfsbane smoke drifted through the vent above the altar; it always did, low enough to keep my wolf too sick to surface, strong enough to burn a slow trail down the back of my throat. I coughed once. Swallowed it. Kept singing.

My healing howl rose through the sealed chamber and into the torchlight above me, where I knew—without ever having seen it—Annalise stood with her mouth open in the shape of my notes, her chin lifted, her amber-gold hair catching the fire. The Alphas would be leaning forward. Someone would whisper *generational.* Someone always did.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my opposite wrist. Three beats. Four. The old rhythm. *You are still here. You are still here.*

When the last note left me, the roar above the stone was so loud I felt it in my molars.

Then the applause. Then the boots.

I counted them, the way I always did. Two sets—my father's Deltas, coming to unlock the cuffs and walk me back to the servant quarters before the guests dispersed. I let my head fall forward against my collarbone and waited.

Only one set of boots came down.

The iron door groaned open, and I lifted my chin because I had learned very young that keeping it lowered invited hands I did not want on my face.

He was not a Delta.

He was tall, broad through the shoulders, wearing a dark grey coat that did not belong in a basement. Hazel eyes. A jaw I recognized from the introduction photos my mother had shown Annalise three nights ago, the pack seal of Ironveil embroidered at his collar.

Alpha Judson Hale.

And then the scent hit me.

It was not a smell. It was a collision. Warm cedar—thick, resinous, alive—layered over something golden and slow that my body understood before my mind could name it. Wild honey. My knees buckled before I could brace them; the cuffs caught me and my shoulders wrenched, but the pain barely registered because somewhere deep inside my chest, in the hollow place where my wolf was supposed to live, something *stirred.*

A voice. Faint. Half-drowned. Female. It was the first sound she had ever made.

*Mate.*

I made a noise I did not recognize.

Judson crossed the chamber in three strides and knelt in front of me, his hands hovering—not touching—as if he understood that I had not been touched gently in a very long time and did not want to be the one who guessed wrong.

"I felt you," he said. His voice was low, unhurried, laced with something I read as awe. "The moment I crossed your father's border. I couldn't understand where the scent was coming from. And then I heard your howl."

He reached up—slow, watching my face—and unbuckled the cuff at my right wrist. Then the left. My hands fell into my lap, useless and shaking.

"The Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes, Aria." He knew my name. No one used my name here. "You are not staying in this room. Not another season. I don't care what your father promised Annalise. I don't care what Ironveil expects of me. I'll take you to New York. I have a house there. You'll never sing in the dark again."

I did not cry. I had forgotten how, mostly. But something inside my ribs cracked open the way ice cracks over deep water, and for the first time in my nineteen years, I let myself believe that someone had come.

---

He came back.

That was the part I could not stop turning over in the weeks that followed. He kept coming back. Before every ceremony he descended the stairs alone, bringing me a blank leather journal one week, a pen the next, a hand-carved bone token strung on a leather cord that he pressed into my palm and closed my fingers around. "For the bond," he said. "Until I can give you something better."

He asked me to hum for him. Not for the pack. Just for him, in the dark, with his forehead resting against the bars.

I composed *Broken Butterfly* in that chamber, in the hours between his visits. Every note of it was for him. I sang it to him first, sitting cross-legged on the cold stone with the journal open on my knee, and he closed his eyes and did not speak until I was finished.

"Again," he said quietly. "From the third measure. Hold that note longer this time."

I held it longer.

I did not see him write anything down. I did not think to look for a pen in his hand.

I only heard him breathe, slow and even, the way a man breathes when he is measuring something.
