Chapter 1 of After My Mate Destroyed Our Bond for Her

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I know because I was watching the ceremonial clock when Hudson dropped my hand.

I'd been standing at the fire for three years. Tonight was supposed to be the night it finally meant something. The white dress they'd given me was heavy with lace and expectation. Three hundred wolves packed the clearing, their eyes on us, on me, waiting for the Alpha to finally mark his mate. My wolf was straining so hard toward the surface I could feel her claws scraping the inside of my ribs.

Hudson's hand was warm in mine. His voice carried across the fire as he began the vow. "I, Hudson Cole, Alpha of Shadowmere—"

A scream split the night.

His fingers went slack. I felt the exact moment his attention left me—not gradually, not with hesitation, but like a door slamming shut. He turned toward the tree line where Braelyn had collapsed, clutching her chest, her face twisted in what I'd learned to recognize as her particular brand of emergency.

He ran.

I stood there with my hand still extended, the vow half-finished in the air between us, while three hundred wolves watched in perfect silence. The fire crackled. Someone coughed. My wolf stopped straining and went very, very still.

I lowered my hand.

Hudson was kneeling beside Braelyn now, his jacket already off and draped over her shoulders. She was saying something I couldn't hear, her fingers twisted in his shirt. The pack healer hurried over. I watched Hudson's face—concern, focus, the particular intensity he always had when Braelyn needed him.

I pressed my fingers to the mark on my neck. It was still there. Still warm. Still mine.

For now.

I don't know how long I stood there. Long enough for the fire to burn lower. Long enough for the whispers to start rippling through the crowd. Long enough for Hudson's mother to lean toward the woman beside her and say something that made them both look at me with identical expressions of pity.

Then Hudson was walking back.

Not hurrying. Not apologetic. Just walking, his hands in his pockets, his face composed. He stopped in front of me and I waited for the apology, the explanation, the resumption of the vow.

He took a breath.

"I, Hudson Cole, Alpha of Shadowmere, reject you, Eloise Whitmore, as my mate."

The words hit like a physical blow. My wolf screamed—a sound only I could hear—and then went silent in a way that was worse than any noise. The mark on my neck turned ice-cold. Then it turned empty.

My knees hit the ground.

The bond-severance felt like someone had reached into my chest and ripped out something that had roots. The pain was everywhere and nowhere, biological and soul-deep, a kind of agony I didn't have words for because I'd never imagined I'd need them. My vision whited out at the edges. I couldn't breathe.

Three hundred wolves watched.

No one moved.

I pressed my palm flat against the dirt and forced myself up. My legs shook. My wolf was gone—not dead, but so far away I couldn't feel her anymore, like she'd retreated into some locked room inside me and wouldn't come out.

I looked at Hudson.

He was watching me with something that might have been regret or might have been relief. I couldn't tell anymore. Behind him, Braelyn was standing now, perfectly steady, her hand on his arm.

I didn't scream. I didn't beg. I didn't ask him why.

I turned and walked out of the clearing.

The crowd parted. I heard my name once—Mavis, somewhere in the back—but I didn't stop. I walked through the pack house with my spine straight and my hands steady. I went to my workroom and looked at the shelves: three years of hand-brewed tonics, wolfsbane remedies calibrated specifically for Hudson's system, healing compounds no one else in Shadowmere knew how to make.

I lit the first journal on fire.

The flames caught fast. I watched the pages curl and blacken, every formula I'd ever written for him turning to ash. Then I smashed the vials one by one, the glass shattering against the stone floor, the liquids mixing into something useless and irreversible.

I severed the mind-links next. Every thread that connected me to Shadowmere—I found them and cut them, one by one, until the silence in my head was complete.

When I walked out of the territory, I was carrying nothing.

Two weeks later, I heard his wolf started losing its sheen.

I didn't care.

Silverpeak territory was gray and cold and far enough away that no one knew my name. The pack healer looked me over with the particular suspicion reserved for wolves who show up alone and said I could stay if I made myself useful. There was a cabin at the outskirts. I could have it in exchange for tonic work.

I took it.

The cabin was small and drafty and mine. I didn't go to pack functions. I didn't introduce myself. I existed in the margins, which was exactly where I wanted to be.

Then I found Barnaby.

He was cowering in the woods at the edge of the territory, an omega wolf-dog with matted fur and eyes that flinched away from everything. Someone had hurt him. I could see it in the way he held himself, the way he pressed his body low to the ground when I approached.

I knelt slowly. Didn't reach out. Just stayed there until he stopped shaking.

"It's okay," I said quietly. "You don't have to trust me yet."

He didn't.

But he followed me back to the cabin anyway, keeping ten feet of distance between us the entire way. I left food outside the door. He ate it after I went inside.

It took three days before he'd let me sit in the same room.

I didn't name what I recognized in him. I didn't have to. We both knew what it looked like when the world taught you that hope was expensive and hands were dangerous.

I just kept showing up. Same voice. Same movements. Same slow, deliberate patience.

Eventually, he stopped flinching.

My wolf stayed silent.
